I'm looking to buy a OBD code reader for my 1999 NISSAN, 2002 FORD Truck and my 1994 Corvette. I know about reading the codes on my vette and have done that many times but would like the convenience of a device I can attach to the port. My NISSAN and FORD have no digital dash so I need something with a display.

My question is do I need a CAN capable reader? The OBD readers I see are cheaper without that logic.

Any advice is appreciated....

The 94 is OBDI, the others are OBDII so you will need a tool that will access both protocols, CAN capability should not be necessary.
Consider a scan tool rather than a code reader, in addition to codes it will display sensor values and is much more helpful for troubleshooting problems.
I have an AutoXray 6000 that will read OBDI and OBDII, not as good as the factory bidirectional tools but affordable.

I'm thinking about buying a Actron 9190. Do you have any intel on this hand held scan tool? It will read my OBD1 1994 Corvette and my newer vehicles as well.

I'm not familiar with the tool but just looked at the specs on their web site and it seems very capable of doing what you want.
Actron and AutoXray are actually different divisions of the same company by the way. My only suggestion would be to shop similar tools comparing price and features to get the best value for money spent. I believe Guru member JD'sWhite93 sells tools, it might be worthwhile to send him a PM.
If you chose the 9190 let me know how you like it.
