Anybody else hunkering down for the Rolex 24 at Daytona today and tomorrow? Only two Corvettes, but there are a couple of Chevrolet-powered prototypes and some Camaros along with the usual Porsches, Mazdas, BMWs, and a single lonely Ferrari. For weirdness, we have two Pontiacs - a GXP and a GTO.

The race starts at 3:00 PM EST on Speed. They'll run until 10:00 PM and than start again at 9:00 AM in the morning.

I hear you about the DP cars - they've grown on me slowly, though I think it may the drivers, not the cars. The Rolex is one of my markers for the beginning of another automotive year: Barrett Jackson last week, Mecum and the 24 hours this week, Philadelphia Auto Show next week, Daytona 500 in three weeks.

After that, it's time to start ramping the 1985 up for another judging season and get the 2003 ready for another traveling season.

I have to like Pruett, I raced with him in karts. And he has a house right up the hill from me at Lake Tahoe.

When we built the Reno kart track in 1999, Scott contributed some nice busks towards the construction.

I also raced with Buddy Rice, Memo and Joey Hand.

I'll wait for them to come to VIR. It's so much more interesting to be there to me.

I'll be watching the start as well. I'll be back and forth between the Mecum auction and the race. I'm being a couch potato today.

On VIR -- I missed the National Corvette Museum's HPDE last year because my engine was down. If all goes well I'll be going this year and doing the Prime Drive with Dave Farmer for my instructor.

Nice to hear that Pruett at least somewhat resembles his on-screen persona. He sometimes sounds like he is going to retire and when he does I will feel a little bit older - I've been following him since the 1980s.

Getting ready to watch a bit with breakfast.

I am with Bill... more of an ALMS fan, but, my neices best friend, Jessica, is married to one of the DP drivers, Ryan Dazeil, so I watch for them, so to speak. I mean, I have only known Jess since she was like born or something.

Why not drive too! A one day Prime Drive is only $100
Includes classroom and several track sessions with the instructor.

By the way, I messed up and read last year's entry sheet (I must be having problems leaving 2010). There are no Corvettes or Pontiacs this year and there are two Ferraris actually running ...

the winners Rolex's are nice - rose gold, IIRC. About $30k each.

Now... some horological trivia... Rolex did NOT design the escapement in the Daytona. It is actually the Zenith Elprimo escapement, but modified.

Because Rolex wants the day to be at 3-o-clock, they deleted it from the Zenith design. Zenith puts it at 4 or 6.

The Elprimo escapement runs at 36000 beats per hour; the Rolex version, IIRC, is at 28000. They slowed and recalibrated it.

The best part? A new Zenith is about $7k... a used one about $2k.

I have a Robec, it's a stop watch with wrist straps. It does tell time too.
You have to have at least 2 stopwatches at the track, 3 is better.

So, I'm up early thinkin' I'll watch while I'm waking up.

Damn west coast, the race isn't on for another hour.

I missed a bunch working on this stupid kitchen.

Kinda glad I'm watching now and not crewing. Staying up 42 hours in a row doesn't have the appeal it used to.

It truly is amazing the TEAM effort required to make this happen. Of course I was rooting for all the Chevrolet teams but every team did really good and deserves a celebration. I enjoyed watching and I learn new things about road racing every time I watch. So much more involved in road racing than drag racing!! LOL

There's so much more involved in even roadracing a single car effort than most people realize. Especially if you want to run at the front.

On a car like the MX-5 cup cars, just the pre-race nut and bolt check takes 2 hours. About 1 hour on my car. Done every race. The amount of shop time is huge.

Going to an endurance race takes a lot of prep, even one likr the NASA 25 hour race takes practice and set up days with the drivers and volunteer crew (a boat load for the crew).

Fun though.

Endurance racing is just that - ENDURANCE.

I have absolute respect for those that do it, and even more for those that win and win consistantly.

Look at the well oiled machine that is Audi... 2001, midnight, the trans fails on their R8, they bring it in, and in under 5 minutes swap out the entire rear section - trans, clutch, rear suspension and brakes.

For them, they knew they had a bad trans... it was good for maybe 14 hours, but since Le Mans was the only 24 hr race, it was better to engineer a swap than a new box.

Watching that team go through the swap was inspirational.
