The update must be done via the usb port. It cannot be done via CD.

Kenwood has released firmware version 1.09 for the DNX7100.

http://www.kenwood.com/usb/mm_fwdl_en.html

You will be required to enter the serial number of your Kenwood before you can download the software.

This version is reported to fix the slow indexing of usb drives and adds support for the new iPods.

That's good, but it only works if I post in the thread. Over at Brand X under "thread tools" you can subscribe to a thread even if you don't post in it.

No biggie - Just a nice little feature.

Is there a way to "subscribe" to a thread or individual areas of the forum? I find it very helpful to keep up with new postings via an email notification.

Could be that the fuse has been removed to keep from draining the battery.

See this link for fuse location:

Bogus said the same thing about the car catching fire.

Just in case my post was not clear, I am NOT kidding about the possibility of the wiring catching the car on fire. Judging by the pictures of the install I doubt the "installers" know anything about rubber grommets, shrink wrap, fuses, soldering, conduit, etc.

I hope you carry a fire extinguisher. Don't park your car inside a garage or close to the house!

I know you are not going to like this, but I have to say it. A terrible install was done of the aftermarket accessories on your car.

I would seek out someone who knows what the hell they are doing and rewire all of it before your car catches on fire.

If you don't have the factory service manuals for your car, order them. They will have the wiring diagrams that someone working on your car will need.

I suggest you bring back the CF thread and move CF type posts to it. More and more frustrated folks are going to come here and they will need to vent. Better to have the posts in one thread instead of scattering them over the forum.

There are a couple of Metra pre-made wiring harnesses that might work, depending on your install.

Metra 70-1856

Metra 70-1857

You would still need to do the resistor mod at the head unit connector.

I have a '96 FSM. The 96 FSM page 8A-150-0 shows that the yellow wire is fed from the RDO fuse and goes straight to the tuner module in the rear. The tuner module does feed the PPL wire to the radio control head with switched power, but I would not recommend using it. As soon as you disconnect and or remove the tuner module this circuit will be open. In any event, the DK GRN wire is a DATA wire that connects the rear tuner module to the radio control head.

You need to extend the wires from the rear tuner module connectors to the new stereo in the dash. The yellow wire will be one of the wires you extend, in addition to the speaker wires, power antenna control and the antenna coax wire.

Do you have the Bose amplified speakers? Do you intend to reuse your factory speakers?

On your new stereo, do you intend to use speaker outputs or RCA outputs?

If I'm following the FSM wiring diagram correctly the yellow wire you are referring to is actually the 9-DK GRN-DATA IN/OUT wire on the factory in-dash wiring harness. I got a 10v reading on this when testing with my multimeter. I think this is how it may work... I will connect one end of both resistors to the 9-DK GRN-DATA then one end of one resistor to the 2-PPL/WHT-LED CONTROL and the end of the other resistor to the 3-GRY/BLK-LCD CONTROL.

So what method does everyone use to connect the resistor? Sauder? I've had very bad luck saudering in the past. Will crimp caps work?

Thanks again for everyones help.

NO - Do NOT use the DK GRN wire. The DK GRN wire is a DATA connection between the tuner module and the head unit. You need a switched 12v circuit for one end of both resistors, which the yellow wire at the rear tuner module provides.

I saw the SYS flash on my way home yesterday. I figured thats what you were referring to with the transistor mod. There's no way to get rid of the SYS in the tune? I'll pick up the transistors at Radio Shack since I have to stop there anyway. What is the yellow wire it is referring to? Can I just use the orange wire off the harness since it is 12v and I will not be using it? See post below.

From JEFNLSA on CAC
Here it is:

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new (aftermarket) stereo, he will need to do the following:

1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2pk for .29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

It works.....

The yellow wire listed above is the yellow wire from the tuner module connector in the rear compartment, which you need to extend to the aftermarket radio in the dash. This yellow wire is switched 12v and is what you should use for the resistors and the switched 12v requirement of the new stereo.

The wiring harnesses I listed earlier will extend this yellow wire to the dash of the car.

The resistor mod is to keep the CCM from flashing the "sys" error message due to removing the factory stereo head unit which causes an open in the factory dimmer circuit. The resistors add a load to the circuit fooling the CCM into believing the factory stereo is still in place.

Don't forget to do the resistor mod at the head unit plug or you will get a flashing "sys" error due to the open illumination circuit.
