Sorry I read the FAQ's and didn't feel comfortable that my question was answered

What is required to put an aftermarket head unit in my 95

I have a delco system.

I saw this mounting bracket 99-3051
Resized Image

are there other options?

What wiring is necessary?

This is just a head unit change (no amps, subs, etc). I'll probably go with some new speakers later.

Exactly which system do you currently have in your car? Do you have the Bose with amps at each speaker?

What are your intentions? What do you want to install?

It doesn't make any sense to put in a HU without new speakers in these cars, especially if you have Bose.

If you have non-Bose and you insist on keeping the factory speakers, then you will need to:

- extend the antenna cable from the rear storage compartment to the HU.

- run new speaker wire from the HU to all the speakers (or you could extend the factory speaker wire from the rear storage compt but that would be just plain silly

- find appropriate sources in the dash for power, or extend the power from the rear storage compt (again that would be silly...)

- perform the necessary mod to prevent the SYS light from flashing (see FAQ)

If you have Bose, then you also will need line level converters to convert the line-out from your HU to an appropriate level for the Bose amps.

I DO NOT have a Bose System.

I intend to put speakers in the car but right now all um doing is the head unit. Mainly to step up to CD, MP3 technology.

I'm going to install a single DIN Kenwood fairly low end unit.

The FAQ's suggested that the HU and Receiver in the non Bose system were separate pieces similar to the Bose. Is this the case?

yes. In the 1990 to 1996 audio systems, the head unit and the receiver module architecture is identical. The main difference? The recievers are where the difference occurs. The head units are dummys in this design. The reciever is what decides what happens next - does it have to power speakers? Or does it send a low level signal to an amp?

That's it.

The head unit is just a controller for the tuner/amp in the rear compartment. Most of the wiring you will need terminates at the tuner/amp, and you will need to extend the wiring and antenna lead to the new stereo in the dash.

This Metra wiring harness is designed to extend the wiring from the tuner/amp in the rear compartment to a dash mounted aftermarket radio with powered speaker outputs.

http://www.installer.com/item/display_item.php?it=70-1856

You will still need to do the resistor mod because the factory head unit interfaces with the dimmer circuit, and removing the head unit generates a computer code that will flash "sys" on the digital dash display.

Thanks all for your responses.

I Spoke with an installer at Best Buy and he suggested eliminating the whole system and letting him wire an all new system. Of course this is considerably more expensive than just a head unit. He was suggesting a 4 channel amp, new speakers all the way around etc with an install cost of ~280... not what I was planning on.

On another forum their FAQ's said this system could be upgraded in stages as I was planning to do.

I don't need it to be real loud and I don't need/want an elaborate system. I just want MP3/CD capability in a system that doesn't pop and crack. I had anticipated just changing the head unit and then replacing the speakers.

Is there a significant difference in the results that "I" would gain by doing a complete renovation? or would my original plan do the trick?

Where can I find instructions on the resistor mod?

Thanks for all your help.

Well... when it comes to the NON Bose system, you CAN do it in stages... But I would run the new wire, if nothing else.

You see, I wrote the FAQ you reference...

When you say wiring, do you mean just the kit

Resized Image

or do you suggest wiring everything direct to/from the head unit? with a basic GM harness?

Where can I find instructions on the resistor mod?
