That's a really good post. I was hoping it was just the way it was. Looks like I have a little project this weekend

Well...say I put gas in my car and the little bars are up to the half way mark. Now if I start driving a bit, they might go down a bar or two, then if I coast for a while, they'll go up a few bars.

Is my reading suppose to change to match my driving habits? But the gas level in the tank doesn't change, so why does the readout? Shouldn't it be steady?

Oh yeah, especially after I got the dash buttoned back up then realized my hood latch lever wasn't in the hole so I couldn't open it. Had to take the bottom part off again

Well...took half the dash out looking for any burnt or smoked wires and everything looked like it should. Checked the fuses and they were all ok (correct size too)

So I started the car and waited a bit to see if it would do it again. After a couple of minutes I started to smell it again, but this time I was outside of the car. So I got under the car and found a nice melted plastic bag.

Well, at least it wasn't anything major. :silent:

Ok well not quite, but there was quite a bit of smoke.

Here's the story:

I was waiting in line at the local fast food place and it was after work so the line was really long. Well...I idled for a little while, then realized the line wasn't moving so I shut my car off. Waited a little while then the line moved a bit, so I started my car, moved up, then shut it back down. I probably did this 3 times (drive thru's are hell). So anyway, by the time I got to the menu, I noticed a faint burning smell. Since I first noticed it when I rolled down my window to place my order, I figured it was just from the restaurant. So I make it through the line and get my stuff and I'm still smelling this burning smell. So I drove down the road a little ways with my window still rolled down (it felt good outside) and I'm still smelling it, so I thought maybe a house had caught on fire around there somewhere. Then I looked down, holy crap! I'm on fire!

I see smoke coming out from under the dash in the footwell kind of towards the left. I was just passing a gas station so I pulled into there since it was lit up and I tried to find the source of the smoke, but by the time I got to the station, it had seemed to have stopped. So I open the hood and everything seems ok under there, go back into the car and my temp gauges aren't showing anything funny, everything seems to still work. I sniffed around a little bit and it seems to have came from somewhere above the brake pedal.

Since it had seemed to stop, I drove home and it didn't have any problems the rest of the way.

So, my question is: Any ideas what that was? What could have caused it? Idled a long time and overheated something (even though the gauges didn't show anything?), starting and stopping the engine too frequently?

The A/C wasn't on so it wasn't running any of that and the heater wasn't on so it didn't heat anything up.

One good thing about tonight though was that the cute girl that brought my burger out to me said "You have a really nice car"

So if you read my little intro thing you might know I work at a grocery store. Well, this guy comes through my line and he gets the usual stuff, and he had a case of beer too. Since our screens pop up asking for the customer's birthday (to make sure they're old enough), if I know they're old enough, I usually mess with them and ask them "You sure you're old enough for this?" and usually we have a laugh and go on.

Well, today, I told it to this guy and he says:

Him: Yeah, I'm pretty sure. But it's not all bad being old....I get to drive a Corvette

Me: Oh really? Me too. (keep in mind I'm 19) It's that purple one outside, can't miss it.

Him: Yeah, I've seen it around a bit. Bet it doesn't have nitrous on it like mine does

Me: No but it does have heads, cam, bored and stroked, headers, ect ect....

Him: :sad7:

468ish here and it's really easy to drive for what it is. The bigger tires help in the rain but watch out if it downshifts! (just gotta watch what you're doing on a turn, little to no gas around curves)

I haven't had any problems with mine. Idles around 750 with the cam and I get around 18ish mpg mixed. Does great on the highway, hooked up Datamaster to it once and only takes 6% throttle to do 70mph

On the way home from school today my "Change Oil" light came on. The oil was just changed not even 800 miles ago so I know it's not old. Is this light a "timed" light or does something else set it off? How do I turn it off?

Sounds like you need to bleed them. If you have air in your brake fluid you will have longer pedal travel. It could be the booster, but that's less likely.

It should be easy to tell if you have the C5 brakes, post a picture of your calipers. Any number of us can tell you what it is.

I take it you bought the car with them already replaced?

Yeah, bleeding was the first thing on my list to do. And yes, the only thing I've done to this car so far is fixing the speakers in the back, changing an injector, and hard wired my police scanner. A lot of work as been done to it, and I got it for a really good price, but there are a lot of things on this car that just weren't put back right, so I'm going through the car and fixing it one by one.

I don't think I'm getting the full potential of my brakes. I know they've been upgraded and from that other thread, I'm starting to think they're C5 brakes. Anyway, the pedal seems really soft to me. In an emergency stop situation, the pedal goes all the way to the floor and will not lock the tires at even low speeds. ABS has never come on.

Sometimes in the wet, I have to basically floor the brake pedal to get even a normal stopping speed out of them. (read: not safe)

Any ideas?

It is supposed to be either under the plastic tray in the storage bin behind the passenger or inside the spare. I've seen them in both places.

BTW Is your tire tool behind the driver's seat

I don't have a storage compartment anymore, I assume there used to be a flap or something to get to it, but now it's just a piece of carpeted plywood that's screwed down to make a "floor" behind the seats. when I undid it to get to the speakers in the back, there wasn't anything back there but a few tools someone had left back there, random socket wrench and a screwdriver. No tire tool or jack. I checked one day just to see if I had a spare and I do have a full size spare back there, but nothing else. I keep my jumper cables in the hub of the spare though since I couldn't find anywhere else to keep them. Guess I don't have a jack or tire tool :sad7:

Great...now I'm going to look like a poon on the side of the road in my purple corvette using my cellphone to come pick my car up.

Dumb noob question, but I can't seem to find the jack for my car. Is it suppose to be around the spare tire? because it's not there. At least I didn't see it, where at?

No offense, but your car (if stock) isn't going to do 13.5 easily, maybe not until you get a little more wheel time.

Only money/time justified being spent on the car for you at this point is in making sure it's running properly and safe, which applies whether you're racing it or just letting your wife drive it to work.

Just to clarify, it's not stock, and I'm not married lol

At least with the Firebird I didn't have to worry about rules, it was too slow lol

I wouldn't be racing it in events or anything, just some fun runs down the track whenever I got the chance. I know for a convertible you have to have a rollbar for anything faster than a 13.5 (which i sure hope this thing will do lol) and possibly even a helmet. I just want to pass basic tech inspection and be able to make a full run down the 1/4 mile without worrying about running too fast to get kicked out.

Well, hey, update for you guys. Turns out, it was just the little piece that hold the throttle cable right before the actual throttle was bent down (my dad said someone might have just leaned on it at one point) so we bent it back and I'm back to WOT :thumbleft:

Okay, just hooked the laptop back up to it (actually sitting in my car right now on wireless lol) and here are my observations:

Pedal pressed down gives 75%, 3.08 volts.

Pedal is not being stopped by the floor or floormat, it's just at the end of it's travel

Manually turning the throttle will give a 100%, 4.00 volt reading.

I *looks* like the throttle cable maybe be a little bit too long, thus not pulling the throttle to wide open.

Any ideas? Where would the best place to adjust the length of cable be if possible? Thanks.

Im sure you did this allready, but with the key to ON and the engine not running, Datamaster connected and running, you should be able to see what voltage and percentage youre getting then.

Yeah, I'll try that tomorrow too. I know it gives you the percentage (that's why I started this lol), i'm pretty sure it shows voltage too so I'll make sure to pay attention to it this time.

That's because the OP had work all day

I'll have a chance to look at it tomorrow when I have a helping hand so I can look while someone pushes the pedal for me.

hm... the throttle cable could be out of wack... or the TPS is worn.

I need to get my 92 helm out to help you with that other code, so I will get it out to check these numbers.

Thanks a lot, from what I've seen from that AllData stuff my friend got for me, it's basically a lot of checking voltages at certain points...problem is, it doesn't tell you where those points are! lol

I'm hoping it's just a little out of wack and I still have another few horses that I haven't been using this whole time.

So I hooked up Datamasters to the Vette last night and used one of the free tunes and it gave a whole bunch of data (does anyone know if you have to purchase the program to be able to record data? I couldn't seem to get it to log any data)

Anyway, one thing I noticed was that when I floored the pedal, it was only showing up as 72-75% throttle and that if I basically stood on it, I could get it to go to 82%ish. So am I not really going WOT and just need to make an adjustment somewhere or would the people who built my car have done that for a reason? (Cammed, stroked, lots of other stuff, ect) Like getting too much fuel for the tune or something?

If I had some money to throw around, I'd get one of those and slap a sizeable motorcycle engine in it.

Yeah, that's the one everyone seems to use (and the only one I've gotten to work with my car so far).
Hella expensive though. <--Broke college kid

Looks like pretty slim pickings for most of our applications :sad7:

So I got me a shiny new ALDL cable for my laptop/Vette and I got it working with some cheapo freeware program. So that's cool. But now since I know it works, what kind of programs are out there that will read the information this thing is putting out?

Can I make changes to certain things (such as rev limiter or fuel cutoff) or would I need something more sophisticated for that?

Thanks to anyone who's used anything like this.

I got a friend that printed me out a few sheets on the code from something called "Alldata"? He works at a repair shop so I'm assuming that's what they use. It has a step by step check thing too so I'm going to try to give that a go when I get a chance, hopefully tomorrow.

If you got 3 dashes in 9.7, you cleared it. If you leave the paperclip in and turn the key off, then back on. You should see C-12 first, then it will cycle thru 1.0, 4.0 and 9.0, and should show 3 dashes at each one.

I don't think starting the car is necessary for this particular problem.
Unhooking the battery probably won't change anything but it's worth a shot.

Yeah, that's what I got. I just don't remember the lights going off. But maybe they did, i'll try again in a little bit

I have like a 4 website rotation:

Fullthrottlev6 (for my Firebird)
C4Guru (for the Vette)
Digg (for my tech/political news)
Email

Rinse and repeat. If nothing is updated, I'll go find something do for a few minutes, then come back lol

48k here

Daily driven. Had 46k when I bought it, and I plan on putting many more miles on this baby. Cars are meant to be driven!

Yep, youve gotta do all that, and id have to say, if the codes were cleared, when the vehicle is started the MIL lamps should all go out, including the ABS and ASR lamps until you reach the 3mph test, if they are not going out, id say youve got some sort of a short to ground in there, or other electrical issue.

Couple of things:

1) I'm aware of the fact that there are a number of things that could cause the code to be thrown, but if I know where to look for the "valve solenoid" then I could maybe trace down a faulty wire or bad ground somewhere.

2) Maybe I'm not erasing the code the right way. I'm pretty sure I went to 9.7, got it to show three dashes, but then I turned the car off and pulled the paperclip out. Should I start the car after getting the dashes? Or what do you mean but "other electrical issue"?

On the 92, almost everything will show up as an "H" except tha C12 (no codes). I think this happens when you shut off the key and any codes get stored.

In module 9, the H63 is Valve Solenoid Relay Fault ( Valve Solenoid Circuit Error on Andy's sheet, same thing).
Yep, looks like that will trigger the ASR/ABS lites.
When the ign is on, this realy provides voltage to activete the solenoids and provides a ground path for the "service abs" lamp.
Service ABS and service ASR lites will be on and a code 63 will be set when the Valve Solenoid relay voltage falls to less that 5 volts.

I'd first try and reset that code, go to 9.7 to reset, and see if it comes back and the lites go out.

If not, BURN the Chilton. The diagnosis is on page 5E1-82 in the real manual.

BTW, I want your wheels for my Black Rose.

Thanks for the info. Like I said, I'm pretty sure I deleted the code the first time around, and the lights never went off. When I did the check again, the code either came back or was still there. Where is this Valve Solenoid at if I need to change it?

I haven't got into this yet, my car has been great and hasn't even shown a check engine light yet. But, (on an '89) what software and cable would be best for me should I want to check for codes and look to see if i'm getting any knock counts and such?? What all can I look at? I have pcmforless do the tune and I don't think I want to get into making my own tunes, but it would be nice to see how well it is working and if I need to send it in for an adjustment or not.

Not trying to thread steal, just thought this info would be best added to this thread instead of having a whole separate one. Keeping good info on a subject gathered together somewhat.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing too

I had one built from a schematic I found online.

If you're not electrically inclined I can send you mine...assuming I can find it. Mine's for an LT1 car, I think they were pinned a little differently back in the 80's. I know it will work with a '92 up to when they went OBD-II, in '95, right?

What kind did you have? USB or serial?

why buy one when you can build your own for a few bucks.

That's for serial, my laptop doesn't have that :sad7:

I can't say I'm *using* any software, since I don't have a cable to actual have used it yet lol. But, I downloaded a few programs that claim to be PC based scan tools and real time data loggers and I wanted a cable to try them out

I got them from this site: http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/pages.asp?pageid=20

One question I had was I know the H means it's an "old" code. I was pretty sure I cleared it, drove around the block, and when I tried it again, it still showed up as an old code.

My Chilton's manual says "Code 63 - Oxygen Sensor (OS2), right side circuit open or Cruise system problem (speed error) or Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor circuit out of range"
