I think I have a blown tweeter in my speaker. It's a Cerwin-Vega E-712 (home audio).

Can I test it with a multimeter?

Thanks...

I dunno about testing a tweeter, as all VC testing I have done involves physically moving the cone while having the meter attached to the poles.

it takes a lot of work to blow up a speaker driver.

A DVM will test if you have a breach in the internal circuit tho... expect a nominal 4 to 8 ohms. It depends on the loading of the crossover to know how they make the 8 ohms reconcile with the rest of the system.

If it is a standard tweeter with a voice coil it can be definitely measured. But you have to get inside the box and go directly on the tweeter and bypass all the crossover capacitors. It would also be best to disconnect the speaker so there is no chance of measuring any parallel path and also listen for any pop or sound it will make.

If it measures the required value and it make noise as you measure it, it is basically good not blown. Sound quality is a different story however you would have to drive it with a separate source to evaluate it.

If your having a problem with the highs coming from the speaker box, I would check out the capacitors in the crossover network, any loose connections, or the adjustment circuit that controls the amount of highs coming out of the speaker box.

That's exactly what the guy at MCM electronics said - somethin' about a gig that generates x watts/meter/squared units.

I'm just browsin' the catalogue that they sent - tons of electronics goodies, including car tech diag's toys too. Low end, high end, ...

I don't know what specs I need to replace tweeters tho', besides physical dimensions. Tweeters go from $3 - $65, and I gotta' have good sound in the house.
