I've heard mentioned "short" water pumps and "long" water pumps when people talk about SBC engines. Are the L98 water pjmps the "short" ones or the "long" ones. They are the only ones I've ever seen so I don't know what any others look like for comparison purposes.

You have a short, reverse rotation pump.

The C4 has neither, but that's another story.

It's short..er..

When you wan to run an aftermarket alt bracket or tensioner that's when all sorts of things become fun since the C4 L98 water pump is neither "short" nor "long".

http://www.stewartcomponents.net/Merc ... 403&Category_Code=ChevyS1

Stewart says the length is 5.795", same as the short pump for 71-82 Corvettes.

But it looks like the generic short pump is 5.625"

Long is 6.932"

On that note, I recall there being a ~1/4" spacer behind the pulley too, but it's been awhile since I had it off.

Well.....I see (thinking way longterm and maybe just dreaming here) that you can get a magnacharger with the mp112 supercharger for the sbc with long water pump. I haven't called them or anything so I don't know if you can get one for our L98 based setup but was dreaming of putting one on my car maybe next winter or the winter after. No budget left at this point, and I would want to put a season in on the new build before trying something different. I have always wanted a blower and a small shot of nitrous though, now I have a bottom end that can handle it.

Way too many issues and not enough budget to mess with it now. But it seems that it could be done fairly easily, if I could get it in the right length. Would need a newer Camaro throttle body, new induction piping, some throttle cable work, probably a water/meth system, and likely a hood scoop. Probably need some serious tuning, or run with an FMU. Might need a headgasket change to lower the compression ratio too, as I'm at 10.7:1 and would want to run about 10 psi, I think. I'm sure other things would be needed too but it does seem doable. Again, just dreaming here at this point. I also always wondered what was long and what was short when it came to water pumps since I hear it alot. Thanks guys!

I went through this in august when I was fabricating an alternator bracket. I couldn't buy one off the shelf because the C4 wasn't long or short. Kinda lame.

I can't remember who, but one of you guys had a cool picture sent to me of a C4 L98, short SBC, and long SBC all sitting on a table with the three different pully depths.

All the "short" brackets wanted to run the alt on the left side, but needed shimming I think.

All the "Long" brackets that ran the alt on the right side needed to be cut down as the pulley was too far out.

The early corvettes may be weird too. All I know is, C4's are a pain to modify.

My understanding is that if you can fit your hand in the space behind the water pump, you have a "long" pump.
