Its currently in the hands of the pinstriper. I'll take some more pics when I get it back and apply the final clear.

One of the things you see is "print thru" even when using something like the 3M fine line plastic tape (the blue stuff0, you pull it and can see where the tape was. It will show up when cleared. That's why I was asking about the adhesive.
It's also why the 3M mask is nice, it comes off very easy and you can cut it while it's on the car.

Anyway, nice job on tour hood.
You can see my last custom paint job in our "roadracing" section under "Fast Karts", the one that's white & orange. It was all done with the fineline masking tape by hand.

It's not going to be perfect, but I'm no painter so I consider it an accomplishment. I learned a lot in the process, so it has been a success.

Really nice job on the kart! Cool fade job.

Regarding the "print thru", I know exactly what you're talking about, as I've had that happen on other non-auto projects. I didn't notice any of that where the vinyl was, but the paint wasn't exactly glass-smooth either , so maybe it was there and I just didn't notice. I can say I didn't see anything like that after I applied the clear. And for the few areas where I needed regular tape, I used the green stuff and it left no traces.

Trae, the vinyl you used, was it the standard stuff they use for lettering? I've heard there is low adhesive vinyl available.

Most guys (like Foose) use 3M mask on a roll cut on a computer. It's certainly less expensive than vinyl but you have to have a source to cut it. I've been wanting to ask Andy if his vinyl machine would cut it.

It was the standard stuff - the guy I used apparently didn't have anything specifically for masking.

For the most part, it worked well. However, the part masking the white was on for a few days and was really starting to stick. When we removed it, some of the adhesive stayed on the hood. We dabbed it with some turpentine to soften it, then it wiped right off. Not really a problem, but it was an annoyance.

Everywhere else, the standard vinyl worked perfectly, maybe because it was only on long enough for the paint to tack up. But I can definitely see the benefit of a low adhesive. If I take on another project like this, I may seek out a local source. Thanks for the info.

A source for decals or a source for masks?

I'm assuming this is the flag you're looking for:
Resized Image
Unfortunately, I don't know any suppliers of full-color decals that size. I'm sure someone could do it, but it might be cost-prohibitive.

You could do it with colored vinyl if you applied it in layers - silver, then red, black, and white on top of that. I briefly considered that very thing for mine, but I was leery of the vinyl on the underside of the hood. Was afraid I would open the hood one day to find it had fallen off, and become a big molten blob on my headers.

Mine is all paint, so all I needed was custom masks - colors were irrelevant. I created all of the artwork myself, and got a local sign shop to cut the vinyl. Still relatively costly, but I couldn't have masked that without them.

After primer, my steps were pretty straight forward:

1. Painted entire center area white (inside the "structure").
2. Laid down the "positive" mask - which covered everything that isn't red.
3. Painted the entire underside red.
4. Removed the letters from the positive mask (I had those cut into it, but left them attached until this step).
5. Painted the letters black (after masking everything I didn't want overspray on).
6. Re-masked the letters with regular automotive masking tape.
7. Laid down the "negative" mask, offset from the positive, to create the shadow areas.
8. Painted the "open" areas with darkened red.
9. Removed all masks.
10. Touched up areas as needed and applied clear to all.

I thought about incorporating a cross flag logo as well. But since this is my first attempt at this kind of job, I decided that would be a little too complex to try to paint. I'm pretty happy with what I've done so far.

Any other details you need?

It really wasn't all that bad. The worst part for me was removing the black I had applied a few years ago. The insulation clips popped off, glue and all, with a little effort. And underneath the finish, it was pretty smooth - I only had to fill a few very small areas.

I know you've all been on pins and needles waiting on an update.

Here's where I'm at currently. Next step will be to have a pinstriper do a black outline around the white, and a red outline around the lettering. Then on to the clear.

Yeh, mine has plenty of rotation. Where I have it set now, I see just a little of the fender, and I could turn it in more if I wanted.

IÂ’m no electrical expert, so maybe one of you can help.

Last year I replaced my taillight and backup light bulbs with LED replacements, like those that SuperBrightLEDs offers. They work flawlessly and look great behind new lenses. :thumbleft:

So then I wanted to replace my front turn signal bulbs, and that’s when the issue started. At first, they would not work – all would light up as if there was one missing, and no signal function. I assumed this was an issue with low resistance, so I replaced the standard flasher with a Tridon Electro-Mechanical unit. After that, they functioned properly, until…

I turned on the headlights, and they all lit up again with no signal function. So I then tried a different flasher I had read good things about – a Signal-Stat #262 Heavy Duty Electronic. But I’m still lit up with no function ... only with the headlights on.

Any ideas why?

I know about the load resistors I can install, but I want to make sure thatÂ’s what I need before I go splicing wires.

Your input is much appreciated.

I would prefer no luggage rack, but I really don't have a strong opinion either way. Mine already had one, so I left it ... I even use it occasionally. Will replace it with stainless one day.

That's really nice.

Unfortunately, I don't think it would look right surrounded by my luggage rack.

I actually just replaced my stock lid with a smooth one (no emblem). Never did care for the starburst emblem, and mine showed 30+ years of wear.

By the way, are you going to change hoods? I also looked at that intake, but all of my measurements added up to interference with the stock hood, so I decided against it.
