OK, getting ready to replace the cat on my '91...quick question, on the stock exhaust) is there a 'doughnut' between the rear of the cat where it connects to the rear 'Y' pipe? or is it just a pressure fit?
I could not find any parts listing for a doughnut/gasket in any of my manuals etc. Right now there is an exhaust leak around that fitting and I'm not sure why as I haven't taken it out yet. Thanks! |

It's a pressure fit... get a new donut and life will be grand.

IIRC, there is... it's white when new... about 4" round.
I will have to check my books. But I am nearly certain that the rear fit had a donut and the front was a slip fit. L98 ppl, help me here! |

On my 89 there are no gaskets, and I'm almost certain there is none on the later models. What happens at these joints is sometimes there will be a carbon build-up between the "ball" and the concave flange. These need to be very clean, I use sandpaper to get the metal nice and clean. Also check for a slightly bent edge on the "male" end. This will result in a exhaust leak.
Joel PS: Forgot to mention= tighten the bolts evenly. Too much torque on one side will cock the flange and it will not seal properly |

No gasket on my 89. The 84-85(?) had a different rear flange bolt pattern, not sure if they used a gasket. Buy there shouldn't be one on the 91. Joel gave excellent advice above.
