Are these the screens? or the little rubber things under the hood latch that look vaguely like condoms?

The rubber things are designed to drain stuff out of the void under the windshield cowl.

It really isn't a bad idea to clean the area out very so often. It's not so much like the area can rust, but why let moldy stuff form in there? You can use a hose at lowish pressure carefully flood them, lifting out the heavy stuff and then letting the small stuff fall through.

The best fix is a filter that you can either make or buy from Ecklers. It's basically home AC filter material, and it will do wonders to keep that area clean.

I don't see anyone selling the drains... but I am sure you can find them on the used market. Contact Jason at www.vette2vette.com

cool! can't wait to see the pics! Are you doing stock or going custom?

So I was right... was it the screens or the rubber things?

Welcome to the site.

From your description, what you are referring to is called a cowl drain screen. I don't know of any aftermarket sources offhand, but you can find them on ebay, and from the used parts vendors.

Ok, if you were looking for the cowl drain tube, check here - it's the first place that came up on google, so other vendors might have it cheaper:

I don't recommend adding those foam "air filters" over the screens. I bought a set and they retained water and gave the car a musty smell. :-(
