I have an 85 and It's been a while since I had to set the timing on an engine and I'm a little unclear. On the timing cover is the tab with a 0 marking and degree marking before and after the 0 mark. I also installed an aftermarket harmonic balance with the 0 mark and degrees marked on it also. The procedure is to disconnect a wire that prevents the computer from controlling the timing and then set the timing at 6 degrees BTDC. Do I match the 0 mark on the balancer up to 6 degrees BTDC or match 6 degrees on the timing tab or match 6 degrees on the balance up to the 0 mark on the timing tab

you would match the 0 mark on the balancer to 6* mark on the timing mark on the timing cover.

What Andy said. When you have the engine running it will be easier to understand hands on - because the balancer will be spinning and when the timing light hits it, it will illuminate the portion of the timing tab as the "0" part of the balancer goes by. The wire you are talking about is called the EST wire and should be tan in color, right next to the brake booster. I have pictures if you can't find it.

Thanks Bogus. Thanks for the offer on the picture Matatk, I know where the EST is.

That damned wire moves, too.

This is for anyone who reads this post in the future... the EST is NOMINALLY located near the brake booster. More accurately, it is anywhere between the booster and the distributor.
