ok.. so i was trying to help out a friend today that has a 66 gto that has no engine in it.. when he got the car it had a early pontiac 400 in it.. long story on why he doesn't have it now.. but he got a 75 pontiac 400 and has a conversion mount set. the mounts and brackets all fit the engine fine but the bolt holes wont line up when dropping the engine into place. does anyone have some insight on this any maybe some pics of the correct mounts that we need to get. the engine he currently has have 3 bolt holes on the block. with the adapter plates and what we thought were the correct mounts its like an inch and or so too wide. i didn't get to take any pics but know what i am looking at if you have any. we were thinking of using the trans am mounts that came with the engine but it looks like the block would be touching the firewall or not be able to go on the mounts.. we are scratching our heads.

Are you sure he had a 400 in it? The '66 GTO would have had a 389. I don't know a lot about those engines but maybe there is a difference in block casting between the two engines. Maybe get a set of 389 mounts and see if they bolt up. The 400, assuming it was a Pontiac 400, should be the same. I think the Pontiac 400 casting stayed the same through it's years, though I could be wrong.

i know it came with a 389.. but its had every engine under the sun in it.. i know in 95 they had a 454 in it and it blew.. then i know the engine was replaced by a pontiac 400. he has a ton of the pontiac parts off the old engine. the earlier 400 had different mounting holes then the later ones. he has a 75 400 out of a trans am and has adapter plates and a hand full of mounts but we don't even know if we have the correct mounts to put on the adapter. we spent most of the day clearing the shit off and out of the way to get the car out of the garage and collecting everything he had to see where we were at as far as parts and what we may need. we just bolted everything that we thought was correct and tried dropping it in but it didn't work and didn't want to keep pulling and installing. its an hour and a half drive one way for me so now that we know what parts we have its just a matter of seeing how its suppose to be and then taking that knowledge up there. i searched for 3 hours yesterday alone to try to see if i could see if someone posted a pic of the swap.. i will continue to see what i can find.. i am going to join a gto forum and start picking brains.

wow... are we sure the mount adaptor kit is the right one?

Just because it fits the engine doesn't mean it will fit the car.

IIRC, the 389 and 421 were the end of the line for that block, and the 400 came out... and the 400 was much like the engines for Buick and Olds, start at 350 and go up to 455 on the same block architecture.

I am not saying the Pontiac/Olds/Buick engines are the same (far from it), but they share that ability.

It is a cool car, tho!

yeah.. cause the trans am mounts are more forward then the gto mounts and the adapters move the mounts two inches back. the engine is in the right location with the adapters but the width of them is too wide for the frame pads.

If the engine is in the right place, can't you pull the adapters and either slot the mounting holes or drill your own?

So long as the position of the engine is correct it doesn't matter how the adapters bolt to the frame.

this is the adapters.

this pic is a block that has all 5 holes.. the two that have the paint rubbed off are not on the block that we have for the car. and are the ones we need.. go figure. instead you take the brackets above bolt them to the lower existing holes on our block and then you bolt the mounts to the adapter.

now the issue is what is the correct mounts to bolt to the adapter. i have walked into this never even seeing a 400 pontiac before let alone the opportunity to work on a 66 gto. i don't know what was used on previous engines nor can i find out what is the stock engine side mount for a 389.

so my next step is to get 5 gallons of gas and a bbq lighter and call it a day. i asked this on yellow bullet. stating in every post that i don't know what the correct motor mounts were. i got like 5 replies to use the stock motor mounts.. well no shit genius. i have a handful of "gto" motor mounts, whats the correct one.. and all the mounts seem to be wider then the frame pad. not to mention if you get one side bolted into the car the other side will be an inch too wide to fit down on its pad. i know on ever car i have EVER pulled a motor on the mounts had little to no play when lined up. so at this point all the mounts we have are possibly wrong.
