I will be more than happy to check it out.

Remember, this software is more then likely dead... but once I find a new ISP, I am going to swap it all over and see how it runs.

If it runs better, it will allow me the time to configure new software... and we get the performance back.

I am so proud. <sniff>

let's see...

Battery cables: Your numbers are not that far off. But I have noticed that corrosion can creap up the wire... and anything like that will increase resistance. Increased resistance = lost energy. So it would not hurt, considering the age, to get new cables.

Transmission: I can't help you with the transmission questions, perhaps Casey can. Pete comes back from time to time. I think he will start hanging out more now that traffic is increasing.

Bulbs: To get to the bulbs, you have to first remove the digi-dash. It's not hard... just a lot of screws around the edges... and it does take time. The bulbs themselves are simply twist in plastic fittings. Very simple. The bulbs... hm... I think you can get them, but I can't remember the code for them off hand.

Door: This is easy. GM sells these little nylon inserts that act has nuts. They are the right part with the right fit. They come in bags of like 20 or so.

Spoiler: It is time for a new one... once they collapse, they are toast. I would consider one of those big mouth intakes... I am gonna get one.

Radio: Explain skipped? These cars did not come with any shielding. That is an old school fix. HEI wasn't as prone to this problem as the the old points and condenser distributors were. I would make damned sure the ground is right. Any whining coming from the speakers? What brand is the head unit?

If you need parts, call Chris May at Superior Chevy, 1.800.728.8267. He will get you any GM part at a great price. Tell him you are a member of C4 Guru...

Check ESPN2 at 7pm EDT/4pm PDT. That's when coverage will be shown.

Damn... poor John. That sucks. I like him a lot. I am glad the injuries are not life threatening. But still...

Toptech is dead nuts right... the powerslide is so popular for door slammers it ain't even funny.

As an aside, top full and funny cars do not have transmissions. They take engine power through a series of clutches. Mash the pedal and wait for all hell to break loose.

that leads me to an interesting question...

Is this reman to PBR standards? Or GM standards?

PBR supplies parts to GM, but those are made to a set standard. Is PBRs standard better?

To be honest, I would be stunned if it was a chinese reman. more than likely, a chinese knock off.

Remanufacturing would imply the OEM part was sent all the way to China for rebuilding... that does not make a lot of sense to me, from a scale of economies. All that shipping can't beat the cost of doing it here.

When they rebuild them, AFAIK, the big part to replace is the diaphram. Now, I would not be surprised of the rebuild kits are coming from China...

As for our weekend? We are gonna watch some football, a bit of racing and go to dinner with a friend tomorrow nite.

wow, kiddo, we need to work on your lack of usage of the enter key. :toothy8:

Not all Asian nations make junk. A lot of the best electronic boards come from Taiwan and Thailand. Japanese firms make some of the best circuit level components around... capacitors, transistors. You name it. Great stuff.

The problem with China is that American firms are trying to cut costs; be damned quality. And people are buying it.

Autozone is not bad on some items... the brake pads? junk-o-rama, but the warrantee is a onw shot deal. You don't get new pads for life. Just once.

I have NAPA rotors on my car. Just be sure to get the ones made in USA or Canada... Chinese smelting plants SUCK. Japanese stuff is marginally better, German, and much of Easter Europe for that matter, are quite good.

My dad passed 30 years ago. What stories where were, I got some... but not on tape.

My sister-in-laws father was a combat solder. He faught in France and Germany in late 44, thru to the end of the war.

He only started to talk about it because of Saving Private Ryan. A great film, that I think was lost on some people. Utterly riviting.

hm... you need to invest some $$ in the Helm Service Manual...

Brakes are not hard. Infact, the system is very simple. Even with ABS, the concept is still the same.

And in this day and age (since the late 70s at least), brakes have become so damend reliable, it ain't even funny. The chances of them totally failing is rather slim.

So, which part was made in China? The booster or the master cylinder? I doubt it would be worth it to Casey to ship a booster to Australia, tho... seems rather far... and the box big.

My last master cylinder came from Advanced Auto - that was 5 years ago! Works perfectly. It was a remanned part, tho. Musta been done right, eh?

Check NAPA for parts, but be careful. They have good parts and they have cheapo parts. Make sure the ones you are getting are the good ones. IE, made anywhere but China.

I am rather shocked that all of this lead paint debate regarding Chinese made toys hasn't trickled into other areas, considering the overall crappy QC they offer. Honestly, what can you expect for a couple bucks a day?

Your research is about spot on. The numbers vary from source to source, and a lot (particurally the total WWII casualties) is rather hard to quantify.

50-60 million is including civilian deaths, but that's strictly an estimate. Some sources estimate that total to be closer to 100 million. It is thought that the USSR lost 40 million people alone.

The MIA number changes, too, as they find remains.

My dad was a fighter plane mechanic. P51s in England. Your grandfather would have flown B-17s. The B29 was used in the Pacific.

Sounds like your grandfathers had quite the experience. It is a shame they didn't talk about it. So much history was lost to their personal demons. Not to say they were selfish, no, the system failed them... they weren't given enough time to decompress from the stresses of combat. Most unfair.

yea, from the persepective of brake safety, I would say you are a-ok.

I would take some good tape (I highly recommend 3M 130C rubber tape) and wrap the connector. That will keep it weather tight.

The 3M 130C (refers to it's temperature rating!) is great stuff. It's about $12.00 at Lowes/Home Depot. You take off a 2" piece, lets say, and then stretch it. It will nearly double in length. I always snip off the ends where I was holding it. Don't over stretch, it will break.

Then, wrap it tightly around the item in question. It is very resistant to heat and quite nicely resistant to most chemicals. Great stuff.

Pretty much all the Japanese import trends come straight from Japan.

For some reason, over there, there seems to be a trend towards gaudy... no element of restraint to create a potential style statement. I can't say as I get it, but I suspect it's a deep seated issue about the rigidity of Japanese culture in general, and the modern freedoms they enjoy.

In short, the Japanese love what America represents. And some of those designs are their personal intrepretation of how we would do something.

I want to see the new Air & Space Annex... it's out at Dulles. A bit of a haul, but well worth it.

The Vietnam Memorial is an interesting thing. I haven't seen it yet, the last time I was in DC proper, the weather was yuck, so it was skipped. However, I do have to ask a couple of questions:

Which US War did we experience the most casualties?

1. US Civil War
2. WWI
3. WWII
4. Korea
5. Vietnam

How many (approximately) MIAs were there from Vietnam?

1. 23,000
2. 322
3. 3,000
4. 9,000
5. 14,000

How many MIAs from WWII?

1. 79,000
2. 232,000
3. 42,000
4. 19,000
5. 120,000

Answer later.

It's a 20 year old car, rubber dies.

The part in question is the brake pressure sensor. When it detects a problem, it turns on the brake light. I don't exactly remember how it's installed on the earlier units, but I want to say it's screwed in.

As long as there isn't any leaks, it should be ok. If the light is off, it should also be ok.

The check engine light is unrelated, unless... there was a rat and the damned thing is chewing on other parts of the car. Tonite, put some rodent poison under the hood. Rat/mouse whatever will eat, leave and die. Just remember to remove it before driving again.

oh, yea... sure... salvage is the best way to get one of these motors.

figure it will have under 60k miles. The chances of real internal damage are slim, unless it came from an f-body. The problem with engines from F-bodies, the cars are owned (mostly) by young people who ride them hard and put them up wet. Abused is the norm.

Trucks and Vettes are the best source for the engine. You can then mate a 4L60E from a 95/96 Vette (again, f-body transmissions are prone to abuse).

Truck owners, like Vette owners, care for their rides. Truck owners USE them and need them to be in good shape. Vette owners are just anal.

Used is not a problem...

The EPA has determind that "truck" engines are different from "car" engines because of different emissions standards.

Here is the shocker - the only difference between a 5.7 litre Corvette LS1 engine and a 6 litre truck engine is - get this - THE BLOCK. The Vettes is aluminum, the truck is iron.

Big deal. You can run a truck engine with a car PCM, and it will burn as clean as the car equvilent.

Infact, LPE uses iron blocks on their hot TT motors. I don't know the legality, but if they are buying bare blocks, I don't think there is an issue. Besides, your average smog guy won't put a magnet to the block!

What matters is if it blows clean out the tailpipe.

Don't fret an illegal motor... this isn't stolen, and enforcement is spotty at best.

If you do select to install an engine like this, get one from a good, reputable salvage yard, and have them ship a copy of the salvage title, to prove it wasn't acquired from a chop shop somewhere.

You can get 5.7 litre LSx motors from F-bodies and Corvettes. Plus the GTO. The 5.3 litre can come from Impala SS's and a few other FWD GM sedans, I don't remember them all. I also don't know if the FWD version will convert to RWD or not.

If you expand into the truck line, there are literally MILLIONS of engines out there... 5.3 and 6.0 litre, plus, some of the Escalades are now running 400+ hp 6.2 litre motors... all aluminum, too!

You will have to ditch the transmission... your best bet is to use a 4L60E from a later C4 or from an F-body, and install a C4 tailshaft housing. The biggest issue will be wiring. You will have to integrate the engine harness to the rest of your car.

But think of it... 350 utterly reliable horsepower... with no more effort than plug and play. It would take time, but it would be a very streetable combo...

It's a bug in the current software... I am not wasting time fixing it.

New software is in the works, and will be available soon - I expect the end of Oct, early November. Much will depend on the data conversion.

before you dig into that, you really need to understand the basics of an engine. How all the parts interrelate and support each other.

Reliable is more than just good parts, it's those parts assembled properly and carefully. A good engine can be build from cheap parts, as a bad one from expensive parts.

If I was dealing with an iron head L98, I would do this:

Consider an LSx swap. It handles ALL your problems, and gives you so much growth potential... it ain't even funny. The 5.3 litre truck engine is selling at fire sale prices now-a-days... Convert to a manual transmission and life is grand. The 5.7 litre truck engine isn't far behind... they made lots of them, and technically, putting that engine into a car is illegal. But as far as I am concerned, if you use a car tune on the PCM, it don't matter.

The amt of work needed to make the L98 truly reliable AND powerful is not something to be taken lightly. The engine control electronics are a mess... and by the time you spend all that $$, you still won't be able to keep up with an LSx motor.

whoa... dude... you need some help with that paranoia... the world ain't out to get you... and if they are, well... uh... get them first.

I don't get bothered... I am 5'11" and nearly 300lbs, no one in their right mind would try to mess with me. Hell, I could fall on them and do serious harm.

I read that thread title and thought you meant if my car was scary to drive or whatever. I didn't expect this! I will say, tho, I have a healthy respect for my Vette... and a genuine fear of my brothers old 1967 427/435hp tri-power... that thing could put the fear of God into anyone... 450+hp with no brakes or tires!

it really depends.

A rod bearing - of which there are a total of 8 halves - can be done without much effort and without removing the entire engine.

it really depends on what they can do without major machining.

If the crank was screwed up by the bearing failure, then they have to rebuild. Otherwise, it can be done in as little as 2 hours. Seriously.

You will have to check the repair order to see what all they did. And, how long did they have the car?

yea, well... it does.

For some reason, I thought you had some more miles on it.

I would use a quality synthetic. Try Mobil 1 or Valvoline Synpower. Either way, they rock. You can also take them 5000 miles with no worries. I do.

Ah... the oil change made no net effect on your bearing failure. That's for sure.

I like the K&N filter for one huge reason - the nut at the bottom!

The only real problem with synthetic oils, especially on older engines, is taht synthetics find leak points - they don't CAUSE leaks - just find the ones that are there!

If it was me, I would stick with conventional - Castrol GTX is a good option - and wait until you rebuild to go with synthetic.

the library is going to get a new look. I love the graphical way, but I am going to add a "master list view" option. That will speed up the selecting process.

I see where you are coming from.

I do disagree with one point, that is the that oil is not oil. Brands to make a difference, but once you get to the mainstream brands (Valvoline, Castrol, et.al.) they are about the same in quality.

It's the no-names that worry me.

I use synthetics, mostly, because of the fact it is factory recommended, but also because they deal with heat and gas mixing better than conventionals. Over time, the synthetics will help reduce sludging.

I saw the insides of a 90 L98 that had about 80k miles on it. The valley was filled with sludge. I was stunned the motor wasn't trashed.

I am not replacing this combo, just adding another. So if you like this you can keep it!

More than likely, tho, the new combo will be the default C4 colour, but all colours for all gens will be available.

For example, you like the new red theme. Cool. You get a C5, and the theme there is, say, Yellow. You don't like that, so you can use the C4 theme there.

Simple!

caravans - anytime a group of Vettes are going to the same place at the same time. I figured this out when I was part of the Stars and Stripes tour... I led 120 Vettes over Outerbridge Crossing from NJ onto Staten Island. Trying to get them to follow me was annoying... Patrick, from Digital Corvettes, had strobes, and they were very useful for showing the rest of the pack who was leading. He was directly behind me and brought the group together with a quick blast.

Mine are mounted internal. You can't see them. I have one in each front cornering light and then one in each backup light.

Parades... this is the #1 reason to join the local Corvette Club. They are always called to take cute HS girls down the street for home coming! It is great fun, too.

I was in the homecoming parades for my HS, and two other neighbouring schools. The best part? Crawling along at 5mph, and seeing all your friends! It's so slow and so personal, that with the windows down and the roof off (the girl is up on the halo, sitting on a towel), that you can chat to any number of folks!

I had one girl at my HS homecoming (the first year I did it, 2002). She was a freshman. Poor kid, never done anything like this. Was so scared she was gonna fall off! Her attendant was holding her right ankle, I had her left! Mind you, I graduated in 1983, so the only thing I was worried about was getting this kid to the football game safe and sound!

The parades are great fun. It's a nice civic thing to do and just a fun way to get involved and see friends, too. I highly recommend it.

I agree. Searching is a great way to learn, if only to ask the question more knowledgably.

It's one thing to just ask a question, sure, but if you have researched it, the knowledge gained will be very helpful. And perhaps DOES expand upon the base knowledge available.

For me, it gets old when people ask the same stupid questions over and over and over again... if I see another question about "is Mobil 1 ok?" Or, "which brake fluid is right for my baby?", I will literally scream into the night. They are not only pointless, they are inane.

yea, that box is causing some issues.

I like the idea of moving it down. As an aside, the box is not interfering with the mechanicals, it is more than likely upsetting the ABS computer.

I do have strobes, but they are cheapos. I use them for parades and caravans. If they are off, you can't see they are there, and there is no law against having them, the law is against using them.

this is frostking.

Resized Image

it's an adhesive backed foam, very dense, with a tin face. It's cool stuff. It's also cheap. It's used in climate control ducting.

Home Depot, about $17.00 a roll, 12" x 15' x 1/8".
