A friend suggested doing the pump while I have the oil pan off. Is this a good idea? How robust are the pumps? The pressure on my car is good. I'm not in a hurry to burn money, but if it's a good idea, I'll bite the bullet.

No reason, IMO. Depending upon mileage, I'd freshen the bearings before I'd worry about the pump. A good pump in a well maintained engine will very likely outlast the engine. There's really not much in a pump to fail. They're usually damaged by oil starvation, major contaminants in the oiling system, etc.
