Here in SoCal, it's been much cooler. Chilly for us, really.

Overnight lows are into the high 40s, daytime, maybe 70.

It's the 40's part that is chilly. The 70 part is pretty damned near perfect!

Thinking that a month ago, we were using A/C, and here we are now using heat! We have the furnace set to 65, it usually kicks in about 0500 once or twice before the sun comes up. Takes the edge off. We also have a little electric/oil space heater. It's a very nice deLongi. It is an oil filled radiator that is electrically powered. Heats the bathroom perfectly.

Otherwise, a busy day ahead!

This season in WEC was a great learning experience and with some wins. 2nd here was a win!

I am curious what the future will bring... but as long as the Corral's stay, all will be sorta ok!

this is a super common problem on, of all things, Ferrari's.

There is a firm in MD called Sticky No More, https://stickynomore.com/, they will remove that coating and apply a new coating. It lasts longer and won't break the bank.

There are other fixes involving hydro-printing. Essentially, a water transfer.

Out on the left coast, just busy as hell!

Super important work projects... lots of changes there, too.

The reality is very real. Gasoline, as it sits, is a toxic material. It is made up of unchained hydrocarbons and as such, is a known atmospheric toxin. The average lawnmower will leach more gas vapour into the atmosphere in a day than a car will in a month... or some stupid statistic like that.

A vintage car will absolutely pollute more with a full tank of gas in it, just sitting there, not running, than a modern car will driving... I don't remember the ratio off hand, but the numbers are mind boggling.

I have stated this before, but I do live in Los Angeles. I have seen pollution first hand and it lives in the basin.

You see, LA is basin. There are mountains on the north, east and south sides, and a cold ocean, with an ever present inversion layer, to the west. This keeps the area stuck in it's own air for long periods of time. The native indigenous population called LA the "great smoky valley" even 200 years ago, because of the way the smoke hung in the air.

Back in about 1968, after SMOG was first identified and named, they put air filters on the roofs of tall buildings in downtown LA. These filters were white things with slats and a thick white filter paper inside. They captured particulate emissions.

After 1 day - ONE DAY - they were pitch black.

Fast forward to 1983 (or so), and those same filters could sit up there for 90 days and turn just a light shade of off grey. Improvement. Yes, it had its cost, but the benefits are worth it.

The reality? The simple act of adding the PCV to an engine cut emissions by a real percentage and didn't effect performance one damned bit. EGR, same thing. And it helps cut down on knock, win-win. The real ding was the early catalytic converter, those things were junk and sucked power like a cheap hooker. Add in the drop in compression ratios, the change in horsepower ratings, and yes, the regulations sucked...

However, tech caught up making modern hot rods impressive as hell... You can walk into your local Dodge dealer and walk out with a 700hp sedan that still gets 20mpg on the highway, for not insane money. Deals exist on used Corvette Z06's, where you can get 505hp, 24 mpg highway, for under $40k!!! And it's daily drivable. Insane in the membrane...

1948, or so, the steel industry in Pittsburgh was polluting the air so bad that it left the city cast in permanent midnight. And don't forget when the Monongalia river caught fire! Look it up.

I am not some leftist tree hugger, but I am a realist and I like to breath clean air and drink clean water. That requires thoughtful regulation.

So, if you want to breath clean air, think before you let some conspiracy theories or neo-NAZI propaganda confuse the issue.

As for the emissions part, yes, there is a vacuum line. As I said, the valve array is under the ASR servo. There are a couple of lines that feed it and come off the left side of the intake. You should see a couple of 1/8" hard lines, and some soft lines, down below the A/C compressor, heading to an area below the ASR servo. Not hard to follow, just be careful what you disconnect and what you connect, I think those lines also feed the ductwork inside the car.

Toss in the suspect connector and all sorts of failures are potentially present.

The MAP is very important to helping the engine get the right fuel flow. Without it, all hell breaks loose!

upon reflection, this is the evap system. It runs from a valve gang under the ASR servo, and vents fuel vapours into the charcoal canister.

you see, evap emissions are a real problem. As gas evaporates, it is a hard core pollutant. And this is a simple way to pressurize the fuel system and capture and burn off the vapours. This makes an epic impact on emissions, without effecting performance.

I agree, if you can find ethanol free gas, that's the shit.

Also, I read recently where Formula 1 is aiming at a 100% carbon neutral fuel within the next 3 years. Get this, this stuff will be 100% compatible with all cars, not just modern ones built for it.

I then watched the last episode of Top Gear (UK version) and learned that Paddy Lowe, an F1 engineer and overall genius has proven you can make a liquid fuel that is carbon neutral. It uses CO2, harvested from the atmosphere, mixed with hydrogen to create a liquid fuel that is 100% synthetic. Because it is recycling CO2, it is effectively reburning existing CO2, not adding anymore.

In my thinking, that would also reduce, effectively, the CO2 in the atmosphere. Think about it, to produce enough liquid fuel in advance, there would always be a drop in atmospheric CO2 to prime this new liquid fuel.

Bastet44 (my wife) figures this would kill off the electric car in minutes. The internal combustion engine would live on and be improved.

We would not have to depend on foreign oil or Russian lithium. And all the mess of dealing with mining crap for batteries or a clean method of recycling would be mitigated. We could then focus clean energies on fixing our grid and not on powering our cars.

At this time, the fuel costs about 10 UK Pounds per litre, and that proves it is not impossible. If this works out, it would be an epic game changer.

I also see this being the basis for a JP8 type of fuel, too. Figure that kerosene, diesel, JP8 and #2 home heating oil are super close on the cracker scale. The US Military lives on JP8 - trucks, tanks, planes, ships all run on it. It seems to me that starting with a gas fuel, mixing in some vegetable oil and a little more science and we have a JP8 replacement.

Keeping my eyes on this project. F1 has provided so many tech advances... ABS braking systems, modern EFI engine control systems, active suspension, turbo engine tech, performance tires... did you know that the Goodyear Eagle Gatorbacks, introduced on the 1984 Corvette, were the son of the Goodyear Eagle F1 wet weather tire? If this works, F1 will save the automobile. Just in time when our existing oil based refinery systems are in dire need of upgrade. Consider this tech would not be married to coastal regions, at least in theory, it would open up all sorts of remote areas to new refinery locations... more remote, with wind and solar power? All we would need are some water pipelines... damn...

don't use E90 on an older car. The ethanol will eat the rubber bits and the ECU isn't coded to handle the fuel requirements.

If you are concerned about plugs, I use nothing but NGK.

Heat... each day, the AC kicks in earlier and earlier... We have been hot, too... but dry.

And with the monsoons in the area, the humidity has been higher. So it's been icky!!!

It's nice this morning, for a change... it's been muggy as hell here. And hot... Which is very odd for this part of SoCal. The muggys is good, keeps fires down, but also causes the a/c to kick in at 1:30 vs 4:30...

There was a hurricane off shore, pumping humid air up here... all we need now is some rain.

The big news is that finally, it has come to the point with east coast floods and west coast drought, we need to push water west!!! Time to build a via-duct to move some of that water out here.

This is one track I would love to visit. The original plan had an extra mile or so added... if you look at the map, there is a little short straight bit... the plan was to add about a mile into the woods. never did happen.

I like the timing issue... it fits and considering the changes made to the TC, continues.

First morning with gloom in days and the breeze and cooler temps show it! yay!

Been busy... went to San Diego last weekend... drove the C6 and got about 20 mpg on the congested 405 and 5 freeways. We stayed at the Marriott Marquis in the Marina district, downtown. Lovely experience. The hotel restaurant, Marina Grill, was FABULOUS.

The interesting fact, the valet service only has about 8 folks, out of 45 total staff, that can drive a stick!! According the the valet manager, some hotels won't even valet cars with sticks!!! damn...

no clue... I am not knowledgeable enough about how torque converters work... the biggest void in my gearhead knowledge base, actually.
