about six months ago i bought a programed chip from these guys. deleted the following, vats, air pump and associted parts, set fan for 195 degrees, ninth injector, and speed/rpm. today went out to drive the vette and it started badly and the ses light was on. let it warm up and shut it off and pulled the codes. 12 and 51. cked the fsm pointed me toward mem-cal. pulled the ecm and reseated the adapter and mem-cal. same results. cleared the codes. still the same results. has anyone wused these guys programming? does it seem possible that the ecm would just quit without any other associated problems. i did notice that whwn i originally started it today the fan was running like it was in the diagnostic mode. when i was pulling the codes the ses light would blink intermittently and when i would push on the mem-cal it would clear up and display the codes by blinking. is there a vendor on the forum that repairs our ecm's or would it be cheaper to just buy one on ebay. any help would be apperciated.

Are you using a piggy-back adaptor? I assume you are. Before buying/repairing a ECM I suggest removing the piggy-back and install your mem-call back in it's original position and try that. At least this tell you if it's the new "chip" or the ECM.

first, who did the chip?

second, ECMs for 87s are a time-a-dozen... but also check with K&B Corvette Products - see left nav bar under "Supporting Vendors" for contact information.

i am thinking it isnt the chip because it would give codes for all the stuff i deactivated with the chip unless the codes have a hiearchy to them that the 51 would only show over all the rest. does that make sense? the chip is made by tpi-parts .com. its a camarro and firebird site mostly. it worked fine uo until now. it deactivated the vats also and the car did start just had the code and ran really rough. everything is pushed in really well. yes it is an adapter style chip that plugs into the ecu and the mem-cal plugs into it. thanks for ur replies.

It wouldn't necessarily give all those codes. Your original chip should also be mounted on the adapter for limp-home mode.

Try your stock chip without the adapter and see what happens.

got home today and removed the memory adapter and reinstalled the prom. apparrently that was the problem. strangly enough it didnt throw any codes for all the stuff i had removed ie.. air pump egr air switching valve and related stuff. emailed tpiparts. net hopefully i can get a replacement adapter. thanks again for your help. does anybody have a suggestion for a different site to get a programmed chip, possibly someone u have used in the past u were happy with. it is a 87 dual exhaust no cats cold air intake.

If the adapter is bad, I got mine from moates.net. Good quality there.

Chips.... pcm4less, mseven on the forum here, a few others are out there.

the adapter is a moats i guess these guys get them from them. seems weird when u just have ehe prom in it will run fine for a few minutes and then starts on the 51 again. if u push on the prom gently it will clear for about 30 seconds and do it again. took apart the ecm ckd the board nothing fried or heat spots. when it does it the fans come on and it runs super rich. idle surges to 15 and comes back down. then just dies it will restart every time if you cycle the key off.

Guess you found your culprit! Perhaps the ECM has some cold solder joints or some issues from vibrations/age that you can't see easily.

changed the ECM this morning. everything is back to working the way it should. all the changes made by the chip are working as they should. just seems weird that it would just give up like that. oh well, at least i know the fsm was right after all.

Excellent! Glad you figured it out. I hate it when the flow chart is right (it usually means changing something you don't want to!)
