When I bought this 87 Vett the system would blow you out of the car. Being a little deaf in the right ear (too many years on the pistol Range). I crank it up a little to much 70's thing.
It came with an Alpine 60w with an ARC 4500 clx 2-4 chanel amp. The speaker on the drivers side Dash blew when my son was cranking up "Get a Haircut Get a Real Job". The Tweeter always fell out. I know it is probally Crap equipment but works great. What replacement speakers would you suggest that won't break the bank and not be a waist of time because they are too cheap. Your talking to a guy that thought his 8 track in his Baja bug sounded bitchen.

Thanks
Steve

Well... Infinity isn't bad, neither is JL Audio.

I would look at a 2 way component. They are not much more, but the SQ is SO much better.

Do you know what the dash speaker is?

Oh, and removing the dash won't be fun... Just warning ya. It's not hard, just lots of fiddly screws.

Will know what kind of speaker when I pull the dash off. Who ever took it off last time didn't replace what ever the part that holds the drivers side dash down Less than a 3/8 gap. Will know what it looks like soon. Pretty bored for the next month sitting at home. Already been here for 2 of them.LOL

Is the two way the type of speaker. Been 5 years since I have messed with a system. lots of changes.

Thanks
Steve

As far as your other questions, there are several decent brands out there. I like Polk, amongst others, for a nice budget minded speaker.

A 2 way speaker means it has a separate tweeter for highs and mid-range speaker for well...midrange. The signals are split up to each with a little electronic circuit board with limiters. A 3 way speaker has a tweeter, mid-range, and woofer (though not too large) that generally produces a more precise and richer sound, but the cost reflects that. You should be fine with a decent 2 way.

Low great diagram. Do I have to pull anypart any of the instrument panel to get to the screws? The defenation of the 2 was cool. So if I go whith this type of 2 way do I elimate the Tweeter in the door?

Thanks for this part. Looks like a 30- 1hou job. Lol

"Instrument Panel Upper Pad"
Remove or Disconnect:
1. Battery negative cable.
2. Steering column tilt lever.
3. Headlamp switch knob.
4. Eight instrument panel courtesy trim plate screws and courtesy trim plate.
5. Instrument panel trim plate (fuse).
6. Six screws from instrument panel upper pad.
7. Two screws from defrost duct.
8. Instrument panel upper pad.

Matthew

Looks like you may have done this before. I guess I might as well find a passenger bread box and replace it at the same time. Just want a quality one.

Depends on what you get. 2 way coaxial or 2 way component. Regular 2 way is a single speaker package, a component is two separate speakers:

coaxial 2 way (two speakers glued together, basically)

Steve,

If you were not in a rush, and didn't mind a drive down, I could easily help you do the install.

There are better ways of doing speakers in the C4 than in the dash.

Music gets perverted when it bounces off the glass like that.

Now, a few random ideas:

1. Speaker pods for smaller 4" drivers that would project towards the driver and passenger.

2. 6" and 1" speakers in the doors - more than enough room, it's where GM put the Bose speakers.

3. A combo of both... a 4" and 1" in the dash, firing towards the passenger; 6" in the door. This is the way I plan on doing it for my wifes 87.

Check out the prototype below.

If you would like, I am sure I can make them here, and then instruct on final install. I would need the drivers to do this with.

Power these off the head unit and a 6" mid off the ArcAudio amp... that would ROCK.

To make this work on the passenger side should I purchase and install the Dash panel kit. I am asuming that is where two of the speakers will be placed?

There isn't a lot of space behind the dash panel. So they would go in the speaker grill areas, regardless.

There is a chance that because the 6" mid in the door and the 4" and tweet are high up, that some weirdness could be imparted on the sound... but I dare most ears to identify it. I am sure that with careful tuning, it can be overcome.

Ok I had something else pictured in my mind. Doing a lot better mind slowing down and thinking clear. Hope to get back to work in Aug. Makes perefect sence now. Once I get the tranmission in and the bugs worked out, I will start picking up the needed system. Nothing like making a plan come together.

Wow did I pay attention to what you guys said.
Discovered a lot of people not taking their time . Leaving out screw, not hooking hoses back up, speakers wired wrong. Check out the 4" speakers put in the middle of 4'x6' mounting on the dash. They sprayed some type of foam around the speaker lol and mounted them with plumbers tape.

My son and I mounted Kicker 3 way 6x9 in the rear 6 1/2 in the door and 4x6 in the dash.

We took out the passenger side dash what ever you callet it and put in the flat pannel. That mother without cutting it was a bear to remove. I will sell it on ebay.

I am a happy camper the price for the Kickers was in my budget.

The picture with my son was ready to go home and call it quits. He did a great job.

Was well worth the money.

Any quick suggestion for a base speaker that does not over power and where to put it? My son said it would likely need it's own amp? I know little about this area. I can just install things.

Lol

It will need its own amp. Some guys have built a custom pod into the storage area in the rear deck behind the passenger seat. You will lose that storage, though. You have to fiberglass and seal the area to protect it from water. Looks through some old threads and you will see examples. Nothing bigger than a 10" is necessary.

A little research... prices for Rainbow have come down a lot in the last 8-10 years! Still high end, but manufacturing has gotten a pot load cheaper.

These might be $200 a pair new, today... but 10 years ago? Could have been two or three times that amt.

I had never heard of them. Before they blew they sounded good.

Itold my son about the storage box behind the passenger seat it seams like just a few monthago someone had put a speaker in that same location with pictures.
Sounds like a plan.

Steve

Interesting... most speakers blow due to LACK of amplifier power. As they get played louder, the demand more, and the amp can't provide. As such, they over heat internally, the epoxy coating on the voice coil gets soft, erodes, resticks, the driver won't move or the voice coil shorts out. 1 blown speaker.
