I would start with Vette2Vette and all the other salvage yards.

I assume there is a reason why you want/need this prom?

The second one is the last and best of the four 1985 A4 PROMs.

Andy will laugh (or sigh), but do I have better odds just buying a mild aftermarket PROM than finding one of the late factory originals?

You have another choice... getting your existing prom flashed with all updates.

I would think that many of the tuners could do that, or even a chevy dealer, if they still have the stuff.

Andy,

I'll admit to being somewhat clueless here, but I don't believe my PROM can be flashed - that's left for the newer cars.

It can.
No big deal for a tuner that owns the bin file, and the correct equipment.

It requires a cradle, a cable and software to talk to it.

You may want to reach out to mseven. Also, what about using an even later revision tune for the L98? Say, 1991? Would that work?

See! Seven years and I still don't know anything.

I don't think the later tune would work because my computer is dumb and (more importantly) slow.

The 1985 computer vs the 1991 computer isn't all that different... except there isn't a cold injector, so the prom wouldn't know that.

So 1987 is as late as I suspect you could go.

The computers did change over the years, but it was internal and refinements, not structural revolutions.

Don't beat yourself up, most people only care about a flash on the chip when they have installed a 383.

Another person to reach out to would be TJ Wong.

I get caught up on the raw 160 baud refresh rate of the 1985 and prior devices - does that not matter here?

I sent mseven a PM.

I honestly don't know how the baud rate effects the chip - my guess, not much.

The baud rate is the speed of the ECU to an outside device, not the speed from the O2 sensor to the ECU.

However, I defer to mseven on this.

To me, the biggest issue with those is that everything (bin file, burner, eraser) is specific to that ecm. The bin file for those is very limited and there can be no substitutions with other files/years.
I don't remember which one I have here and really wasn't aware of the one JR posted. Because I change almost all the values it hasn't been a concern. I can look around and see if I can find that file. If so copying it and burning a chip isn't that big a deal.

Wow! I didn't realize the 85 was a one-year-wonder like that. I guess at the same time I didn't know it wasn't, so deferring to you was the right move regardless.
