I've decided to do a brake job on my 96 C4 with 53K miles this week. This is the first time I've done a brake job in quite awhile. I bought OEM pads for the job. One question... Can the brake rotors on a C4 front and rear be turned/refinished? It looks like my front left rotor definitely needs to be turned or replaced. I can see a slight gouge on the inside of the rotor surface. This is the first brake job this C4 has ever had. Any suggestions/tips to go along with this task would be appreciated.

Yes, rotors can be refinished in they meet the min. thickness when done. Replacement rotors are not that costly.
Here are the 92 specs, should be similar. Std rotors: thickness - 20.2mm, 18.9 mm after refinish, 18.4mm-discard. Thickness variation - 0.013mm, runout - 0.15mm HD rotors: thickness - 28.8mm, 26.9mm, 26.5mm Same runout as above. If it was me I'd take the OEM pads back and get a set of Hawk HPS pads, big difference in performance. I'd also change the fluid, flush the system. |

The stock pads are clean, but they don't stop for a hill of beans.

Another vote for the Hawk pads - follow their bedding instructions (real easy). I'd also install some speed bleeders, makes the job easy - Earl's Solo Bleed looks like an improvement over the original Speed Bleeders.

8 bucks each to get rotors turned at Pep Boys.
Turn them if the rotors are grooved. A gouge isn't a big deal unless it resulted in metal sticking above the rotor surface. |

NAPA sells OEM rotors, made in USA or Canada. I worry about Chinese castings... cheap, yes, quality, so-so.
I would also do the Hawk pads. They rock. |

The hawk pads were worth the money and are every bit as good as everyone here has stated. The best bang for rotors is corvette reclycling. They are original OEM's in the delco boxes for 20.ea.

I will be doing the C5 conversion on my 85 soon and was wondering if the set with 13in front rotors would work with the C5 calipers? Anyone know?

You don't need C5 rotors, and getting the calipers and adapters costs money and time.
And again, I don't know where this secret Napa store is, around here C5 rotors cost about $45 each plus tax. |

So the Wilwood kit can use standard C4 rotors?

Dunno. I have a C5 Wilwood kit and the offset and diameter are both different from stock C5 brakes.
They could've easily designed it the same, but then I guess Wilwood couldn't sell as many rotors. I had my stock rear brakes turned at Pep Girls. |

threadnapper I wasn't pushing the c5 upgrade on the OP. But since you mentioned it, it's the best upgrade I've done on my car. And for the $300 I spent on it, it was well worth it. Matthew |
