I may need to replace some vacuum hose. A couple of questions:

1) i'm assuming you buy one long length of hose and cut it to the lengths you need. Is this correct?

2) If so, what kind of knife would you cut it with?

3) Is all vacuum hose the same width or is this something that varies by vehicle?

4) If so, what width of hose did early C4 Corvettes use?

5) Beyond this, does some vendor make better vacuum hose than others or is it all the same?

6) If I'm out getting vacuum hose, are there things (like clamps, etc.) I should pick up at the same time?

Questions, questions, questions, ...

lemme see here...

1. yes.

2. basic scissors will do it. There is a special tool for bigger line, but not needed here.

3. there are different sizes, but IIRC, all vacuum lines on the C4 are 1/8" nominal ID.

4. See above.

5. Goodyear makes good hose. Get the stuff for emissions use, better at dealing with heat.

6. Some do use little metal spring clamp things. HELP department for that... problem? they vary in size. If you can find a bunch for the OD hose you buy that would be best. Rock Auto maybe? if you are looking for a bit more security, a nylon tie will work nicely. Get black...

Are you replacing hard lines or soft lines?

For hard lines I use side cutters and a bic lighter to shape them.

For soft lines, side cutters or a razor knife.

I don't recall the size off the top of my head, just bring a sample with you to the store and a measuring caliper if you have one.

I don't remember any vacuum lines that require a fastener with the exception of the brake booster. All the other hard lines slip into rubber connections and the soft lines all slip over a plastic or metal nipple.
