The 4.0 is a very good engine. It is a direct decendant of the Nash I6 that dates back to about 1948 or so. In 1964 (1965?) it was seriously upgraded to the standard that lasted until about 1984 or so. It was used in the Concorde and Eagles at that stage. This was the 258 (4.2L) and 232 (3.8L) versions

AMC was bought by Chysler, and admittedly, buying a GM engine, the 2.8 V6 (a piece of shit, too), made little sense.

So Mopar revamped that old 6... It was resized (destroked, IIRC) to 4.0L, with EFI and a really slick header. This means the engine went from 100hp to 190hp. The MPG didn't change, which was a huge step forward, and emissions dropped.

In many ways, the 4.0L is the last of the great American Inline 6s. It was also the best all around I6.
