Outsourcing's No Fly Zone
Boeing recently took financial charges linked to major delays with the 787 Dreamliner and the 747-8 cargo plane. Much of the blame for the 787's troubles, argues an EDN article, can be traced to over-reliance on outsourcing component and system designs to hundreds of suppliers all around the globe. Troubles mounted when Boeing had to integrate all those designs seamlessly into a world-class airplane. For example, certain design modules, though tested through computer simulation, didn't undergo sufficient real-world tests. At your company, how do you ensure that outsourced designs meet expectations without costly delays and rework?
