This is more of an update on my previous dilemma rather than a new problem. Bought the car about 2 months ago. 78K miles, bronze colored, cloth seats. Pretty mint condition.

Anywho, the original problem was having a code 33 thrown. Clearing the codes, and jiggling some wires basically got rid of the code. However, when I would press the overdrive switch, the Gauges fuse would blow right away, with the resulting code being 33.

It was time to change the fluid in the OD pan, and I remember a post from another forum with the same problem I was having - fuse being blown when engaging the OD. In that thread, there was a loose wire inside of the pan, that, when being 'juiced', sent current to the pan and shorted out the circuit.

After taking the pan off, I looked for any sort of loose wire - none found. I expanded my search to wires that were basically anywhere near the pan. There is a wire leading to a connector right next to where you put the ATF fluid in the housing. Not sure what this connector is called. The wire had come in contact with the exhaust pipe (drivers side, shortly after it branches out into the Y shape. The insulation had deteriorated/melted, leaving some exposed wire, and hitting on the metal exhaust pipe. Put some electrical tape on it, and got a cable tie to tie it up so it would not come in contact with the exhaust.

On my test drive, I was quite anxious to see if my handiwork was going to pay off. After all, this was pretty much an all-day project. It took a lot of time jacking up the car, and wiggling in and out.

Well, needless to say, I was quite pleased when I pressed the OD switch and I heard and felt the engine going into OD. And, no fuse being blown, no Service Engine Soon, and, no code being thrown.

Hope this helps out anybody who is facing this problem right now, or in the future.

I have been preaching to the chior about the crappy wiring on the pre 90 C4s.

Glad you found it!!! If you can get some heat shield tubing for that harness, it would help even more.
