Last week, a WWII bomb washed up on a beach at Felixstowe, England, and the Royal Navy was going to float it off the beach. Well they did but the tether broke and they lost it. A week later, they've found it and have now blown it up.

Felixstowe... I think that was a big vacation site when my mom was a little girl. I will have to ask.

yes, I was right. This is the same place they used to go to for summer outings. About 15 miles from where they lived. It was, apparently, a big deal to go there. The town was more of a resort, not so much a beach. There was a waterfront, but the sand was very rocky and pebbly.

They had something of an amusment park, then, too.

We did come to the conclusion, considering this bomb was dropped in 1942, my mom was more than likely in her folks back yard bomb shelter, waiting it out.

Some real anal history:

The Luftwaffe ran a course west from France, using the Thames (pronounced "tems") River as their road map. After the run, they did a turn to the north east, and after a fashion, a turn to the east. That final leg back to the channel and France took them over my moms home town of Ipswich. The Luftwaffe had a standing order not to land with armed bombs. They were very unstable and could pop on a hard landing. So, they physically kicked them out! Something you didn't wanna do when attacked by fighter or flak.
