Love this car, had it since new, trying to keep it whole and not replace Bose system. Currently unit plays CDs with orig sound quality consistantly, however the radio tuner function is not consistant ie it will tune the station and play normally for awhile then revert to loud noise, which will clear randomly (the right bump??). Thinking it's connector related, the control unit and receiver connectors were opened and cleaned to no avail. The ant grounds were verified and ant itself pulled from receiver but complaint remains.
At a loss as to where to go next (praying that receiver hidden behind rats nest does not have to come out).
Anyone have some useful tests I've missed??

Welcome, Chipper!

It sounds like the SVC may be on... it does weird things like that. It's on the volume knob and allows for volume compensation as the car speeds up.

If all else fails, contact "Dr Don's". They are the leaders in Bose maintance and repair.

Does this mean the music station you've tuned to stops playing and it's loud static, or just the music station gets louder? If the station keeps getting louder I'd have to agree with Andy, he knows a lot more than me about the bose. If it turns to static, then I'd figure a wiring problem.

Dr. Don's is the go to guy for bose problems.

Good point, Matthew... if anything, a "loud noise" would tell me it's something inside the receiver module.

The receiver isn't that hard to reach... IIRC, it is in the dash for 1991, but it could be in the rear bin with the ABS brain box. I would suggest checking the Helm Factory Service Manual. If it is in the dash, it is easily accessed via the glove box.

Thx much for quick response. Couldn't wait to try your suggestion, but it didn't change the behaviour. As I said I'm reluctant to remove the receiver until all other possibilities are eliminated. There are quite a few connectors and wire bundles to be moved. Maybe you can point me to that expert you mentioned?

Thx&Regards

to be honest, I would be SHOCKED if it was a harness issue. The interior harnesses are very durable.
