I'm putting the top end of the engine back together and of course forgot where s cluster of wires go. At the back of the engine one of the wires that connects to the distributor comes down to a condenser that then attaches to a stud with several other wires. Where does this stud attach? Is the a ground strap that attaches here also?

That condenser is the tach filter.

I can't visualize that the wire from the tach filter goes to a stud. That's odd.

If the wires are all black (which I suspect they should be), they should bolt to a stud that mounts to a bell housing stud.

Otherwise, I would wait until CentralCoaster can chime in.

this is also why I recommend folks take pictures as they take stuff apart.

If IIRC the 85 tach filter is the same as a 89. The tach filter , which does look like a big condenser, secures to the same bolt as the bundle of ground wires at the top left side of the bell housing. This is to provide a ground for the filter, assuming it is a factory type with one wire in and one wire out. The aftermarket type does have a extra wire just for a ground. The filter can be secured anywhere on the engine just as long as it has a good ground.

I recall mine had a small bracket that attaches to the back of the head on that side. The harness would probably clip to that.
