they can get slow... they can get wacky... they can act weird... all of witch may or may not throw a code. failure would result in a code.

however, check the relays and the wiring to and from the relays, first.

on the pre 1991 C4s, that's a real problem - overall harness durability.

Previous owners allowing dubious work to be carried out hasnt helped my wiring, just today i fixed the right knock sensor wire cause it was all frayed from touching the long tube headers before i got the car...

that's a different problem, casey!

I had a guy with a 92 vert, and someone ran his two temp sensors to the same source!!! This was their quick fix for a bad wire to the head sensor... unbelieveable.

the pre-1991 vettes have wiring made up of different materials. The insulation is no where NEAR as resistant to heat and chemicals as the later wiring. Somewhere around 1990, the SAE decided to change the composition of the wiring... that made a huge difference in the durability of engine harnesses.

I suggest that people check the relay connectors and anything related to the harness whenever there is a wacky problem like this.

I agree - what I really to do is go over all my wiring with a fine tooth comb. Problem is that I have to do this soon before the weather gets colder and the engine starts behaving again ...

hm... I would take advantage of time.

To me, a failure that is heat related means something is soon to die. I would start checking the wiring very closely.

I hear you - I think the first thing I'm going to do is disconnect the battery and start checking wiring and cleaning connectors. Ah, the glamour of C4 ownership ...

For what it is worth, this is my experience with the MAF. I have an 87 vert. that I installed a Jasper 383 stroker. Ran fine after a few bug killings. Then all of a sudden the engine ran bad (no code) and poured black smoke from the exhaust. Long story short, the MAF malfunctioned. Found it by unplugging sensor. Ordered a new one, installed and been running fine ever since. This was 6 months ago. I have scratched and sniffed to figure out why it did not set a code. Even discussed with my mech. which is very reliable. Hope this info helps.
