Getting my ducks lined up for a future project.
When I do my repaint I plan to paint the underside of the hood the same color as the body. I saw a Grand Sport where the owner had done this and had also included the white stripe to match the exterior of the hood. It looked fantastic. Any tips? Looks like it would be a good idea to have a few helpers to do this chore. In looking at my 91 it appears all you have to do is to remove the headlight assemblies, unbolt the strut on the driver's side and then remove the 4 bolts from the horizontal portion of the two small hinges at the forward edge of the hood. I figure it would be much easier to clean and repaint the hood when it is laid upside down on some padded sawhorses. Your experience and helpful advice is much appreciated! |

Pulling it is pretty much the way you said.
You're going to have to do a good job of degreasing. I'd use full strength Simple Green and a couple washes with a heavy concentrate of Dawn. Blow out all the cracks/holes with your compressor inbetween. I do my hood's underside once a year this way (on the car). |

then hit the underside with lots of laquer thinner to clean the final residue off.
you may also want to consider routing the under hood lighting wires inside the rail thingys. Also, if you want vents in the hood, this is the time to do it. Same with a hood bulge or what not. Remeber, once this is done, you will be stuck! |

Drill several 1/8 inch holes through the hinges and mounting plates to help with alignment during reinstallation. You will be glad you did..

I wouldn't advise that. Laquer thinner may make the existing paint soft, it's not a urethane paint. You're better off using a prep sol but you definately don't want to use it anywhere near bare glass (like a scratch). |
