ESPN3 is online streaming, only available in the United States through some broadband providers. I'm getting it over Verizon FIOS, and I know some Comcast users can get it. The full list of affiliates is here:

If you have such access you can hit it through:

I'm also hunkered down for the duration. I've got my spotter's guides and my live timing.

I'm having a little trouble getting used to the relative lack of commercials on ESP3. The picture is decent - I'm running an HDMI out from Lenovo's new ThinkPad X120e netbook to my "last of the high quality mid-size DLPs" Samsung.

Good morning, all.

Scary stuff in Japan - looks like things are okay in Hawaii.

I'm hard at work today preparing my review of the iPad 2 for the university. Tonight, Ivelis and I are attending a charity concert by the boy choir I sang for back in the late 70s/early 80s.

... yesterday was the seven year anniversary of Lauren's arrival on an open trailer from Salem, OR. I remember that first day: it was so dirty I could barely see and I didn't know where many of the controls were or how to operate them. I got it home on the sketchy tires and complete lack of alignment and cleaned it up enough to post a couple of quick pictures.

Things have changed: we took it out yesterday (for the first time this year) and I took a quick shot with my snazzy new 50mm AF-S lens:

I will have to check my fsm, there is a troubleshooting procedure for the oil pressure sender to narrow down if it's the sender, wiring, or dash. Did you do this, yet?

Matthew

Matthew,

It was a GM unit. It did work (well) for six months. I'll take look at my FSM - I guess it could be the wiring. This is one of the three things that have to be fixed before I attempt a Performance Verification in May.

[1985, 68k miles, very stock]

Why would an oil pressure sending unit fail in less than a year? The sending unit was replaced last March. When it was replaced, it read these (good) values:

50 lbs. cold idle
30 lbs. warm idle
50 lbs. warm 1,200 r.p.m.

The new sending unit has now failed (I noticed it in November) and mostly reads 80 lbs. (the upper limit of the LCD read-out). This is exactly the same failure pattern of the previous sending unit.

Does anybody have any idea what could be going on besides simple bad luck?

A little hung over this morning - too many Manhattans last night and I never learn ...

... I'll watch the actual Daytona 500, though I don't have much hope for the quality of racing. I'll avoid the "pre-game", because I'm beyond sick of all the Earnhardt Sr. discussion. Those of us who were fans of his (and I'm one of them) would like to deal with his being gone in our own ways, not whatever FOX and ESPN have decided on.

Nice to hear that Pruett at least somewhat resembles his on-screen persona. He sometimes sounds like he is going to retire and when he does I will feel a little bit older - I've been following him since the 1980s.

I hear you about the DP cars - they've grown on me slowly, though I think it may the drivers, not the cars. The Rolex is one of my markers for the beginning of another automotive year: Barrett Jackson last week, Mecum and the 24 hours this week, Philadelphia Auto Show next week, Daytona 500 in three weeks.

After that, it's time to start ramping the 1985 up for another judging season and get the 2003 ready for another traveling season.

Anybody else hunkering down for the Rolex 24 at Daytona today and tomorrow? Only two Corvettes, but there are a couple of Chevrolet-powered prototypes and some Camaros along with the usual Porsches, Mazdas, BMWs, and a single lonely Ferrari. For weirdness, we have two Pontiacs - a GXP and a GTO.

The race starts at 3:00 PM EST on Speed. They'll run until 10:00 PM and than start again at 9:00 AM in the morning.

It's also cold here in the Philadelphia area, at least for us - it's in the high teens.

Drove the wife to her workout and the parents to church.

Watching an hour of Barrett-Jackson this afternoon and than hunkering down for the two NFL games. No favorites in them, just interested ...

Have a good Sunday, all.

... I took the 1985 out today on a run to the Home Depot (lightbulbs and JB Weld as per BillH, if you must know).

Christmas Eve always feels a little strange to me - I usually have no family obligations until Christmas itself and there is little consulting work to do. So, this time around I told myself that I would take "Lauren" out if the weather was decent.

It was more crowded than I expected on the roads, perhaps because it was cold (around freezing) but clear today. The L98 loves this weather, but the rest of the car doesn't: the body creaks and something in the suspension groans when the road changes height. GM HVAC has always been the best and I was grateful for a functioning heater this morning.

The car certainly looks good on these bright winter days and there wasn't much competition; there were a ton of toys out yesterday, but very few today (just a couple of silver Porsche's).

All the best to you and yours this holiday season.

The top of the line for refinishing any kind of wheel is Wheel Collision Center:

http://www.wheelcollision.com/

I do concur with the poster who points out you might be able to get unrestored rims in pretty good condition for a good price.

There's a guy I know fairly well in the NCRS who does extended road tours (we did a thousand plus miles with him in 2008) in his black 1963 Z06 and still got his Duntov award at this year's National. It can be done, but it sure isn't common.

So they docked you for the headlight switch, but then gave you bonus points for a sticker and fire extinguisher and other stuff that isn't original at all?

These cars aren't fire hazards, so I don't get why they are rewarding anyone for that, as if fire extinguisher is going to stop a car from burning to the ground or being salvaged anyways.

There are always exceptions. The fire extinguisher is mostly a relic from the old days, when folks drove hot Corvettes in and parked them on grass. It's very common in the old car hobby - you see them at AACA meets, etc. I don't mind having my Halon with me.

I'll tell you the truth: if I had not gotten the 97%, I would have retired the car from judging for a couple of years. C4 judging is getting steadily tougher as the judges learn the cars and Lauren was just about as good as you can get a 66 thousand mile early C4 without trailering.

Correct part number, wrong date - and no question there: they came off a 1987.

(so you can see how things are on my side of the fence)

I got my score sheets back yesterday from the NCRS Columbus Regional at McDorman's in mid-September. The results were as such:

Operations: perfect except 5 points for the driver's side low beam (the switch is dying and got steadily worse during the trip out). Got the 10 bonus points for fire extinguisher, battery disconnect, and NCRS sticker). So, 745 out of 740.

Interior: did pretty well here - the worst deduction (4 points) was for the rear hatch support rods, which A) are service replacements and B) have faded bushings. 756 out of 774 possible points in this area or 97.7%.

Exterior: worst deduction was 10 points for my non-original, incorrectly dated glass top. The judges also thought my paint was sketchy, which is correct. They liked my completely undriveable Gatorbacks (trucked out to Columbus by a friend of mine) and were merciful about the clearcoat separation on my wheels (time to send those back to Wheel Collision Center). 1147 out of 1179 points or 97.3%.

Mechanical: I got killed on my service replacement battery - further research has revealed that I was attempting to copy the 1986 battery instead of the 1985 . 10 points lost there and an additional 5 each on the air filter housing and the valve covers. 1117 out of 1158 or 96.5%.

Chassis: I took an expected 8 point hit on the mufflers and exhaust tips, which are correct but not original. The big surprise was the PCV valve, which was completely wrong (not even an AC Delco service replacement). 4 unnecessary points lost - ugh. 613 out of 649 or 94.5%.

Total RAW score: 4378 or 97.2% - by the skin of my teeth the 97% necessary as a McClellan qualifier. Now, back to attempt a Performance Verification; probably some time next year.

Worthwhile. Driving a base rack compared to my Z51 rack feels like driving a school bus.

It drives like a truck anyway!

I remember the first time my wife followed the 1985 she couldn't believe how often I was moving the steering wheel...

The bane of my existence, with my early C4 - shouldn't it be better for you?

Looks like a working garage to me - when I'm in a garage like this, it's usually with someone who has a lot more knowledge and experience than I do...

Good morning, all. Really wet in the Northeast - we've had about 6 and a half inches in the last two days in my town.

Tommy, have a great time: what cruise line and ship?

1993 Black Rose Metallic, with charcoal grey CLOTH interior and base C60 climate controls!

Black Rose Metallic is a great color and stripped Corvettes always seem to have interesting stories. 1993 was the last year for cloth seats and you can see why when you look at the numbers: they were less than two percent of production. With Black Rose Metallic at slightly over four percent this color combo could easily be 1 of 1.
