Well willcox delevired the door weather strip today. The door carpet is due by friday from orvette outh. The air dam arrived as well as the new headliner kit.

Once I figure out how to remove door panel and ,carpet I will be ready to install new door carpet, Cut holes in it for round Kicker speakers already installed. The round speaker grills looked bad over the square holes. I have a brand new wiper switch to install. I will install the new door rubber from WillCox. Put that back together and then replace the headliner. Maybe there will be time to install the new roaters?? No

But if the temp reaches 98 on Saturday it will be Miller Time.

Door panels... rather easy...

Lots of screws along the bottom carpet area.

One screw above the hatch release button.

One screw behind the door handle light fixture.

One screw behind the manual door lock slide - best removed unlocked and with a small flat head. Still prone to breakage, tho... be careful.

Two screws in the door grab handle.

I am not sure if 1987 had it, but there might be one more screw at the front of the door.

I went to Fasenall and bought a 100 count bag of stainless steel #8 x .75" phillips head screws. They look REAL nice when you replace all the screws with SS. You may also want to get a 100 count bag of #6 x .75", IIRC, some of the console screws are smaller. You can replace all the screws around the interior with the stainless and makes a really nice finished look.

I also had the a-pillar covers, windscreen header, the rear hatch trim, and the halo cover all covered in black alcantara. It's a fake suede looking thing. It really looks sharp.

Steve - the door panels aren't too hard to get off, like Andy said - a bunch of screws. I think Wilcox might have instructions on their site. You can check there.

Great picture and the other info on the carpet replacement is awsome . My next step was that and the rear hatch seal. A little at a time is a lot and not getting in over my head.

Sure glad I bought a ned Hitachi Driver /Drill to put those computers together for school.

The hatch is rather easy.

First and foremost, let the new seal flex out (this applies to all seals, really). Open it up, let it sit on the driveway in the sun for a while to soften and stretch.

Lift open, using a 2x4, prop up, remove the pneumatic struts.

remove all the screws that hold the parameter trim in place, including the halo. Let it all drop free.

Remove the old seal. LEAVE THE WHITE GOO BEHIND!

Now, you will have to set the new seal in place, so the glass hatch will need to be supported by hand to get the seal into position.

After in place, put the 2x4 back in to hold the glass, then starting at one of the corners, start whacking it in with a rubber mallet.

Reverse assembly to put the trim back in to place. The hatch will force the final fit, and will take a couple of days to fully stretch out.

Sounds easy but I heard it can be a pain in the but sometimes. Will take my time.

Had the Speaker wires fall into the pedals . We thought one of the speaker on the dash was lose. You would hit a bump in the road and you would hear a rattle from the dash.

We removed the dash and found we didn't push the drivers side part of the dash into the slott correctly.

Fixed that waiting on door carpet.

Soon as we get door carpet we will be rolling. Forgot to take pictures of the dash fix. I don't remember a lot at my age just that I am sober and tired when we were working on it.

Found the wires were connected to crossovers so now my son has to go back and change the way he wired it. I think he just wants my car.

I think he is jealous of this picture.

Not much I can say. Maybe I should order more weather strips for the upper door?

Willcox and Corvette-Rubber are my go-tos for this stuff.

The piece you are looking for is the A-pillar. It goes all across in one piece.

Just ordered the a pillar weatherstrip. I heard it can be easy or a pain in the butt to install. Any suggestions on starting in middle, either side or what. Heard it can be tough to put in on top of glass?

Also was told glue is not really needed. If you mess up you will tear it up fixing the problem. True or false?

When the rest of the stuff gets here it will be a fun weekend. Willcox is a good price. Ebay has a lot of knockoffs.

Weatherstripping removal is a pain. Get adhesive remover and some plastic scrapers. I also used wood shims to get in there because they are thin and won't scratch. Install wasn't bad for me. I think I started in the middle and worked my way out.

Wilcox is a good brand for weatherstripping. I had a chance to check out the weatherstripping Melrose sells, too. Not sure if they are the same manufacturers, but it was very soft and pliable. The stuff on my new top is way better than the other replacement weatherstripping I have.

Oh, a little bit about weatherstripping. The C4 strip from 1984 to 1994 absolutely sucks. They finally redid it in 1995.

The material, essentially, had too thin a skin. The finish surface stunk and tore easily. Once torn, done. The newer stuff is denser and less prone to tearing.

The best sources are Corvette-Rubber.com, Wilcox and GM itself.

You want the latest revision material from the 1996 Corvette. It is a better material that won't break down and won't tear as easily.

I remember you told me that and before buying from Wilcox I asked them that and they assured me these would be as you described to me.

Right now waiting on the carpet , it hasn't been shipped yet. The a pillar should be here by tomorrow. I will probally break down and buy the B pillar tomorrow.

We are out of school ende of this month and I won't be teaching summer school till after June 8th. I will be trying to improve the car's looks this summer.

A little at a time. learning a lot about C4s LOL

Well the door carpet arrived it looks great. Rear hatch rubber, door rubber, head liner kit and the air dam are all here. Next week the a&b Piliar weatherstrip should arrive.

Son is coming over tonight he used to lay carpet I will let him cut the holes in the carpet for the speakers. I hope to be busy this weekend.

Lots of help from you guys makes this a lot eaiser. But you know I will be cursing someone while doing this. Mostly my own.

Great instructions on the rear hatch seal Andy. I forgot who tols me to use a dermal tool with a wire wheel to clean slots but it sure made it a hell of a lot eaiser getting that old crap out.

It is interesting to see what some other nurd did to repair something. A really odd use of adheavise.
Forced the bolts in that hold seat belt strap in place. Bolts stripped out. Going to look for a tap and see if I can restore the femal threads. Bolts are toast. on to next seals or the head liner will see after a nap.

Next weekend we will work on the door weather strip.

Does anyone know if Ensolite for the door insulation is worth the money? It was a lot cheaper then other ones.

I already ordered it hoping the car might be a little bit quieter.

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.d ... 15a~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000050F

Boy you guys were right the new strip really seals tight on the rear hatch.

Thanks again for all the help.

that door stuff will work. It's going to help kill road noise, but don't expect a massive improvement.

As for the seatbelt bolts? damn... 15674851. The Parts Fiche does not give size for that bolt.

I would suggest the dealer. You don't want to mess around with a cheap bolt in that spot. I don't know what to suggest about fixing the nut... it might require cutting and welding.

It was funny at the auto parts places they looked at me like I was a nut. I have been in the windshield before and after 7 brocken ribs 20 years ago, I don't want to mess around.

The sound is irritating but my bad hearing in my right ear is the main problem (to many days at the range). Was hopeing to find to help.

I suspect that all of GM used the same bolt... it would have to meet the requirements for DOT as type approved hardware component for the restraint system...

Glad you found a good one and were able to clean out the threads!

The guy at the wrecking yard said the same thing.

When everything arrives I will have all the weatherstriping and can slowly replace one or two things each weekend.

Well piller came in today and thing it was going to be a quick easy job I jumped right into it.

I quickley learned what a pain in the butt removing weather striping after it was glued down reallyyyyyyyy good. Tried all the tricks you guys told me some worked in places most of it just boiled down to who was going to win me or the weather striping.

Well it't took over an hour of cursing and swearing. The wire inside the strip was rusted badly some was torn when I finished it was ripped to pieces.

Instlation of the new part was easy.

Getting help from you guys makes this so much eaiser.

Door when everything gets here may try hood liner tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks Guru's

Well just got back from a ride, there is so far a lot less road noise less ratteling a distinctive smell of rubber. The roof weather strip and door foam sound things should be here next week and the roof weather striping.
I may try hood liner tonight or tomorrow.

Letting everything settle into place is eaiser than I thought it would be.

Thanks for all the advice.

At this point in my life last year they had me on so many drugs for PTSD I couldn't find my keys if they were in my hand.
School-work- is going great.
Being busy and the friendly help from all here has changed my life for the better. Less stress at home and the knowledge that if I have a problem with fixing my 87 someone here will give me straight advice.
Thanks to all

Headliner lol do it yourself kit should include a new backer board. lol

Barley got it loose. Had to glue it back together and put a new paper backing on it.

Very happy with the way it came out. it will dry in my living room over night. Too many cats sneak into my Garage.

Well the top weather strips were glued in and it was a pain taking them out.
They were easy to install. The retaining screws were rusted out so I used my left hand drill bits to remove them.

I new the top would be a little hard to pull down to tighten them stupid bolts up. After pusning and pulling did not work I laid across the top and on my belly tried to pull them down. LOL Looked like a monkey ???????? a football. Got down used my flash light to line up the front bolts and low and behold success. Did the rest the same way.

I hope the last part for the doors showes up friday if it does I will be installing door weatherstrip, wiper switch, and new door carpet. My son I hope can make it as he wants to work on the stereo and cut out the holes in the carpet for the speakers as he says I am blind as a bat. New contacts and glasses showing up next week.
Trying to think of the name of those driving glasses I want to buy my friend in Lone Pine talked about.

Door weather strip, door carpet, door insulation, and wiper switch replacement.

You know when you open up pandoras box you take many risks. Turns out wiper switich is ok . The blades don't always go all the way down with the new switich/just when they are ready to. Plastic pieceses by the window where cracked were thr felt strips cannot be replaced. electrict lock switich mounting bracket has problems.
Pictures are out of order the uagly nasty carper and the plastic should of been some of the first.

making huge progress!!!

One thought... you may want to consider adding a strip of black RTV to the windshield surround. I used it on all the seals.

I was considering using the permitex version http://www.permatex.com/products/auto ... Silicone_Gasket_Maker.htm . Thanks for reading my mind. I will apply it tonight or tomorrow. Is the type you are suggesting?
