Just kidding... heck, if it was just -5*, I'd be in winter storage.

Why's your car in storage? It's been 80+ degrees the past couple of days...

In the short term, I need to drop the original engine back in, then time permitting, I plan to wash and wax the car before cruising season.

Well, my Sunday is winding down. I was planning to drop the engine back in the 62 this weekend, but managed not to.

Met with bogus and Cuisinartvette earlier today at Long Beach. It was good to see some familiar faces. Scored a set of correct GM BBC SWP pulleys for the Chevelle, and some misc stuff I really didn't need.

Ran into the guy that rebuilt my #7380 Rochester FI long before I ever had it, and was quoted a reasonable price to have it gone through. Then I spoke with the guys at Bowtie Overdrives, and they were fairly certain they could make a 700R4 work with it, so it may eventually find its way into the 62.

From there, I went to Pacific Palisades to check out a 64 El Camino, it was a pos and about 180* opposite of how it was described... unfortunately, I'm not surprised that a seller would misrepresent something so flagrantly.

Bogus, glad you're going to make it. Do you still have my cell # ?

Regarding your problem, did any of you ECU connectors exhibit corosion? I know the early cars are different, but the wire harnes that bolts to the backside of the fuse panel (at the firewall) will cause intermittent starting and running issues as they corrode...

bogus, Mei, Reb and I are planning to be there around 7:30. I just spoke with Ron, and he's going to be going as well.

Are you gonna be able to make it?

Not a problem, but Bogus is much closer and has nicer digs.

BTW, I need a ride there.
If I take my truck, it only seats 3, and they'll be full. Cuisinartvette is car pooling, give him a call.

And can I borrow your car tomorrow?
It's on stands, with the engine out. How long do you need it?

Is this beer yours or can I have a few?
Have plenty of PBR. Some of it's cold. Help yourself, but the PBR long necks are hands-off, they're too damn hard to find.

Also regarding the wife, can I...
You know, you're not the first to ask, but I'm gonna have to say no...

Ron, I plan to pick Reb up around 6:30 or 7:00. His mother lives off of Lankershim, near the 5. Mei will probably be going too. Let's talk Saturday AM. I'll be taking the in-laws to the airport tonight, and won't be able to talk too long.

I'd like to head down early, and I don't mind leaving from the swap meet early.

Ron, I don't mind riding together, but I need to pick my son up from his mother first. What time are you planning to leave your place?

Well, today is going to be a long day, but it will be worth it. My in-laws are leaving after being here for a month. The sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and their two sons will be leaving this evening. Their daughter has been living with us to go to school already.

I'm not gonna lie, it's been a rough 4 weeks, and they've really tried my patience. It started when they interjected themselves in to my planned family vacation, a drive from L.A. to K.C. and back to visit my family and friends. I tried my best to convince them to find something else to do while we were gone. I offered them my home, cars, and even got them a pretty damn nice vehicle from work... but no, it wasn't enough for them...

They wanted me to be their chauffeur, lackey, and personal tour guide. Heck when they asked if I would rather they didn't go with us, I answered yes. I do not know how I could have been more clear. I would not force my self on anyone, yet they had no problem doing it to me. Nonetheless, they had no problem forcing themselves upon us. Pretty much ruined my vacation and, I can honestly say, I dislike them... a lot.

The wife asked me last night to go talk to them. She said they thought I was angry with them. I told her I was. She wanted me to tell them they were welcome in my house any time. I told her they were not. That boat has sailed.

Anyway, they are gone tonight. I will drive their luggage to the airport in my truck, then I'm done.

As long as the hydraulic jack on the cherry picker doesn't fail, I should be able to avoid any serious carnage...

That said, it's a lot easier to remove and install engines in the Vette, than in the Chevelle or my truck. Everything is easily accesible, and you don't need a stool to reach over the fender (like the truck)...

Brian, with the upper radiator hose removed and the top half of the fan shroud removed, you can leave the fan in place. The C1s are probably the easiest cars I've ever pulled engines out of. You can even get all 6 trans bolts from the top.

Part of the arrangement my wife and I have is that if she wants to drive the car, and wants me to keep it streetable, she has to help wrench on it. She's pretty good helping pull the engines and getting them lowered back in place.

Danspeed1, my toys are all pretty rough around the edges, but the wife is A-OK!

Danspeed1, the bule car is my 59. It's going to be off the road for a while.

Blade_1, the middle car is my 65 Chevelle. I still need to get the brake lights and turn signals working. Then I can start driving it around.
It's wearing Camaro wheels, because I put the Chevelle's wheels on the 62 Vette... the Vette's stock wheels cleared the front Calipers, but not the rear.

Cuisinartvette, if that thing I have pending works out, either the Chevelle or the blue Vette will be going...

matatk, the wife helps a lot with the car. She's quite skilled with the cherry picker, will crawl under the car and work the jack (under the trans) when I'm re-installing engines, and she can do basic remove and replace parts operations... which is more than 1/2 the people over at CF C1/C2 can do... then again, we're just drivers, not enthusiasts, with no no appreciation for the car's heritage, and no understanding of what owning a classic Corvette is all about...

TommyT-Bone, it's situational. If I wanted to spend the day working on the Chevelle or truck (other than necessary maintenance), the wife might throw up static. However, when it comes to the 62, I usually get a pass, and occasionally some assistance, because she drives it...

I spent more time avoiding the work than I actually spent working. All in all, it took about an hour and a half to remove my truck's old engine from the 62. I spent about an hour BSing with a friend who stopped by while I was working, and another hour or so cleaning and re-painting an engine mount and some misc brackets.

Out with the old

While not exactly on par with the OP's question, the reason I'm hesitant to add FI to one of my cars is because by the time I'm done with the nickels and dime stuff, I could have purchased a used late model engine... I've kicked around the ideas of adding a miniram, First TPI, etc...

I would think the OP could probably find a LS2 and swap it for not much more than the $4K quoted above.

Brian, the old engine was a 383, not a 283... 350 engine with a .030" over bore and a 3.75" stroke. The engine was built for a truck, with making torque and drivability the focal points... it was a fun driver, and even managed to thoroughly trounce a gold chainer in a new SRT8 Dodge at the track.

The new engine has 12 more cubic inches, quite a bit more cam, and a 195 CC head (the Dart 180 CC heads measured 191 cc FWIW), and a high rise single plane.

The engine that is going back in went 12.79 @ 108.XX with the single plane intake, a re-grind flat tappet cam, and the original 1962 Camel Hump heads...

If I don't blow the rear or tweak the driveshaft, the new combo should pick the car up quite a bit.

Danspeed1, the engine I'm removing is the old 383 from my truck. I gave it new rings and bearings, an Engle HR cam (224/232 @ .050", on a 112* ls), 180 CC Dart Pro 1 Platinum heads, and an old school Edelbrock C3B intake. I installed it in November, got it running on 11/19 and raced it at Famoso on 11/22. It went 12.64 @ 107.97 it's first pass at Famoso. It went on the chassis dyno two weeks later. It has less than 400 miles on it, and 250 of them were hen I drove it to Famoso and back.

The original 327 will be going back in. It has been upgraded with a 3.85" crank, a Comp 282 HR cam (230/236 on a 112* LS), AFR 195 heads, and a Team G intake. The stock heads are in the garage with the stock intake, ex manifolds, and carb.

pianoguy, isn't that the truth...

I suspect once the work is done, I'll be happy with the new combo. It should put me deep into the 12s, knocking on the 11s...

I've been putting it off. To be honest, it's not tough to swap engines on the 62, but I have no desire to do so. I'd rather be wrnching on the Chevelle.

The car is running good, throttle response is crisp, and it's fun to drive around town. I'm sure the 446 ft pounds of torque at the wheels at 2700 RPM has something to do with it.

Regardless, the die has been cast, and it will be done. The plan is to pull the engine, change pan gaskets on the engine going back in, and swap over the necessary components, and time permitting, bolt the original engine back in place.

Cover me, I'm going in...

pianoguy, crash, thanks for the PS tips. I'm going to get a shorter belt today and give it a try.

The 64s and 65s are my favorites, with 65 being my favorite among the two. They are fairly light, ride and handle well. Unfortunately, you can't get much tire under them. One other problem, is that the car being a convertible; you're not able to go fast at the track. Kind of defeats the purpose of having an old car.

matatk, the Torque Thrust D rims on the 62 were pilfered from the Chevelle. When I added rear disc to the 62, the calipers hit the stock rims. So, I swiped the wheels from the Chevelle. The Camaro wheels were relatively cheap and cleared the discs on the Chevelle rear end...

If I ever paint the 62, once I get it all cherried out, I'm going to run the Camaro rims on it, just to annoy the other Vette owners at the cruise nights.

Ron, I'd be interested in the rallys. I'm not sure if a 15X8 will fit the back, though... worth a shot. Any intereest in that LT1 intake?

Took the Chevell a few blocks, but didn't get it up to speed. Felt like the trans was slipping a little. May be low on fluid. I'm going to re-install the rear bumber and hood tomorrow, and try to fix the brake lights and turn signals. From there, I plan to use up the old gas, re-fill it, and go back throught the tune.

The engine has a Comp LS6 Nostalgia Plus cam. It drives great, but the cam is a little lumpier than I like. Unfortunately, the engine has a calculated 10.2:1 compression, and I can't really swap to a milder cam.

The 3.0" exhaust, even with the X pipe, is just a bit much, but would probably be livable with a milder engine.

Dan, generally speaking, the wife approves of just about everything I do for the 62, as long as it doesn't affect the drivability.

However, when I want to do something to the truck or the Chevelle, that's when she starts to raise an eyebrow. She enjoys driving the Vette (and I'm sure the attention it garners has something to do with it), and thus Vette repairs/maintenance/upgrades are a priority.

Unfortuantely, the truck and Chevelle get the short end of the stick. The truck was my DD until gas prices went way-up. Since then, I've been driving the wifes old Tercel, which now has 209K miles...

Andy,

It was one of the nicest driving cars I ever owned. I'm not sure what the future holds for it, but I tempted to pull the BB and put a milder engine in, possibly my trucks old 383, or a LSx and make it a daily driver again... I'm thinking that if I can get the wife driving the Chevelle again, maybe I can start having some fun with the 62...

BTW, I'm about to put a belt on the PS pump for the first time. Are you aware of any bleeding procedures that need to be followed?

Fired up the 65 for the first time in almost a year. I haven't really driven the car in the past 4-5 years, because I've let other vehicles take priority, and the 62 has been using the Chevelle's carb for the past couple of years. It has a mild 496, a TH350, 11" Holeshot converter, 12 bolt posi, 4WPDB, QR PS, and a fresh suspension rebuild.

I did the work 4-5 years ago, but have put less than 200 miles on the car since. I got the engine running good, and I got the tail lights working, but have no brake lights or turn signals (flashers???). I'm going to drive it around the block a few times when the wife gets home. I plan to start sorting the car out once I get the stroked 327 back in the C1.

I can't wait to start driving it again...

Not saying the builder didn't do a good job on it, but I personally do not care for the lowering job, tube grill, missing emblems, aftermarlet body side molding, the rims, and the non-GM red color... but that's just my opinion, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that I would be in the minority...

Interested in a '69 Stepside? I think I want to sell mine. It's a driver, not pristine, but there's no surprises. What sort of condition are you looking for?

Central Coater, I'd be interested in a short bed fleetside, but the step sides never done anything for me. There was a 72 Blazer priced right, body looked OK, but needing some work,... said it wouldn't idle in gear.

I think I'm going to call on the 65 El Camino first, because I have a lot of stuff left over from my 65 Chevelle. The 72 Short bed fleet side was in fair condition and had a 383. I'll probably call on it too.

Well, I need to be productive today, but can't get motivated. I'm leaning towards putting the carb back on the Chevelle and firing it up. If that goes well, trying to sort out the rear brake light/turn signal issue. Or, I could begin pulling the truck's 383 back out out of the 62 so I can install the recently dyno'd stroked 327.

I dunno. Both seem like a lot of work. I did just get off Craigslist and there are a couple 69-72 Blazers I would like to check out, along with a 72 short bed, and a 1965 El Camino. Problem is I friggin hate talkin to sellers and dealing with them after I drove out to see a car that wasn't as described. Maybe I'll just sit around and surf the net...

Taken yesterday on 1-1-09.

I meant I didn't want my Avatar to bring down yours, or Jeff' s either.

I hope people can exercise some restraint. I'm enjoying the freedom we have now, and would hate to see it go. Hot chick Friday would also be sorely missed...

I pan fried about 1 1/2 pounds of rib chuck. Rubbed it down with sea salt and olive oil. Eating it with an Armenian flat bread... pretty damn good!

Ron, I know it was hard, but I think you made the right decision.

Now that the Z is gone, what are we gonna talk about when you call? BTW, I'm thinking about pulling the 383 this weekend and re-installing the 327. Stop by if you feel like spinning some wrenches. Oh, and bring your Sawzall in case the '62 starts acting up.

Right now Im working on the Z doing some improvements for him to complete the sale. Ill have the 67 up and running by Feb no matter what. Just in time for some spring track runs, plenty to talk about. See whats going on this weekend.

Sounds good Ron. Let me know if you can stop by.

My engine compartment needs some work. It was detailed about 5 engine swaps ago, but I haven't kept-up on it. This pic is from last month when I replaced the #s matching 327 with my trucks 383... didn't even bother to wipe the air cleaner lid down. Guess I'm just lazy, or maybe one of those previously mentioned old guys. I dunno...

I don't want to get too far off topic, but I'd be remiss if I didn't say that I liked PeteK's last avatar better...

Honestly a port mathced cleaned up RPM air gap would have made the same peak power figure and added 20 ft/lbs to the peak torque numbers and a ton of area under the curve....I wish Wes could have fit that intake but unfortunately he had to go with a lower profile manifold. Would have been cool to test both....probably one of my only regrets from the testing.

Tony, I'm starting to regret not testing a RPM Air Gap, or an Airstrike, too, because those intakes would have fit my Chevelle and truck. It would have probably taken less than 30 mins to swap one out on the dyno... if I would have known how easy it was to work on the dyno, I would have tried to make it happen.

BTW, just razzin you about the fish's hole... it comes from a Chinese proverb.

Anyway, it was just one of the many things I picked it up travelling 4K miles, trapped in a mini-van full of Chinese-Indonesians, and I was dying to use it...

I'm a member of:

Chevy Talk

CG - I bought a TPI set-up from one of the regulars here a few years ago. I check in from time to time, just to keep track of him... in case I ever get around to installing it on something and I need to ask him a question.

CF - been sent on a mini vacation for my avatar pic. It just so happens CF used it on their home page for a while... but that didn't prevent them from giving me some time off for using it too. Aside from that, another vacation, and a few deleted posts and locked threads.

I look at CF as a way to kill some time, and occasionally have a little fun, kinda like a smoking hot, psycho nympho ex-girlfriend. You know shouldn't, but you just can't help yourself.

Team Chevelle - their performance forum is the best source for Gen 1 SBC and BBC engine info on the web, bar none.

Chevy Talk - stop by from time to time to visit their 67-72 Truck Forum

Trying to get the wife to register. She says she doesn't want to be attacked or made fun of. I told her that kind of crap goes on at CFOT, not here.

She was like, "Oh really?", and said something about a engine dyno prediction thread...
