Got the calm before the storm here in Ohio. Tomorrow, freezing rain, turning to rain, turning to snow. I live close enough to lake Erie that I can "enjoy" lake effect snow!

Saw them do a clutch on a 2001 C5 on Wheeler Dealers. Holy cow! I had no idea it was such a mess. Maybe an auto C5 is a better way to go?

That stinks to get laid off. I'm at the other end of the career journey, I want to get laid off with a severance, and they won't do it.

Good luck Andy.

I see the cgs have dwindled in numbers. Only a couple forums get posts. Just noticing, I've been lurking more lately.

Stuck in Ohio, 19F this morning, 48F today, rain and 63F on Saturday, back down to low 30s on Sunday. This has been a screwy winter, but, not much snow, that's a good thing.

Oh, and I noticed Tommy is worried about taking VA benefits? You served, take them. If you don't take them, there's no assurance someone else will get them. You served, most didn't, take what you're entitled to take.

Hi! Yeah, I'm heading toward retirement most likely in 2020. So I'll need something to fill my time.

Hi all. Been a while since I've been around. Still Corvette-less. Very close to retirement, and toying with the idea of changing the Corvette status. Hope you all had a great Christmas. Mine was outstanding.

I love the Lingenfelter, but that's a bit out of my range.
Very nice car though.

Getting in and out of a C5 or 6 is much easier for old guys like me.....

I'm actually very open minded about this, and not in a big hurry. Things have changed, I'm an old guy too, and I don't really want a 6 speed. My left knee is a bit creaky. I've owned an early C4, and driven both late C4s and C5s. The late C4s feel like an early C4 that went to finishing school. A bit more manners. The C5 is totally different. The C5 feels more like my Acura TL, until you step on it.

I saw a 97 that looked pretty good, for a fair price, so that's why I came here.

Early C4s are out. So, if I see a 95-96, or a C5 and it's the right car/mileage/price, I'll know.

I just watched my buddy dyno his 07 Mustang GT. Turns out the dyno is run by the Ohio branch of PCMForless. (Alvin is in NC). Anyway, it was a blast. The car puts down 306 to the rear wheels, my buddy has done some nice things to it.

So... I've gotten past some "events" and I'm getting itchy again. I look at cars for sale, and I admit to a fondness for the C4, since my first Vette was an 87. I focus on 95 and 96, and there are some nice ones, with prices that vary widely, but that's no shock.

The C5s have an even bigger range, but there are some decent deals. Especially the 97 and 98 models.

That brings me to the question I have. Which car is a better bang for the buck? I know they're quite different, and I know a C5 has much more in the way of bolt ons. But, a C4 has a look and charm to it. In Ohio:

95-96 around 50k miles prices around $12k
97-98 around 50k miles prices around $17k

One other option for me is to just hang on a little longer and get a newer C5, say 00-01.

What do you think?

I looked at 20+ C4's, drove 150 miles and trailered it hole in a U-Haul. Best thing I ever did was to insoect all those cars and wait for the right one no matter where it was.

I looked on AutoTrader in 44221, the prices there are $4 to $5k higher (C5) than some other places.

Thanks Bill.
Do you think the prime places to find a C5 are warm weather states?

Also, be damned sure you get what you want. You were blinded by a nice looker last time... and that's fine, but you found out it wasn't what you REALLY wanted... considering you went in looking for a 92+ with 6spd, and ended up with an 87 A4. That's pretty different. Please, don't make that mistake again... if only for your own sanity.

Thanks Andy.

I actually started looking 92, but I got spooked by the opti-spark, and decided that an L98 would be a nice reliable choice. The only thing I got right is that an a4 is better than a 4+3. Wrong and wrong. Live and learn.

What got me most last time was I just had the fevor. I wanted it, and wanted it now. I'm a lot more deliberate this time.

I wouldn't rule out a c4, but most guys want c5 money for their c4. If I can get a decent mid mileage c5 for $16k, why would I spend $14k on a high mileage c4?

Mustangs intrigue me. There are lots of them out there. My buddy has an 07 GT and it's a pretty darn nice car.

I am looking close to home, but I'm not beating the bushes. I'm just casually looking at what pops up.

I have looked at the car and it is really clean. Only drawback is the automatic.

The midnight blue is really sharp.

Car has had 4 owners, started life as a fleet vehicle in Ohio, sold and went to Georgia, then I believe to PA and now is back in Ohio.

See, that's what I'm talking about. 99 Vette with 73k miles for $16k. That's about what people are asking for a similar 95-96 Vette. I don't understand that.

I will have to take a look at that one this weekend.
BTW, that's the color scheme of my Acura TL.

Thanks.

To me there is little comparison. Two seats vs four. ... What about a Camaro? That's more comparable.

Both are fun, and no doubt a Mustang isn't going to do what a Corvette can in the turns. Straight line would be much closer. Mustangs are surprisingly sleek. About 3500lbs. My 87 C4 was about 3250lbs.

Haven't looked at the Camaro. A new one is out, not a fan of the new style, sorry, it's just me. If I want a Challenger, I'll buy one. The early 2000s Camaro, I haven't really looked for any. Might do that. No rush.

Thanks.

Gorgeous car. Those were the days when cars were as much art as they were function.

Today's cars are largely utilitarian.

Congrats.

When it comes right down to it, I am Mustang neutral, really. I like some, don't like others. It's all rather vague...

I've always been a "GM guy", until the recent meltdown of GM, how they handled the Impala owners, etc. Through that crisis I admired how Ford handled themselves. I know that has nothing to do with the cars in question, it just makes me accept Fords more now.

I've been looking at late C4s, and early C5s. I've noticed that the C5 owners are more in the mode of seeing their cars as just cars. Where the C4 owners think they have collector's items, (in general). The C5s seem to be a better value.

I'm thinking about buying a new toy this spring. I'm looking around $15k, with some flex if needed. Anyway, I've noticed something. A used Mustang is much cheaper than a used Corvette of similar capabilities. Before you beat me up... I know, a Corvette costs more when new. A Mustang isn't as capable in terms of handling. I get it.

But for an old fart like me, who likes to drive fast on occasion, but I'm not a racer, there seems to be more bang for the buck. People who are trying to sell Corvettes seem to be very proud of what they have.

I guess I'm looking for input. I know there's something special about a Corvette that a Mustang doesn't have. But I can get a low mile, v8 Mustang GT vert with 45k for $13k, (or less).

The biggest problem is that the people who are elected, have no incentive to downsize government. Why would they want to cut their own throat? When the 537 elites are fearful that the electorate is physically coming after them with pitchforks and torches, then it will change. Until then, business as usual.

I don't like Obama, never did. He's a Marxist, like it or not. He wasn't vetted, pun intended, by the media. The content of his books, the lack of public availability of his college transcripts, his self admitted animosity towards his mother's race, and his self admitted pot and cocaine use. His father's politics, the politics, (communist), of his mentor Frank Marshall Davis. How does a poor black kid go to Harvard? His exposure to Black Liberation Theology.

I think Obama understands little to nothing about economics.

I honestly believe Obama doesn't like America as it is constituted, and has no admiration for anything in America's past. I further believe Obama would be content to "break it" in order to "fix it".

Ron Paul is a foreign policy nightmare. He's the only one that would make me vote Obama, or stay home.

I'd vote for any other Republican, the likely candidates are Santorum or Romney. I have strong reservations about both of those clowns, but I think either would do better on the economy than the current president who is quite comfortable leading from behind.

I emailed the reseller. He said I'd have the item by Christmas. I said, great, do you have a website, I'll order from you direct next time. His answer: No, but if I ever get one, I'll let you know.

Really? I mean, a website isn't like building a store. Oh well, I still consider it a lesson learned. And even if the stuff comes on time, I'm not at all happy with Amazon's lack of interest.

I've bought a lot of stuff from them, now it will be a lot less.

That appeals to me. Use Amazon, then cut them out of their piece of the action.

It's just stuff. I'd like to have it in time, but no damage if it gets here on the 27th.

I've learned a lesson. If it's not from Amazon's warehouse, I'll google and buy it elsewhere.

It's good to know and share such things.

I've bought from sellers on Amazon. I've never had an issue like this. I guess the time constraint and paying extra for nothing is the issue. That, and Amazon's seeming lack of interest in my transaction with the seller. I'll have a great Christmas if it gets here, or it doesn't. I'm just annoyed by how it all transpired and thought it would be useful to share.

I just sent an email to the seller.

My mistake then. The implication is Amazon represents these resellers. Much like Sears selling DeWalt tools. If your DeWalt drill is defective on delivery, you take it back to Sears. Not only that, I paid extra for expedited delivery. Amazon gets a piece of that action.

I see that it's to my benefit to just google and pick a place, or use price grabber or some such. There is no value add in Amazon's value add.

I wanted an item for Christmas. I went to Amazon today. The item is a hard to find thing, (just got my son's list). Amazon had it from a seller. I bought it with 3-6 day expedited delivery.

Today is December 14. With the extra I paid for shipping, they say they'll deliver it between 12/19 and 12/27! So, I contact Amazon, which isn't easy, eventually I went to chat with a "customer service" person online. Amazon can't and won't stand by a reseller. The bottom line was, sorry about your luck.

So, I asked how to contact someone at Amazon who cares that I won't be shopping there anymore. They gave me a mailing address. No email, no phone numbers.

I won't be shopping at Amazon anymore, and I told them I'd share my experience everywhere I go online. Buyer beware.

I don't know if 98 had hud, but this one doesn't have it. It's a basic vert, which is a nicely optioned car.

I haven't seen the car in person, but the owner has said he'll take $13.9k and it has a clean carfax. I suspect that if I look and like it, he'd take $13.5k. But I don't want to jump on a deal because it's a deal. I did that last time and regretted it. I want to get opinions here, and then investigate.

Hi guys, I lurk, but don't post much anymore. Didn't want to start a new thread, I was looking at spring to get back in the game, but stumbled on this:

http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/cto/2680790608.html

98 vert, 75xxx miles. Clean carfax. I can get the car for significantly less than $15.3k.

Should I wait for a 2000+? I know they're better.
Also, is 75k miles a lot for a C5?

Thanks.

Yep, they're out there. A Shelby GT350.

Resized Image

They say one manÂ’s trash is another manÂ’s treasure. This case appears to be treasure beneath trash. This 1966 Shelby Ford Mustang GT350 was stored away in a shed beneath a pile of junk. Here is how it became uncovered.

In 1966, Shelby American resold some aftermarket V8 Ford Mustangs with some performance enhancements and racing improvements. They built 2,378 and sold 1,003 to Hertz to be rented out for racing. Most of these were painted gold and black, but a handful were painted red like this one that was tracked back to a Hertz office in Georgia a few decades ago.

Hertz rented the car for about a year before selling the car in October of 1967 to a lady named Anbeth Youngquist from Miami. Her daughter, Gail Youngquist, registered the car with the Shelby Owners of America club while she was living in Kansas, and on June 27, 1976, a Conoco station changed its oil with documentation that states 87,370 miles on the odometer. After that, the story gets blurry.

My wife bought an 08 new from the dealer. She loves it. It's been a good car. It's actually a rebadged Mazada Tribute.

Two suggestions:
Go with the 6 cylinder. The 4 is great for around town, but if you go on a trip, and go through the mountains in Virginia, it struggles. The gas mileage isn't that much different, if she had it to do over, she'd get the 6. But the 4 isn't bad.

Get the leather seats. I don't know what Ford/Mazda was thinking, but the cloth seats stain if you look at them too long. Seriously, water will stain the cloth seats.

Other than that, it's a good car, I like driving it.

The root cause is the debt, and the deficit. There are lots of reasons it's bad, from being mortgaged to potentially unfriendly nations, as you pointed out, to the huge amount of income, that is, taxes, needed simply to service the debt. The fixes aren't simple, in some cases painful, but not rocket science. Cut foriegn aid. Cut military spending. Draw down Iraq and Afghanistan. Cut entitlement programs. Reduce regulations, (it costs money to enforce all the stupid regulations we have). Eliminate Federal oversight departments, for example, does the Department of Education really do anything that can't be done, or isn't done on a state level? Means testing for SSI... etc.

The thing that blocks any progress or an attempt at fixing the problem is self interested politicians. Of the 535 members of congress, 535 have one thing as their number one goal, to remain one of the 535 members of congress. Spending tax dollars buys influence which gets them votes. Additionally, look at the list of cuts, everyone will find something objectionable there. A Congress that takes on things on that list will be rewarded by being booted out of office. The average American isn't well informed, and when a cut touches them, they'll reflexively vote for someone else. Look at what happened in 2010.

I think this is a case where nothing will be done until we crash, and crash hard.

We wouldn't even have to go that far. All it would take is to get them all together, House and Senate, and tell them, for every week you don't get the budget balanced, your pay is reduced $10k. It would be done in a week.

Your solution is much like tying a CEO's compensation to how the company performs. It's logical, and it's right, but those that make the rules, are the ones from benefit from the system being broken.

To a politician, money is power, and power is required for re-election. We have failed as a society. We have produced a political class that has few, if any, members that have a desire to do the right thing because it's the right thing. It's all about self interest with the political class. That's why you see party jumpers. People with no real political philosophy, just a desire to keep their cushy job regardless of the tag you hang on them.

We are so hosed.

I've read where the protesters have been very anti American.

I don't understand, isn't our current president the one we've all been waiting for? I thought everyone loved us now, and that he'd heal the earth?

I'm just sayin'.

My son has an 04 Maxima. I drive an 08 Acura TL. I agree with you, that heated steering wheel is incredible. I don't like wearing gloves, and if I'd have found the right Maxima when I was looking, I'd have bought it over the TL, just for the heated wheel!!

My son drove the TL and said it's the bizzaro version of the Maxima. Sport coupe feel, but the TL is a little more closed in. The TL has good low end acceleration, but at highway speeds, only ok. The Maxima, has ok low end acceleration, but will really go at higher speeds.

I am in the age group that laughed when the parents complained about long hair, bad music, declining morals, etc.

I submit that a huge part of the mess this country is in, is a direct result of former "hippies" getting their hands on the levers of power.

Sometimes dismissing things as trivial can come back to bite you.

The guys I take my cars to, love the BMWs, but they're rear drive and very pricey to repair.

I mentioned the CTS, they liked it, but said there's a computer module for everything on those cars. Again, pricey to maintain.

I went with the Acura TL. Nice feel, but it doesn't feel like a big car. If you want a big car feel, not sure what I'd suggest.

From the beginning of the article:

"Companies are grudgingly starting to hire back a few of the unemployed. "

It's what's known as yellow journalism, or spin. The choice of words makes it sound as if companies have hoards of unfilled jobs, that they are jealously keeping unfilled for their own purposes.

The reality is, the economy isn't robust enough to create demand enough to cause businesses to hire to fill a need. And in areas where demand is improving, businesses are slow to hire due to the uncertainty of what it will cost to hire an employee, (taxes and healthcare).

I stopped there.

Thanks Bill.

Yeah, I've become aware that the 97-99 Vettes are much like the early C4s in terms of needing care and having bugs. I think for my price, a 2000-2001 should be possible.

Since I got rid of the 87, my wife has asked me many times if I'm looking at Corvettes online. So, I finally asked her point blank, do you want me to get another? In her usual non comittal way, she says: "Sure, if you want." That's wife speak for yes. To be honest, I'm not sure if she wants me to get another because it keeps me out of other forms of trouble, of if she just likes the Vettes, (she prefers Mustangs, so it's not just Corvettes).

I'm not in a position to buy for a number of reasons, a wedding in June, (my daughter's), would be the prime reason. But, a year from this spring, God willing, I could see being in position to get another. Since this is "off season", and there isn't much to talk about anyway, I thought I'd post this up.

I'm a non mechanic, probably going to be looking to spend $15k - $20k, (less is better, but I don't want to repeat past mistakes). It's good to watch the market, keep current, know what's out there. Would you guys suggest a clean 96, or a 2000-2001 somewhere in that range?

I like the C4. I like driving something that's a little more unique than the C5 that everyone has. But, I don't have a lot of fault tolerance. I want a car that with the right maintenance can be trusted.

Interested in your thoughts.
