I came across a neat little trick that really worked for my PC. I can't claim it will work for everybody. So maybe we can all (those that tinker) give this a try and compare results.

The MS system uses a "pagefile" that buffers memory to the hard drive. (OK there's more to it but now's not the time) This file normally resides on the "C" drive and shares resources with the OS. I moved the pagefile to its own partition on the primary drive. Basically put, a 1GB partition was created at the end of drive0. Lets call this the "P" drive. Then the pagefile was removed from the C and recreated on the P. Restart required. Since the change, there really "seems" to be an increase in overall performance.

If you already know what I'm talking about, I'd encourage you to give it a try.

An extension of this idea... and yes, this works, but - take it off the hd completely!

Use a big (8gb) jump drive. A real shot of speed.

I'm sorry the partition is 10GB not 1GB. damn decimals....

Need a good utility to measure this effort.
Whatcha got in your bag of tricks Andy?

what I said above.Putting it on a jump drive means it's running at solid state speed, even USB 2.0... and also means that the drive doesn't have to go looking for it.

Another trick, for SQL server, is to put both the tempdb and the db log files onto a separate disk. Same effect, no head action required to move about the same disk.

Sounds like a good idea.
Yet how does one configure a removable drive to be recognized for pagefile status?
I have a 3.0 8G jump being used as a MS speedbooster and a partitioned pagefile.

let the OS do it... Windows will self manage the jump drive.

I believe your referring to the "speedbooster" option when plugging in a flash/thumb drive? W7 will not authorize a temp drive for pagefile duties.

Anyways going back to my OP. I would like to see if any otehr gurus are curious to try this mod.

I wonder if it would allow the files to be allocated on a second hard drive?

Yes. As long as the drive is listed as an internal basic/primary drive 0,1,2 etc.

that would be optimal... two drives running in parallel.

I am a huge fan of SS hard disk... they are FAST... Bastet44's got a 512m primary SSDD and that machine will boot in no time flat. (Win7/iCore 7/16m RAM)
