I would like to keep the stock setup, but improve the sound if I can.
The speakers appear O.K. visually but I think the sound could be better. They are 20 years old. Would new ones ($80 ea.) be an improvement? How about aftermarket? They are 2 ohm, correct? The amps are recent. Would lining the cavity with some kind of acoustic material help? What is the purpose of the baffle thing on the right in the picture? It actually appears to be isolated from the speaker. Should I just forget about it, as a different system is not in the cards for the near future? Attach file:  P1010002.JPG (121.40 KB) |

not 2 ohm. 1 ohm.
The only things you can do with the stock speakers are either replace them or fix them! Take a mixture of elmers glue and water, about 3:1 water:glue and brush it over the cone. It will make it more rigid and should improve bass response. Conventional speakers will ruin the sound. The baffle thingy is connected to that grill in the door jam, helps release air pressure when closing the door. That also looks like it works as a port for the enclosure. Two jobs are better than one, eh? I doubt it would hurt to line with dynamat or something of that nature. Maybe experiement with polyfill. It might slow down the air and change the bass response... but for as much as I hate the sound of Bose, they did do a lot of work to get to that sound level. I know the earlier C4s had a dampner in the rear enclosures... so perhaps GM ditched it to save .40 per car. |

Two jobs are better than one, eh? I see that now,(see photo) and the need for it especially when closing the hatch. I don't see any connection to the speaker though. Well I lathered the inside of the enclosure with undercoating and stiffened the speaker mount with 1/4" tempered hardboard. It can't hurt. Also installing a manual switch on the hatch lights in addition to the automatic one while I'm there so the lights can be turned off during extended periods when the hatch is open.
