Good Evening CGs!

Sorry I haven't been on in a week. I have been too motivated this week to do much other than work and some small chores around the house.

Corvette is still not back together. I did order all the parts and they came in, though.

Today is my wedding anniversary. We had a family barbecue last night to celebrate. I wanted to dinner with my wife but that didn't work out. Maybe next year.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Pushrods are all straight. Already checked with a v-block and feeler gauge.

Good Morning CGs!

Happy Sunday to everyone. Hope you've been enjoying the weekend. Happy belated birthday to Sue. Hope you guys had a nice dinner.

Update on the car status. My buddy can over Saturday morning with his borescope. Didn't see any unusual scoring or damage to the cam. I was able to get a finger on it through the lifter bores and it felt smooth. The first good news I've gotten about the car. So a set of lifters, gaskets, some assembly lubes, and an oil change and I'll be back in business (hopefully).

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Best wishes to you and the family, Gris.

Tinkered with the car a little more last night. I inspected the lifter more closely. It didn't collapse as much as it exploded. That's right. The top of the plunger actually came out of the lifter body. I found the plunger top in the lifter valley. I didn't find the oil control disc, though. That's a problem. I'm hoping it fell in the oil pan instead of getting chewed up. I have to drain the oil and pull the filter and cut that open. The cam is up in the air right now. Not sure if I need to change it. I have a buddy looking at it Saturday who knows more than me about that.

Never a dull moment, right?

Hope everyone has a great day!

Took me about 3 hours to pull off the superram today. I confirmed my diagnosis. Collapsed lifter. Looks like light scoring on the roller end as well which means the cam is also F'd. Great. Still need to pull the remaining lifters.

Joel - not sure what happened first. Chicken or the egg? I'm guessing the lifter collapsed and when the valve closed it pushed the rocker arm back and snapped the stud since it had no resistance on the top side. That's an uneducated guess.

Not sure if the lifter failed or got a loose metal particle in it. I'll have to pull it apart and inspect it.

John, congrats on the writing. Keep up the good work.

Hope everyone had a great day.

Good Evening CGs!

Started working on the Corvette today to get the new rocker studs installed. Got the head torn down and cleaned up, new studs installed. Put the pushrods back and ruh-roh. Something wasn't right. #3 pushrod was sitting too low in the head. Fuck. Lifter is collapsed. That means the while top end has to come apart. New lifters and most likely a new cam. I think the valve is still good. I'm in a pretty shitty mood. Sorry.

Hope everyone had a great day.

Good Morning CGs!

Sorry I've been missing for a couple of days again. Been busy with work, the kids, the house, everything. Haven't had a day off in almost two weeks.

I finally got a chance to work on the Corvette the other day. If you recall I was having problems with what seemed like an ignition misfire. After eliminating pretty much that entire system I came to the theory that I had a bad rocker arm or bad lifter. Thursday evening I took off the driver's side valve cover and found the picture below. I snapped off a rocker arm stud. Great. Although to be honest with you, I'm glad I found the problem and it's not as bad as I thought it could be. I don't have to tear into the engine to replace a hydraulic lifter. I have to stop by the Speed Shop this morning and see if they have rocker studs in stock.

Sounds like everyone has been keeping busy. TB, I fixed a chair myself the other day. The kids decided to stand on one of the dining room chairs and of course broke the MDF board that holds the cushion. I don't particularly care for upholstery but it needed to be fixed. That got done and luckily it turned out well.

Tommy, good luck with the hurricane. I hope it passes without any trouble.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Normally I start my chats with "good morning." But that's hard to do when I read Gris' news of the passing of his son. It is with heartfelt sincerity that I say everyone from here is mourning for you. My wife tells me that her hospice patients have last moments of clarity and they know they are surrounded by their family. Take solice in that thought - he knew he was with people who cared for and truly loved him.

I have nothing else to say.

Good Morning CGs!

Happy early morning to you, Tommy. Just got home from work so I'm sitting down for some dinner. You mentioned yesterday about the kids growing up fast. That's true. #1 is in 6th grade and #2 is in 4th. They both like their teachers so far. And yes, I agree it's early to start. But they also get out before June 1st. If it were up to me, they'd go to school year round. No kid needs 75 days off in the summer. Their brains turn to mush.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Tommy, sorry to hear about the pup.

VB, hope you're feeling better after your nature experience.

Gris, don't worry about those rabbits, they breed like...well, rabbits.

Kids started school yesterday if you can believe it. RR#1 said she had a great day. RR#2 said his favorite part was early dismissal.

Looks like the battery on the Corvette might have a bad cell which was contributing to my starting issues.

And on the car topic the alarm on the Honda went off a few times in the middle of the night. Looks like it might be related to the trunk switch. I need to troubleshoot that.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Evening CGs!

Been MIA for a couple of days again. Got the exhaust buttoned up on the Corvette. I wanted to test it out and the damn thing wouldn't start. Didn't have time to tinker with it. Talking with my buddy about it and although I suspected the starter solenoid is sticking, he thinks it's the battery. Tested it tonight and it showed 12.08v, and only 399 CCA out of 650 with a 45% battery life. It's only 2 years old and the tester said to replace. My guess is a bad cell. I'll replace it and see if that helps.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Hope that solves it! The TPS can go bad. My old maf also had a dead spot in the rpm range. A point to ponder.

Good Morning CGs!

Still hot here with high humidity. Makes it tough to work outside (and in the garage). I haven't had a chance to try out the new exhaust clamps yet, maybe today. I'm also supposed to do a little side job on my neighbor's car, a parking brake adjustment on a 2012 Jetta. Not a major task but I guess the shop that did his brakes couldn't do it correctly. Of course there's a specific factory procedure that sounds like a PIA according to the info I printed off Alldata. We'll see. Hopefully I have the right tools...

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Afternoon CGs!

Tommy, belated happy anniversary to you and Sue. 35 years is a long time. We have 13 coming up next month. Better start shopping now

Speaking of shopping, my new exhaust lap band clamps arrived this morning. Hoping that along with some high temp rtv will fix the minor slip joint leak I have between the resonator and mufflers.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Evening CGs!

I made some progress on the Corvette this morning. Even though the cap visually inspected good I decided to change it along with the rotor and coil. Once I did that the miss went away. I don't know if it's possible but I suspect the coil might have a problem in the winding that was not giving full power. As of right now the miss is gone. I still have to fix an exhaust leak at the collector and it sounds like I have some valve train noise on the driver's side that I have to address. Always something.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Evening CGs!

The Corvette still has a misfire that I'm trying to track down. It's been kicking my butt for several weeks now. I thought the new plugs did the trick but apparently not. The rest of the ignition system visually is okay. The wires ohm out good. Last night I took the valve cover off the passenger side because I thought I heard a noise. The springs are all intact and no weird noises. That was a waste of time. More diagnostics to come.

Gris - gun question. I currently have a Smith & Wesson 3953 (a dinosaur by today's standards but I love it). Is there any comparable gun out there now that is a 9 mm double stack, dao, metal gun? Thanks.

Good Afternoon CGs!

I've had a very good couple of days selling tools. That's a nice change.

This morning I change the caliper on the white star and did spark plugs since they were due. RR#2 help me with the spark plugs. He seemed to enjoy it. I let him tighten some bolts and explained what everything was for.

Just finished taking the kids in the pool after my workout. We decided to let the dog try the pool as well. He was not a fan at all LOL. Much different than the shepherds I used to have who loved the water.

Steve, that's a very nice new car. Congratulations.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Welcome back, Tommy.

Marcus, I think a C8 would look good on you. I'd say the same for me but I don't have corn money.

Speaking of new cars I saw a Nissan Murano with Michigan manufacturer plates. They had the logo and name badges covered with black tape. I don't think anyone cares what the new Nissan Murano looks like

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

RR#1 has decided to play the French horn for the middle school band. School hasn't started yet but they have an hour of practice each morning for two weeks to get them prepared. We'll see how far she goes with that and if she sticks with it.

Tool sales have been slow but steady. Lots of work involved but I still enjoy it for the most part.

I fired the car up yesterday but didn't get to drive it. Looks like the starter is still giving me problems despite having it rebuilt. My buddy gave me a powermaster starter to try, hope it fits.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Afternoon CGs!

Got the plugs put in the Vette yesterday but it was late. Today I fired it up and seems to be idling well. Didn't get a chance to drive it. I still need to fix the leak in the iac gasket which involved pulling off the throttle body. Hope to get to that soon.

Wife took the kids to some indoor trampoline place for a few hours. I'm sure they're having a good time.

TB - nice pictures. I'd do the lap driving experience for $50, too.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Evening CGs!

Another late check in. Spent most of the day with the kids. Took them to the water park for a little summer fun. Came home and got the grass cut. After that I actually had a little time to tinker with the Corvette. I got the new spark plugs installed. It's only been a month. That's okay, right? I still have to fix the IAC gasket that I found is leaking when I smoke tested the intake. But that will have to wait.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Good Evening CGs!

Late check in. Been busier than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest. Never a full moment around here. Tried to find some motivation this evening to do the spark plugs in the Corvette but worked on fixing a clock for my mother instead. I'm sure I'll find time eventually.

Marcus and TB - have a safe trip!

Hope everyone had a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Gris - hopefully the new treatment works out well.

TB - sorry to hear about your friend.

Marcus - I'm sure a credit card dispute would get their attention.

Tommy - tell Sue that you'll get the project done. She doesn't have to remind you every 6 months. Now, what was that you said and time not being more valuable than money?

Rain now which will turn into unbearable hot humid air later. Can't wait.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Honestly I think repairing appliances is much easier than cars. I'm the family handyman so between our house and relatives I've fixed half a dozen refrigerators, a few stoves, dryers, washers, microwaves, and dishwashers along the way. Usually it's a small part that goes out but the labor and service cost (plus parts markup) far exceeds the value of the machine. In this case I got a new rear bearing and front support bearing for my dryer in the $40 price range online. Worth it to me.

Good Morning CGs!

Got back from vacation a few days ago. The trip was around 1800 miles round trip from here to MD with a few stops along the way. Back in the swing of things around the house. Seems there is always something to do.

Gris, sorry the repairman had to come out but glad it's fixed. I'm at an unusual point in my life. When I was younger, I had no money and had to fix everything myself. Now I have the money, but I refuse to waste it on something I can do. I'm sure eventually I'll get to the point where I pay someone else to do everything. I'm teetering on the point where time is more valuable than money. (See dryer below).

Supposed to be hot and miserable this week. Oh joy.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Sorry, we've been on a road trip over the weekend. In MD now for a bit and then back home.

Sounds like everyone is keeping busy.

Marcus, to answer your previous question - yes those prices are much lower than the truck. But truck prices are insane. I like quality tools but you'd have to be nuts to buy full price when there's such a large secondary market. The tool trucks survive on mechanics who can't afford to pay in full so they finance the tools with monthly payments.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Happy 4th everyone!

Nothing wrong with a little flipping there, TB. Let me know when you get here, that's when you know you have a problem:

Good Morning CGs!

Things have been pretty hectic around here. Family stuff is number 1 and with the kids off school they take precedence. Had a little trip with them the other day up to the Wisconsin Dells. That was nice. Gearing up for another trip later to visit my sister. Always something to do.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Had some more rain last night. Clear skies now, warm and humid.

Tommy, the wife is pretty strict Catholic and she doesn't eat meat on Fridays. I'm a pretty strict heathen so I eat whatever I want. Of course when she's cooking dinner, I eat fish on Friday.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Evening CGs!

Glad I cut the grass yesterday as today it's cold and rainy.

Still haven't worked on the Corvette. Soon. That's what I keep saying.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Good deal there. I have quite a few Milwaukee tools in both 12v and 18v and I'm very impressed with them.

Good Morning CGs!

Goofy weather here again. Cold Monday and hot Tuesday. Can't get any consistency.

Monday we drove the kids to Springfield (state capital) for a day trip. About 2 1/2 hours each way. They got to see Lincoln's tomb, Lincoln's house tour, the neighborhood he lived in (restored/preserved), and they got to walk around the capitol building. Then we had some dinner and headed home. A long day but the time we got home and everyone was exhausted. But the kids loved it. We'd like to do it again but stay overnight so we can hit the museums, too.

Still haven't had a chance to tinker with the Vette and find the misfire. Hopefully soon.

Marcus, sorry if I missed it but did you have your 1/2 mile run yet?

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Afternoon CGs!

Happy Father's Day to all.

Kids woke me up this morning and had a scavenger hunt for me to find my gifts. A nice little game that they enjoyed.

This afternoon we have a BBQ at BIL's house.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Sorry, it's been a busy week. Lots going on around the house and whatnot.

I have been driving the Corvette for the past few weeks and everything was going good. Of course, that's a sign. Coming home the other night I got off the highway and car started running rough. Feels like an ignition miss. I checked the plugs and pulled one spark plug and everything was good. I haven't had a chance to pull the cap yet. I'll get to it.

That will have to wait because I'm headed over to FIL's house to do a tune-up on the lawn mower and replace the front wheels. Gotta keep the in-laws happy.

Hope everyone has a great Father's Day weekend!

The first thing I would do is clean the throttle body and the IAC. Reset the base idle and check the timing. Clean the MAF while you're at it.

If that doesn't solve the check for vacuum leaks.

Good Evening CGs!

Warm and muggy here. Took the kids to see the new Aladdin movie along with Grandma. They enjoyed it.

Tommy, good score on the wood there. Good luck to Sue with the surgery.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Sorry I've been missing again for the last few days. Busy with work and family life.

My condolences to Andy and his family on their loss. Having been there myself I know how tough it is, as we all do.

On a slightly more positive note it is my birthday today. I'm getting older but every year I try and I still can't catch Tommy. We had a family dinner last night and tonight I will be going to a local brewery with my wife and a few friends. Should be fun.

The weather is nice here. Hopefully it's the same with everyone else.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Good Morning CGs!

It's a nice day here. Warm and sunny for the time being. I got the grass cut this morning and vacuumed the pool.

I saw the flooding pictures, those are pretty amazing. Not a good way but if you stand back and watch what nature can do you are awe inspired. As it turns out we had a tornado touch down in town the other day when we had our nasty storm with hail. That's according to the weather service. No damage at my house, luckily. Lots of roof and siding damage in various spots, though.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Afternoon CGs!

Turned out to be a nice day. I dug out a tree stump last night and dug out a few bushes this morning. We decided to take one more out but that's for another day.

I was going to take the pool cover off today but it rained quite a bit last night again. Draining that now. No rush as I don't have the supplies I need anyway.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Afternoon CGs!

Turned out to be a nice day after some crazy rain/hail/tornado weather Monday and more rain Tuesday. I volunteered at the kids' school today for field day. It was a good time.

Tommy, how is the brake issue? New master cylinder and a brake bleed should fix you up.

Tool sales are in full swing. Sold a bunch over the holiday weekend.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning CGs!

Sorry for the short hiatus.

TB, first thing I noticed was the new signature photo. I perused the missed posts and the pics look good.

Weather here is funky again. Up and down. Cooled off this morning but muggy/humid.

I'm supposed to pick up a new (used) driveshaft for the wife's car today. Buddy has an extra laying around.

Speaking of racoons and animals, had a small herd of deer grazing at the end of the street last night. Mind you, I live in a residential neighborhood. Dog was quite interested in chasing them but that wasn't allowed. So he sat and watched.

Hope everyone has a great day!
