Is it possible for a non engine guy to id the difference between a flat tappet cam and a roller cam?

If it were me, and I didn't know, I wouldn't take a chance. I ran Castrol Syntec synthetic in my '85 (early L98, flat tappet cam) along with Lucas ZDDP additive. You could do that, or run one of the other oils. I didn't care for the Rotella because of the high viscosity/high oil pressure, but that's just me. The only reason they removed the ZDDP was because of damage to the Catalytic converters, and you don't have that problem in a early C3. The ZDDP won't hurt anything if you do have a roller cam, so what do you have to lose, other than a few extra bucks each oil change? That's pretty cheap insurance, if you ask me.

Good luck with whatever way you go!

Rick......welcome to the board.

Whatever you do, make sure you know how old that engine is. If you think it is an LT-1, it would likely (but not positively) be an early '70s vintage 350, which would still have a "flat tappet" cam. If that is the case, pay close attention to Trae's advice regarding oil containing ZDDP (don't ask me how I know.....it's not a pretty , or cheap lesson to learn!).

I guess it's possible the engine has been changed to a later '90s LT-1, in which case it would be a roller cam motor, and in that case I'd run synthetic, of your choice.

There are folks that will tell you that after a flat tappet engine is "broken in" that any oil will work fine. That was true several years ago, but the EPA has forced the oil companies to change formulas, and now there is not enough Zinc or Phosphorus in most off the shelf motor oils to provide the "high pressure" lube (ZDDP) needed in a flat tappet engine. Amsoil makes some that do, Brad Penn does, and Joe Gibbs does, and there are others, but I would research that very deeply, if I were you.

Of course, this is just my opinion, but it came from a costly education.

Can't wait to see more pics of that C3!

I agree with Bogus......something is wrong with that. They obviously "babied" the car to run that. Having just driven one yesterday, and having driven some pretty quick cars in my years as a motorhead to compare it to, I can tell you the ZR1 is quicker than that. In fact, it was about the most impressive thing I've driven, ever!

Good morning, Gurus. I hope everyone had as good a day yesterday as I did!
First of all, and this part is kinda bittersweet, I sold the '85 yesterday AM, but it was to a guy who, along with his father, has a '62 that the father bought in '64, and they want to "finish" what I started on the '85 and use it for weekends, etc. That makes me feel much better about selling it.
Next, we attended an open show in our town, and one of our club members won a "Top 20" award(not bad for an "open" show with nearly 300 cars), and then in the big doorprize drawings, my son (Trae1976) won a 350turbo transmission! We're gonna work with Trans shop that donated it and try to "swap" for a 700r to put in his C3.
And then, most exciting for me, I got to drive a ZR1!
:toothy8: I am still giddy with excitement! One of our club members has the car, and he allowed me to drive it, oh about 8 - 10 miles or so........about half on the Interstate.......and guys, everything you've read about this incredible machine is true, and then some. I've driven some pretty fast street machines in my day, but nothing, NOTHING, that I've ever driven comes close to the acceleration of that car once you get about 3k rpm and get the supercharger to take over. Smooth and violent at the same time, if you can get my drift. I'm still smiling and it may never go away!

Everyone have a great day!

Hmmmm.........I was also a 4th grader-rising 5th grader in '65, but here in the south, we all went to public schools. Did a lot of the same things as any 10 year old, with the exception that I got my first golf club that summer. (yep...just one club, a Walter Hagen 5 iron....I still have it, hanging on my office wall) I have played golf ever since....not sure I've gotten much better at it, though. The highlight of '65 for me was the Bristol "NHRA Springnationals", the very 1st NHRA event in Bristol. I had a close, older cousin who had just gotten a job as a sportswriter for the Bristol paper, and he let me "tag along" while he covered the event! Got up close looks at many "later to be legends" (Garlits, Kalitta, Sox & Martin, etc.), and saw the original, AWB "Funny Cars". I'm still hooked on big time drag racing to this day! Later that year, my Vols went 8-1-2, thus launching another of my passions, which also continues on.

I found this article;

http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/dec97/egr.htm

at the end it implies that a bad O2 sensor might cause a code 32...that's one thing I haven't replaced yet, plan to soon, wonder if that might help...can't hurt...

I don't know if that could have had any effect on mine, since I had replaced the O2 sensor just before my issue started. I hope for you that is the case.....probably easier to locate a new one! Good luck......and I am very limited in my knowledge of this, but ask anyway........I might get lucky!

I had similar issues, same code on my '85. Mine was opposite yours..........the light came on right after startup, but once the car was warm, if you turned off the engine and restarted......no light, no code. The FSM said to test it, you clear the code, let the engine cool, and disconnect the EGR Temp Switch.......which I did, and now I got no light or code until it WARMED UP......which said the switch was bad. I would think that same test would work for you in reverse......clear codes, completely cool engine, and disconnect switch. If you get a light and code within about 15 seconds (while the engine is still cool), I'll bet it's the switch. (Mine was reading warm all the time, yours would be reading cool all the time).

Now, for the not so good news. I had a devil of a time finding a new switch.......it is no longer in production either by AC or the aftermarket. A good buddy of mine, who owns an AC-Delco Auto Repair business finally located ONE.....they told him it was the last one in the entire network. I got it, replaced it, no more problem.

Hope this helps.....maybe a little.

Well, there's a lot of work involved.......cleaning and then "etching" the floor before you start coating, and then the coating is done in three steps.

As for cost, I think his garage is comparable, size wise, to what you describe, and I think his cost somewhere around $500. Here's a link to their website: U Coat It

I guess Trae hasn't seen this, but if he does maybe he'll post a pic.

Hmmm....well, since I now have both, I suppose I had better join in this thread. It may surprise you for me to say this, but I agree about some of the positives regarding the C4. Even my L98 seems to have more bottom end, seat of the pants, acceleration. And I think I could drive it deeper into a turn (something I love to do on the local mountain roads), but my C4 is a Z51 car, so that may explain some of that.

Now, the C5 is much more "refined", so to speak. Much, much, much easier to get in and out of (and I ain't gettin' any younger!), rides much better, and (and this is my personal opinion) is a great looking car! Oh, and it don't run too bad, either! I guess I must agree.......the C4 is more of a sports car, the C5 more of a "touring" car..........but the truth is, I love 'em both for what they are, and they are "different" cars, while still being Corvettes!

Thanks for the kind words, Matt..........but I've got a feeling that it may have been different if you had not shown up late! Between you, and TeeBee, who really warmed up and got quicker, I would have probably been a distant 3rd!

Nice weather here for this weekend.......and an "All Corvette" show tomorrow by a local club, so we've got plenty to do.....but on top of that, today is pretty big for my wife and myself. After looking, testing, and being patient for over a year, I'm going later today to pick up the C5 we bought! Nice, low mileage, local garage kept '98. I'll post some pics once it's home.

Now, to try to figure out where to put another car! I'm fresh out of garage!

Have a great day, everyone!
