1985, very stock, original hood

I have owned this Corvette since 2004. Something is wrong with the hood setup, and the passenger side edge forward of the front wheel is abrading fairly significantly off at the edge (click to expand):

Resized Image

This is probably at least partially being caused by the lower front cap alignment:

What do folks think? Has anybody seen this before? Is there some kind of adjustment I could make?

Second pic, there's an adjustable rubber bumper (right above the coolant tank in the pic).
First, does the rubber show contact with the hood? And is the place on the hood shiny from contact.

I'd loosen the lock nut and move it up one turn. Gently close the hood then, recheck.
You can also check the gap between the hood & bumper, then adj. the bumper, recheck, etc.

Thanks Bill, I'll try that. The rubber does show some contact with the hood, but I'll test and see if it is current/recent.

Once you get the hood aligned, then get some touchup paint to fix the damaged area.

Oh, and it's great to see you visit again!!! WAAY too long...

Beside the suggestion/option to raise the bumper/foot, the front bumper basically attaches/aligns thru it's connection to the front wheel well. If you loosen the screws in the front portion of the wheel well, you might be able to get some outboard movement of the bumper. You could even resort to elongating the wheel-well holes just a smidge to get more -- if necessary.

Since the bumper is urethane (and pliable), you can pull it out more at the top than the bottom if you like/need.

Seems like there's also an L-bracket or two involved. Sorry, but it's been about 8yrs since I swapped out my front bumper (to get the late style bumpers).

Thanks for the advice, Greg.

I'm on more than you think, but I've become more of a lurker. Ivelis and I are doing registration for the May 2011 regional in Wildwood, and it's taking a big chunk our of my Corvette time.

Update from the garage:

1) I put some white lithium grease on the two bumpers and closed the hood. When I opened it, there was some contact on the passenger side and almost no contact on the driver side. I ended up raising the driver side three full turns and the passenger side two full turns. I'm now getting solid contact on both sides.

2) The screws in the passenger side front wheel well were all the way to the outside. I took them all out and re-aligned the passenger side of the front bumper to more closely match the fit on the driver side. I put the screws back in and put some lithium grease on the hood where the abrasion is. When I closed the hood, there was no contact with the relevant part of the front bumper.

I'm going to call this issue at least temporarily fixed. Thanks to Bill and Greg for the effective suggestions. It's amazing what I can do with a little context and confidence.

One more question: is there anything I can do about the divot in the hood or should I just live with it?

i just got some 3M Structual Adhesive to bond thr studs and cracked glass on the underdash heater core housing on my 67 Coupe.

I can easily try it out on sone glass in the shop today if you're interested.

Probably the least expensive, supposed to bond good. And you'll have the tubes to use with other things. $17

There's other stuff out there depending on how much you want to spend, Lord Fusor, SEM and 3M automix but they run $35.

The stuff I'm trying is white but even if you find black, it will not match your black unless you're very lucky.
You'll have to touch it up with paint.

Also, I'll bet JB Weld would work if done right.

It all depends on what bonds to SMC...

Like my association with my 1985 has anything to do with the rational expenditure of funds!

Actually a lot of products bond to SMC very well, the internet's blown that out of proportion.

At this point, I'm not recommending the stuff I have, seems to stay slightly flexable and doesn't want to be sanded, I'll try it in the morning, But it does bond tight to f-glass.

The slight problem with the EZ sand above is that it's supposed to be used with an applicator gun that pushes both tubes at the same rate. The gun's $36 min. You could make up something to push bith tubes at the same time.

If it was me, I'd try JB Weld, if it falls off (which I don't think it will), you've only lost a bit of time and 4 bucks.

When you do this, use masking tape to protect the paint on the other side and use tape around the repair area as close to the area as possible. The tape will act as a sanding guide, sand or file until you start to see tape where you overlapped the repair mixture.

BTW, do NOT use any type of cleaner on the bare SMC, it can soak it up and mess with the repair bond.

If it's dirty, grind it out slightly to get to clean material.
