It friggin cold, same as you. Here's a little karmic justice...

Last week all the guys in my work group went to California for a training deal. I get to go to Iowa tomorrow, because it's closer... Well My boss has to make a special trip in tomorrow to see a customer and it's gonna be -38 with the wind chill. That'll teach him to send everybody else to California. I emailed and told him to bring a light coat as the weather will be mild and sunny.

By the way, what's CFOT?

I used to call 'em Barbie Corvettes because I had no knowledge, and therefore no respect. Once I took the time to learn about the history of the C4s and how good a car they are, that's what I chose to buy. I even had to eat a bunch of humble pie from my wife and kids, cause I said I would never owna Barbie Corvette. Open mouth, insert foot....

I recently removed both visors from my 93. Sounds like they are in the same condition as yours, sans the cat. I took one apart carefully so as to save the guts to use as a pattern. I raided my wifes craft supplies and found something she called "bristle board" to use as the structure for the new visors. The mirrors and lights were both complete and functional so I was able to just trace the outline of the old visor onto a couple peices of this bristle board, cut out my new visors and move on to covering them. First I marked the new patterns where they need to fold and set up a simple straight edge and clamps in the shop to bend them into submission (so they fit over the old wooden form inside the visors). Then it's just a matter of covering the new visor "shell" with someting appropriate. Again I raided the craft supply corner and grabbed some marine vinyl that looks very similar to the black leather in the car. I chose marine vinyl because it has resistance to UV rays. The next step is to glue the vinyl into place and re-assemble the visors. I could send some pictures later this week if anyone is interested. (Travelling for biz this week). This is a good winter project. New visors will cost you a couple c's at least. My wife says the vinyl I grabbed is worth about $5 and the bristle board maybe $10...so $15 and couple hours of effort vs. $200 plus? That's a no brainer.

I sent you a PM earlier. The dealer recommended to me was Premium Tire, 33 Top Flight Drive, Mississauga, 905-795-9200. Contact there is Blair Caskie. He doesn't know me...this was a referal from a friend in Mississauga.

Good luck!

The "99Y" together comprise the tires' service description. As you pointed out, the Y denotes a speed capability of 186 mph or 300 kmph and the 99 denotes a load carrying capacity of 1709 Lbs for each tire at maximum inflation, typically about 40 psi on this type of performance tire.

I do custom carpentry (furntiture) and produce a heavy truck alignment kit. The proceeds from these activities fund my Vette dreams.

Try Coker Tire for that. http://www.cokertire.com/

Their business is all about hard to find rubber.

When it comes to upsizing tires, the basic rule of thumb is to stay with 5% +/- of your OE outside diameter (od). Your OE tires had an OD of 25.66". As long as the bolt pattern and wheel offset match your car, you could look at a size like 255/40R18 for the front and up to a 315/30R18 rear. The size will be determined by the brand and tread you choose. The really important thing to know is with tires, you get what you pay for. I think the best value for your dollar right now is the FST WideOval. If you go with 18 " on your car, you can get 245/40R18 fr and 295/35R18 rr. Another very important issue with a change like this is to make sure your suspension is up to snuff. If you change to a much lower profile tire, you put extra load or stress on your suspension components. Do the basics - check your shocks, bushings, ball joints, tie rods etc. If any of these are at all suspect, now is the time to fix them. I am doing the same this spring with my 93. New shocks all round, replace the sway bar bushings with urethane, a couple ball joints and then new tires and at the end, an alignment. Let me know where in Ontario you are and I might be able to hook you up with a trustworthy tire dealer.

The Big Guru in the sky has a way of evening things out. Our economy is pretty stable but holy crap it's been cold here in Winnipeg... minus 38C this morning without windchill! I too lost a dog just weeks ago. He was 14 years old and had been with my wife and I since shortly after we married. It was like loosing a kid, and Yeah, I cried too.

Stay warm all.

My wife used to work at a Home Depot as the Paint dept manager. She got the most unbeleivably stupid questions and problems, but the best was when some idiot bought 4 gallons of high end paint, 4 gallons of primer, brushes, tarps etc. Needless to say, this was his first go at painting. She explained the process to this genius and sent him on his way. Three hours later he comes back with 3 gallons of paint, 3 gallons of primer and wants a refund for his whole purchase. After calming the wingnut down, my wife was able to find out why he was so unhappy. It turns out in his haste to be finished, he figured he could save a step by combing the paint and primer and apply them in a single step. Apparently it was like ..."trying to paint with cottage cheese"... What does Bill Ingvold say? ...Here's your sign!

There are some really challenged people walking around.

It's true of lots of things these days - you only get what you pay for. When it comes to tires, this is especially true. If you are buying tires for a home-to-work econo commuter, save a few dollars on the junk from Walmart. When it comes to high performance tires on a serious performance car, stick with a brand name you know. Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone and Firestone all make tires that will fit our cars. I have Sumitomo's (garbage) on my 93 but will be replacing them before I do any touring next spring. I will be installing a set of Firestone Wide Ovals. I asked a friend who works for FST if there are any new sizes coming out for this tread, like a 315/35ZR17, but unfotunately not yet.

After further careful inspection, it appears that what little is leaking is coming from the cover. I would suspect that it is just the oring on the cover that is leaking. There are no oil leaks at all on my engine (thanks to the Great Guru above) so I may have dodged your $5000 bullet. If I spent that much on this car right now, my lovey wife would shoot me, maybe twice.

Thanks for your help.

I noticed some very minor seepage on the front of my water pump today. Actually, a few drops of fluid on the pulley below the pump. (93 LT1 coupe). Is this an indication of a leaky pump or just a seal to be replaced. My car has been sitting in the garage for a about 6 weeks, ever since the snow started to fall *&*^%$#!!!!

Anybody have any gems of wisdom on this?

Thanks
Jim

When you buy your tires, just make sure that the overall diamtere for both front and rear is within 5% +/- of 25.7 inches (OE size). You could stick with the stock 275/40ZR17 on the front and go 315/35ZR18 on the rear. OD's will match and look slick.
