ON A STOCK '87 SHOULD THE FAN COME ON WHEN THE AC IS TURNED ON OR SHOULD THERE BE A DELAY BEFORE THE FAN KICKS IN?

The fan should turn on with the ac. Fan is normally ECM (temp) controlled, but will be overridden by the pressure switch in the ac system.

WHERE IS THIS SWITCH LOCATED? IS IT PART OF THE COMPRESSOR?

Gris - I apologize. I misread your question so the above answer is not 100% correct.

The fan may be delayed coming on when the ac is turned on. The fan signal turns on when the high side pressure reaches 233 psi. So as the pressure climbs, the fan turns on to control it.

And to answer your second question, the switch is located in the ac lines.
