Mines a 12 bolt straight axle dont know how much different..

Want to do it in the car. Is there a PN for the seal, how much to torque? I know this is pretty crucial for the life of the rearend. Its all new internals so dont want to screw it up.

Its different. Most factory D44's use a shim system to set drag on the pinion brgs where as a GM 12 bolt uses a crush sleeve.

With a 12 Bolt you have to be very careful not to over-crush the crush sleeve when you put the pinion nut back on again.

There is not specific TQ value for the pinion nut. When the rear gear is orginally set up you you tighten the pinion nut until the crush sleeve crushed enough to apply the correct drag (breakaway) on the 2 pinion brgs which is 18-25 inch lbs...

The pinion nut is usually a lock nut so they don't back off.

The best way would be to take the ring gear and carrier out and use a TQ wrench to turn the pinion so you can determine the amount of drag on the pinion brgs. Remove the nut and yolk and replace the seal. Then put the nut back on and tighten until you get the required amount of drag on the pinion brgs.

Messing with the rearend is a little over my head. It only has a few miles on it but was done yrs ago by the best guy around whos retired, rearend is perfect. Im afraid Ill screw it. May have to look him up and see if hed give me a hand. Doing it as far as the seal sounds straightforward Im just worried about changing something in the rearend and having noise or another issue. No fear of tearing into t amotor but trannies rearends Ill pay for. Used to anyway
