A rather boring honk, but it should be loud and clear.

It should work with key on or off....

I have been chashing a clicking noise in the rear end area somewhere.
Quickcat (don't know if he is over here) did a post about the teflon washers behind the rear spindles. Several chimed in and said that the washers stopped their noise. Good article by the way! Well it wasn't the washers. Replaced them yesterday. Did notice that the rear pads are down to about 25-30%. That is next. I had a new driveshaft and half shafts made with spicers not too long ago. I really don't want to pull the half shafts and drive shaft at this point. The car has just over 100,000 miles on it and has never been driven hard, so I really doubt the rear end is going. I just changed the rear fluids and put two bottles of additive in.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Sorry to hear that, I was
one of the ones who changed
the washers and got positive
results. Keep looking, you'll
find it. I had a noise in the
differential of my '98 GMC
4X4 that I chased for 4 years
before I finally found it.

My first suggestion is rust on the splines on the stub axle.

If you can, spray some PB Blaster inside the stub axle and see what happens.

Do I need to be concerned with it getting near the bearings?

you will use the straw and push it into the stub/bearing.
