Learned something today I had a code 34 on my 1984 Corvette. The Chiltons said it was either a MAF or a MAP sensor. According to some other literature I found it was a MAF sensor so I started looking for it. Turns out my Corvette (is this true with all 1984's?) does not have a MAF sensor. Sooo I looked at the MAP sensor and found it unplugged.(?) Not sure how that happened but anyhow problem solved no more check engine light. If only everything was this easy......... Another clue for me early on was the fact that I couldn't find a MAF for this year Corvette at any of the parts houses.

Did you clear the Auto Lock out security feature by unlocking the door with your key? I know this is "out there" but this happened to me when I first owned my Vette. Good luck.

Not sure this is working right with the picture. I need to find a Crankcase Ventilation Filter Housing (the rubber piece) for my 84. Chevy dealer says obsolete, local oldies parts store says impossible to find. It has an A/C Delco part number of FB 93. Any help is appreciated.

I can't seem to find a MAF sensor for a 1984 Vette. All the places I go to have it for a 1985 and newer. Any ideas? Thanks in advance/

Thanks for this post. It cleared up a mystery for me. My Chiltons said the code was either a MAF or a MAP.

Congrats on your Vette. I just bought my 84 (my first Vette) in August and absolutely love it. This site has been a huge help.

Thanks to "tjpreul" for your input on Antennas.

An engine rebuild by a machine shop. Quote started out at $2000.00 then when I went to pick it up it was $3200.00. It needed a new this and a new that....... Thing that really pissed me off was the exhaust "tick" was still there after the build.

Thanks. I twisted and pulled the fog light connections out and there are no bulbs (a definite Eureka moment). The end looks like a wire connection instead of a bulb socket?

I found the parking light bulbs (amber ones) and they look easy enough. But when I pulled the driving lights plugs out there wasn't a bulb on the end for either side.?

This is going to show my new-be-ness to the nth degree but I have to ask (there are not stoopid questions.......) On the dash just to the right of the head light switch there is a switch that doesn't do anything. My thoughts were that this is for the Driving lights. If it is and its just a matter of changing out bulbs how do I get to them? No screws on the outside and no access on the inside. Thanks.

Nice offer! Thanks but I have those as well. I just treated my K&N and the rough idle seemed to be a bit smoother. Going to give it a couple of months and go to paper. My guess is there isn't going to be a noticeable difference.

Thanks for your inputs! NGK and Taylor it is. I've changed plugs on lots of Chevy's over the years but this is my first Vette. Should be fun...... Thanks again.

Decided to use the existing K&N so I cleaned and treated the K&N with the K&N cleaner and treatment stuff. Still have the puff of smoke on start up and the idle seems a bit better but not smooth yet.

Sparks plugs are next (see new thread) then maybe a distributor check up.

Once I get going the engine runs fantastic.

Whats the best spark plugs to use for 84 C4 5.7 crossfire fuel injected? Also, if you've changed these before please list tricks/hints/tips.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks to all for your inputs. I'm going to try the paper filter for awhile then shift back to the K&N just to see the difference. Currently I'm having idle and surge problems (albeit minor). Will let you all know the outcome.

Thanks. Another pleasant discovery is the MPG's I get with this car. I'm used to my truck that gets around 14-15 mpg's on a good day. This car is getting over 20.

Hope to get into the dash next week. I'll let you know if I find any hard to get to or hidden screws. I know I need to be extra careful and go slow because of the brittleness.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Some interesting news. I was driving up to Ventura last week and noticed a little shimy in the front end. I took it to a tire shop and had the two front tires computer balanced. Well this is one of those rare moments when you get more (in a positive) than you pay for. Not only did the shimy go away but my instrument panel came online and worked great. No blinking or fade. This tells me I probably just have a short in the wiring and instead of having to rebuild the I/P I just need to clean connectors and insulate the areas where the wires are close to metal. Love this car.

That was the cost of having a machine shop rebuild the engine, new radiator and such plus labor. I thought it was a bit pricey but after 50k miles this new engines still sounds great.

Would like everybody's take on K&N Filters. I had one in my 1997 GMC Sierra and it didn't turn out so well. The treatment fluid got on the map sensor and turned my engine into an effective anchor. $3200 mistake. I was told this couldn't happen but I lived it and saw it happen. Overtreatment? Possibly although I followed the directions pretty closely.

Thanks in advance. With all that said "Whats your take"?

Yea, I checked out the other wire and it is solid. These are definitely two separate problems. In fact I cut the other wire off so they would be be the same length and plug in evenly. I used wire splice couplings. Once I get everything working then I'm going to go back on put some shrink wrap as well.

While I was down changing oil I got a look at my oil pan for the first time. Ouch. Not leaking for now.....

My first action for the Instrument Panel is going to be to clean everything up and plug/unplug the main wiring harness.
If that doesn't work then I'm going to the Batee.com sight get the instructions.

Mine keeps fading in and out, acting like a short. After reading a couple of entry's in this forum I went to a sight (www.Batee.com)a couple of guys here recommended and found EXACTLY what we need to trouble shoot the Instrument Panels. This guy breaks down step by step how to do it. Pictures are included. Incredible. Well worth the "donation" he asks for.

Much to my surprise they are BOTH working now. So my lesson learned here is that when the Variable Speed Sensor goes out it takes out both the Speedo and the Odometer, gives you a "24" code and the check engine light comes on because of the code.

Just hope the Instrument Panel is as easy a fix as this was...... Too cool.

Great news. I looked under the car in the hopes of getting a look at the VSS and found one of the wires pulled out. Spliced it back in and now the speedo is working. Now onto pulling that dash for a look into the I/P.

Thanks to all for the pictures and Tech talk. You guys made it easy.

Wow. Talk about good fortune. Like APdale I just got my first Corvette, I bought it in August and the Tach and the Speedo is not working and its the same color (Torch Red). The Code displays a "24" which I believe is the VSS. I was going to just jump in and replace the VSS but after reading the posts I'm having second thoughts. I did notice on its maiden voyage home that the IP faded out so I rapped it with my knuckle and it all came back on. Almost sounds like two problems here. Where should I start with my troubleshooting?
Thanks in advance!
Love this car......
