My Vette overheated the other day in traffic. Troubleshooting revealed the fan wasn't on so I unplugged the relay and jumpered the connection to get it home. Since then the fan comes on at strange times like right when I shut it off it comes on then off again. At what temp is the fan supposed to come on? I'm guessing around 170 but I just pulled in a minute ago, the temp was 203 and the fan was not on?

Without looking at the specific year, stock temp for the main fan is 228. The auxiliary fan is 235.
If you were able to jumper it, that means the fan is good. Does it turn on with the ac? You can also swap relays around to see if that works. |

Thanks. Appreciate your time. Didn't realize the setting was so high. Going out and buying a new relay.

modern engines are far better engineered to handle the heat. Metals are specified to expand and predictable rates so things all work properly at those heats.
It is also a factor of emissions. This is where the OEM has us beat, because they have access to all the test data to figure out optimum temperature settings. My 92 will get to 228, fans kick, goes down to 215. On the open highway, the temp stays at about 194, sometimes lower. My system is stock, except for a DeWitts radiator. |
