Well...say I put gas in my car and the little bars are up to the half way mark. Now if I start driving a bit, they might go down a bar or two, then if I coast for a while, they'll go up a few bars.
Is my reading suppose to change to match my driving habits? But the gas level in the tank doesn't change, so why does the readout? Shouldn't it be steady? |

The sending unit for you gas gauge is a very hitech device.
It consists of a float on a metal arm attached to a variable resistor. Your reading depends on the resistance at the time. They rust, get gunked by some fuels, and become erratic. Unfortunately, to replace it, you cant buy just the resistor. You must buy the whole tank spout and associated bits minus the fuel pump and strainer. The replacement is ridiculously expensive. There is a procedure for cleaning the variable resistor that sometimes works. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1574491 |
