The reality is this... age of the car is now conspiring against you. The audio system is one of the first major components to take a shit.

Cars are a harsh environment. Temperature, humidity, vibration... it all adds up to a short lifespan. Speakers dry rot, CD drives atrophy, amps wear out.

And Bose, in general, is not immune... in fact, their long term durability flat out sucks, even for home audio.

Save your pennies, you have time, because, as I said, most of these units are not available.

I have much of the hardware needed to upgrade my OEM system (Delco, not Bose). But haven't gotten to it... a blown up knee has killed me.

However, good aftermarket stuff will fit in the car with minimal mods, but will sound exponentially better than the Bose.

I have to admit, I have rather expensive tastes in audio. I have been doing audio for 45 years and have learned a few things:

1. The best is normally worth it. It lasts longer and sounds better

2. The best is not automatically the most expensive

Much depends on your taste in music, but the truth is, the internal amp of a head unit is not enough.

First off, I would gut the entire Bose system. As I said, it ain't getting younger.

For the front speakers, I got Morel 3-way components. You may not want that, so a nice 2-way system could fit just as well. These are the ones I got:

There is a little speaker in the B-pillar. If you want to use that, it can be powered by the head unit, no problem. It's just adding ambience anyway... but you will need an amp for the front stage, I like these:

If you decide to go 4 channel, 2 of those, or, 1 four channel:

But there are others that should do well without breaking the bank... just avoid the junk brands. Morel, Focal, Hertz, MB Quart, JL Audio, Alpine and Kenwood are the best brands.

For the bass, the Bose equalization was junk anyway, so a nice sub would be a huge benefit. I would look at one of the smaller sub boxes with a built in amp. Something like this would do the trick:

I like JL Audio subs, hate their amps. They sound ok, just not very durable.

A few brands to avoid... MTX, Rockford-Fosgate (they were world class, but are now living off a past greatness), Boss, Dual, Jensen, Soundstream (again, past greatness), Sony (sounds great, not super durable), Pioneer (sounds muddy, never have liked their sound quality). Stay clear of the cheap crap... The $125 head units are not where you want to be.

All of this is a suggestion and a reference point. Not a hard fast rule.

As I said, I have been doing audio since I was a kid. I didn't understand it then, but it became obvious that I had a unique situation... I could hear things no one else could. I would walk into the department store electronics dept and hear all these high-pitched squeals... at times, it was painful, but I found out later it was either failing horizontal output transistors, or, weak power supplies.

As I got older, I learned that cheap audio gave me a headache. Cheap audio gets harsh, due to the junk components in the amps. This is why I spend money... I don't buy much, but when I do, it's the best I can afford.

Don't confuse Taiwan with China. Their build quality is leaps and bounds above China.

The first pic, the black C2 and C3... there is no way in hell that's original paint... none. The factory acetates from that era looks like crap when new, and didn't age worth a crap. They look WAY too lovely!!!

The old Malibu has aged much better than I ever expected. They look modern today. I am a fan of the Grand Prix and the Cutlass! I would LOVE to find one of the super rare GPs, with a 455 and 4spd. They made a few, I don't remember how few... saw a 1976 Buick Regal in SCM a couple of years back, it was all white, but had a 260ci V8 and a 5spd manual. It was being billed as a fuel economy special. I kinda see it as a potentially great highway car.

The launch edition is a fave, I loved that Bowling Green Metallic, and I saw a couple at Long Beach, it's aging well. Very well. Great colour on the C7.

Busy weekend! Did our taxes... not to bad!

Did some work work... migrating a database... I think the worst is done. Not to shabby.

The C8.R was FAST. I mean FAST. All weekend they were flat hooked up!

A rare and unusual pit stop mistake - a lug nut went sub-orbital when they left the pit box... said lug nut then bashed the radiator of the car behind, damaging it. Luckily, no one was hurt, but the Vette did have to serve a drive thru penalty.

The upside? No chance of a BoP change before Monterey next month!

The weather on race day was lovely, mid-70s... on Friday? Convection oven! It was nearly 100F!!!! The tent was ok, but stiflingly hot. No breeze, but at least shade.

My knee did limit my roaming. The grassy areas are very uneven, so I just hung out in the corral.

The corral was very nicely attended. It was a full house, about 90 Vettes, I would guess. maybe 100. I didn't count the parking spaces. The corral is located in the marina, behind the start finish line. In short, the BEST parking in the entire track space. Period. End of discussion.

A few random thoughts....

* Hotels are never a problem in LA... just don't expect a deal in Long Beach. There are nearby towns that simply won't be aware there is a race. Amazing, but true.

* Weather is typically lovely, but we are expecting a heatwave... and that will suck. Friday? 90! Saturday? 75! Tuesday? 65 and rain. Welcome to SoCal.

* Traffic sucks, so if you do plan to come, make sure you have ample travel time

* BRING YOUR CORVETTE... and plan ahead. I got the last Corral passes, and I bought 2 months ago. However, Corral parking is the BEST. PERIOD. It is very close to the start finish line. When watching aerial shots, look for a big white tent, it's near the start finish line, behind the grandstands and just outside the track, in the marina parking lot. That tent is the corral. You might even see a bunch of Vettes parked there!

Last summer, some tweaker decided to break into our Suburban. They didn't get anything but I felt so violated. Pissed didn't cover it.

They did screw up the steering column quite nicely, tho...

I hope you get the car back!!! But in my experience (8+ years working in law enforcement), your car was targeted. Someone wanted it. Period. I am guessing its been given a "new" VIN and is long gone. I hope I am wrong, but that's a thing.

And Corvette gets hit with a BOP "adjustment"... sigh...

I assume you alerted the police? that is the best thing you can do. It won't be able to leave the country once the VIN has been recorded in the stolen vehicle database.

It was a great result for Corvette! The team ran like a Swiss watch the entire event!

A note... IMSA used to do corner flags... then swapped to full course. I asked Doug Fehan about this. He stated that the drivers were NOT honouring the corner flags, so... full course it is.

It was my work firewall... the car looks GREAT!!!!

It's Thursday here in SoCal! And it's cloudy and cooler. It had been up into the 70s the last few days, but we have dipped back into the 60s. There is even a threat of rain... and in SoCal, that translates into chaos.

Work is throwing challenges... but nothing a little time and patience can't fix.

Geez, dude, 928's are actually going UP... and fast. the days of a nice one for $15k are done. I think people are finally realizing that a Porsche sports car does not need to be rear engined.

As for the 80s cars... it's an age thing. All the kids of the 80s can now afford their dream cars! It's why muscle cars have taken a dump, those who grew up with them are now aging out and selling. This is the time to buy and hold, then sell in about 3-5 years... maybe a little more.

yea, I know... there have been some good operations, but in general, C4 owners were too broke to spend real money.

Especially after the C5 came out!

Just hang'n out at work. Had some data issues (external to me), that caused major headaches. They appear to be resolved.

Sad, they had neat stuff. I hope someone buys out their intellectual property, because I sense the C4 has a chance of becoming a platform for future hot rodding... maybe.

It's sunny here in SoCal... that's a thing of note, after the rainy as hell holiday season we had!

And I am not complaining! The rain was a God Send. We needed it bad and it has really broken the back of the drought.

I do not expect much rain over the next 60 days. Mostly because the a la nina event in the Equatorial Pacific. Water temps change, we get dry. Once that weakens, come March or so, I expect the rains to come back. If that works out, we might even wipe out the rest of the drought! ya!

Otherwise, all is good here!

And one real important thing... The site is staying up. I have no intentions of bringing it down, I just need to do some upgrades and fix the URL issues once and for all!!
