Who has LT headers? L98 with or w/o AIR.

I have pretty much decided on doing LT headers even though I said I would leave everything stock....Oh well. More than likely I plan on getting Hedman elites. I am debating whether to keep or get rid of the AIR system. It doesn't seem like there is a real benefit to keeping it. I don't have to pass emissions. The headers w/o AIR are cheaper, but I have to buy the eliminator kit, so it's a wash. I am unsure then if I'm going to run a hi-flow cat or what.

Anyone care to chime in with their opinions? What do you have on your set up and any pics? Unlike most guys, I don't want my car to be loud. My wife doesn't care for it super loud, and I'm not a fan of drone at cruising speed.

Ideas are appreciated.

Matthew

1989 coupe, all stock.

Headers I'm looking at:

Looks good - who did the lt1 work? Did you purchase it modified already? How long did it take you to swap it out? What kind of performance difference have you noticed?

Looks good

We don't need to do testing anymore in IL on cars older than 1996 - all they want to do is plug in the OBDII and go. Lazy. It's ok. MI used to have emissions testing, but they found out it was a waste of money and didn't do anything so they got rid of it.

I am debating whether I'm going to remove all of my AIR stuff because I want to add LT headers to the 89. Headers cost less w/o the AIR hookup stuff, but then I have to get the eliminator kit so it's about the same. I think I'd like to remove the AIR to clean up the bay, though.

Of course I take the top off. That's the purpose. Only takes a minute, and then it's top off fun. No need to saw off the end of the ratchet, just buy a t45 star bit. Some guys have used a little black and decker electric hand screwdriver along with that. I've never seen a design change to have a handle instead of the bolts.

I never liked the plasma picture quality.

Actually it's neither. It's a DLP - rear projection. It's not totally flat like the plasma or LCD. I don't need to hang it on the wall, so that's a big deal right there. Huge cost savings, to me. I don't care for plasmas due to the possibility of screen burn in and the fact that my living room is very bright during the day (supposedly not good for viewing plasmas). I don't know much about LCDs, so I can't say. What I know is that my tv was much cheaper for a bigger screen vs a plasma or LCD, and it's rated at 1080p, the highest resolution possible. The quality of the tv is awesome. So all of those factors went into my decision.

There has been talk about this topic for some time now. Several people have indicated that they were going to try to reproduce the flares themselves, but as far as I know at this point no one has come through. I believe it is too cost prohibitive to set up the tooling from scratch.

Since it's in the kitchen, is the oulet a GFCI? Has it been tripped? Just a thought. That or maybe the switch itself is bad. Try swapping it out if what "Livin" said doesn't work.

Woah, Brian. I can agree, and yet disagree. But I will correct myself on the smoking marijuana and being truant. It lead me down the troubled road of drugs, the motorcycle lifestyle, and loose morals that ends in prison with lifelong regrets. So take some advice from a person who lead that hardcore lifestyle. I'm proud of your statement (regarding non-drug usage and education), good for you. But I am not putting myself on a pedestal and don't intend to. It isn't worth it. I have been to several other forums and they will insult you, however they can be helpful if you try to relate to them. Mispelling and run on? I am the king of that. Proud? No. I am a little grateful, though, that I've made it this far. I don't know how I came to type the way I do. I slander the English language and swear quite a bit. I am personally dealing with a troublesome 16 year old daughter who would like to be like her father. I tell her that I will be forced to inflict parental corporal punishment upon her if she does. Good, huh? Ok, I'll refrain from delving deeper into that subject at this point.
I have a sense of humor. I like to joke and talk as I learn. After all, there are some good, knowledgeable people on this forum. By the way, where is my "redneck" interpreter drop top? (Matatk!)

P.S. I had never seen a keyboard until I needed a personal computer for my children. It is my rational belief that the qwerty keyboard should be in the same order as the ABCs. With a pen, I do quite well. With a keyboard, not so much. Despite the above, it is Friday and spring is near, so everyone be happy. Yeah! Sorry Bogus, but I did previously attest to the fact that I run on as I type. Life is good, so enjoy it.

There's a lot of work that goes into swapping a L98 and a LT1 or later. If my motor goes, I'll be pulling it and stroking it to a 383. That along with headers, ported heads, gears, new torque converter, and a couple other little things will make a sweet little street car with tons of torque and usable power.

Just my opinion. But opinions are like assholes - everyone's got one and they usually stink.

I've pushed the vette by myself with no problems. Since I was alone, I opened the door and pushed on the lower part of the A-pillar. Once it gets rolling not too much effort. Vette is light compared to some other cars I've pushed in the past...

Anyone know if the temps will cook the paint, though?

I used the spray on caliper paint from the parts store. Even with good prep it was crappy. You need to use a high temp primer before you put it on to get good adhesion. I painted mine black (on black car) and I think that would look good with your color. Just a thought.

I do.

I've always had American cars because my dad works for the UAW in the American car industry. After I bought my brand new 2003 Monte Carlo, I said I would never buy another one. That thing was the biggest piece of crap, and I put a lot of money into it at 65,000 miles. I maintain my vehicles well, so that wasn't the issue.

I now have a 2006 Nissan Xterra. Wife has a 2008 Nissan Rogue. Before that she had a 2000 Toyota Solara. Father in law has a Nissan Altima, mother in law has a Honda Civic, brother has an Infiniti G35. He also has a Ford F-150 for work, though. Only American I will buy again is another vette. Just personal preference. Of course everyone has their own opinion, that's mine.

And the in-laws have it, so I might just try one of their boxes to see if I like it. Then I'll make my choice.

I dunno. That engine is pretty dirty. I probably wouldn't give him more than 2, maybe 300 bucks for it

Matthew

ps - that reminds me of a viper that I dealt with a couple years back. The kid driving it slid off the off ramp and put the bumper into a light pole. Barely dinged the bumper, damage didn't seem that bad. Total repair bill, $15,000. Ouch.

Yeah, the title says it all. Got my new 50" Samsung DLP LED TV yesterday afternoon. All I have to say is sah-weet. This thing is awesome. I went from my 25" regular old plain jane to this thing. Tuned it a little yesterday with one of my THX dvds and it's amazing. I just have regular cable hooked up now, but after seeing the difference in the quality of the "HD" channels vs the regular cable channels I think I might need to get dish network or something. Anyone have that? The tv is capable of 1080p (of course, not available with cable) and regular cable is like 480i, I think? Suggestions?

Matthew

Quick picture - not best quality, but here it is:

What is the cost for the internet usage fees? Is it unlimited? I remember that guy in canada who got a huge bill for using his phone card with his laptop - but I don't think he had his plan set up properly. Might be a good idea to double check just in case. Otherwise cool beans

I didn't watch all of them, but pretty impressive. A 10.87 was the time on one of those runs. Wow.

What was the total procedure that you took when prepping your floor for the epoxy. As I understand, prep is everything to end up with a durable floor with the epoxy.

Well, I don't remember the exact steps, but from memory:
First cleared out all of the garage. Used a broom and a leaf blower to blow out all of the dust and crap. I had some old paint and other gunk on the concrete that I used a razor scraper to clean off because it was raised. I then wet the areas that needed extra cleaning from old stains (oil) and used acid wash and a stiff bristled brush. After that was done, you work in sections by wetting the floor and then applying the "etch" that is included in the kit that you mix up in a bucket. Use the brush (I had it on a long handle) to work it into the concrete. After it sits for a few minutes, use the hose to wash it all out. Let it dry and wash it again. I didn't want any extra acid etch to be left on before I painted. Make sure the garage floor is totally dry before painting. Then paint in sections and sprinkle the anti-slip chips over the top. This is a must, because otherwise when the floor is wet it's slippery.

I think it took all day now that I think about it. But I'm happy with the results. My neighbor called a company to do his and they wanted to come bead blast the floor first with a big machine and then paint with industrial grade epoxy or paint - they wanted like over $2,000. I think he ended up doing it himself.

Like you said, prep is the most important step. Hope it turns out well for you.

It's a GM donation. I'm from the Detroit area originally. Every year GM stickers up a bunch of fancy cars for the Woodward Dream Cruise. I think that one they donated for good, though.

Lift looks great. I'm coming to your house to change my oil. Don't be surprised if I knock on the door soon.

Thanks. Original owner (house is about 6 yrs old) had it built that way. I thought it was pretty neat, too. There is a cut in on both sides of the door. One side is tools, the other side is junk like pool supplies, extra parts, snowblower, etc.

Fish farts = methane = potential future fuel source

Coating is a basic kit we bought at Menard's (like Home Depot) - it's the Rustoleum Epoxy Shield Garage Floor Coating Kit. Took two kits to do the floor. I bought some extra acid wash to do the floor because the garage was 5 years old and had a lot of oil and stuff already on the conrete from the previous owner.

Floor is durable as far as spilling solvents and whatnot on it. Oil just sits on the top of the surface forever. I leaked a bunch of brake fluid on it from my brother's truck I was fixing and once soaked up with a rag it was discolored for a day then back to normal. It will scratch off from sharp objects, so when I use jack stands I put cardboard under them. In-laws did the same floor before us. Theirs started scraping off a little because they didn't prep it right and scratch it up with junk, so they just put another coat right over it and that worked well.

Overall I'm happy - took a full day, but much easier to clean and looks nicer.

If you're sure it's from the drain plug make sure it's not cross threaded. Otherwise like others said, oil can drip down from several places.

Shift work....

Never did it myself, really. But my wife worked nights at Wal-Mart for a few months. I was in college, and we had a young daughter at the time.

I've worked mids for the past couple years. I don't mind them at all, kind of like it. I grew up watching my dad work mids for 20 years, so to me it's "normal". I've been on days filling in for a guy who was hurt, so now it's back to mids. Wife hates it, but oh well.

And the oven is beeping, which means it's time to go. (Did you think I was kidding?) Hot banana bread. Nice.

Have fun, talk to you when I return from the dark side (midnights, that is...)
