The amount of zinc and phosphorus in motor oil was reduced even further with the latest API "SN" standard. Is there still enough zinc and phosphorus to protect engines from excessive wear? How about older engines, newly rebuilt engines, or engines with flat tappets? Should car enthusiasts look for ancient bottles of motor oil at estate sales? MotorWeek's master technician Pat Goss provides the answers in this four minute video: http://www.youtube.com/user/RockAutoL ... re=mhum#p/u/6/xILCJc2o_L8

Watch that video... it clears up this entire zinc problem that isn't a problem.
I like Motorweek, I just wish that John Davis didn't talk like a 2nd grade school teacher. |

Well... it does but in a very simplistic manner. Higher levels of zinc are still good for every engine, just that if your engine has higher mileage and is burning oil, the zinc/phos may do damage to your cats. Not scientific, but my engine builder says that if the engine is not burning oil and is running efficiently there should be now worry from higher levels of zinc/phos. Not sure if this is the best advice but I know he is adamant about higher levels of zinc. I know we have had this debate before but thought I'd throw a log on the fire. BTW -- I have been a guest of Pat Goss twice now! |

I have read about zinc until I was about blue in the face... and the common thread seems to be: * Newer, roller rocker engines, no problem. * Newer, OHC engines, no problem. * Older engines, with flat tappet, might be a problem, so add Zinc. From what I have gleaned, zinc helps with shearing forces, more than anything else. |
