Hi again all, time to start working in the list of fixes!

I just replaced the starter on my 1991 L98, it would not start when hot due to heat soak. That problem is fixed, the starter now always cranks on the first attempt, hot or cold.

However, if/when it doesn't fire up on the first crank (separate post coming on that), after waiting a few seconds, sometimes (intermittently but regularly), I will only get a "click" from starter/solenoid but no crank.

It varies, sometimes I will get 2 or 3 full cranks, other times, one click then a crank, other times, 2 clicks then a crank.

Any thoughts? Thanks guys this site is the BEST!

Joe

90% sure it is the battery. I fought this very thing about a year and a half ago.

My suspicion was that the battery was going out. Pulled the 2 year old battery, had it tested, and it passed. After that rebuilt the starter and cell, but the problem did not go away. Pulled the battery for a 2nd time, took to another parts store and the battery passed again. Put the battery back into the car and same problem. Now I was frustrated, so I took the car to yet another parts store. Pulled the battery in the parking lot, they tested it, and it passed. Took the store manager out, hooked the battery up to the terminals, and click, click, start. I wasn't about to go through this again, so I just told him I want a new battery. Installed the new battery and have never had another issue. Ok, enough rambling. I'm till angry about that fiasco!!

Just sharing in case you start down the same road.

Interesting, I would not have suspected the battery, especially since it's a good Interstate only about 2 years old, and it now (since I fixed the headlight motor drain!) holds a charge for quite a while. Thanks for the info though, you never know.

Likely the ground wire isn't getting enough ground. Clean up the location where the ground wire bolts to the block. You could even try getting another ground wire and ground it to a new, clean location to see if that fixes the problem.

I'd agree with what both of them said. I'd look at getting the battery load tested (or even just replacing since you had drainage problems in the past) and check all your wiring for built up gunk and/or corrosion
