He promised to send me pictures of it when it was completed. If I ever get them I will share them with you guys.

I really enjoyed the car for the short time I had it. c4's are still great cars!

Thanks for all the help and encouragement. If he wouldn't have stumbled upon the car I would still have it and bugging you guys about how to get it back together.

Guys,

I had someone offer to buy the car for very close to what I had in it. The buyer is going to fix it and he works at a body shop so they will take their time and restore it to its former glory.

If I was not in the process of buying my first house and had a place to work on it where I would not be rushed it would have been a different story.

I sold him the bumper cover and subframe along with the two new quarter panels I went to pick up in Daytona Florida.

It was sad to see it go but I am glad it will be taken care of and also relieved I don't have to take the time to learn how to fix it.

I kept the GS wheels the front wheels have brand new Kumho xs tires on them and the back wheels still have the slicks on them. I would like to sell them so before I put up an ad on corvetteforum I thought you guys might like to have them.

PM me with an offer. You guys know what they are worth. $400 worth of tires up front with less than 10 miles on them. The rear slicks have a track day left in them.

Anybody have link or any idea where I can get instructions on how to cut and rehang the rear quarter pannels?

The body shop wants an arm and a leg to do it and understandaly so, it appears it is going to be quite a job. I am going to take the car home and make my garage into a body shop for the time being and use this opportunity to learn how to fix this car.

I have already got the rear bumper, aluminum subframe and all the lights/reflectors. So far I have only spent $320.

I am going do Daytona this weekend to watch the 500 and pick up left and right quarter panels that are still attached to each other. That will be another $300 in parts and I will have everything I need to fix the rearend.

Thanks for the help!

Finally got the green light. The frame is safe and I'm leaving in the morning for South Carolina to pick up a rear bumper assembly.

Wish me luck!

It is almost impossible to see the damage from this photo I have circled the damaged areas.

Top passenger side is chipped where the hood was pushed into the door.

Drivers side is chipped where it was pushed into the door.

It is not aligned to the lower quarter panel and if I remember correctly there is a small crack somewhere up there.

Nothing I can't drive the car with. Just something that I will have to have fixed. Hopefully the hood is repairable.

While on the subject what do you guys think of the black decal on the hood. It was put on by the previous owner and I cant decide if I like it. It's not too bad but when you are standing right beside the car you can see its a sticker and I think that is tacky personally.

could I see some photos of the front bumper skin? I need one and if yours isn't bad but bad enough that you don't want to keep it, I might buy it from you.

I have lots of parts. I have the front bumper impact foam, I think I sold the structure though. If you start assembling a list of stuff I might have some freebies for ya. Sadly no body panels, though, and that's what you need most.

Those two pictures up top are the only ones I have.

Still waiting on the body shop to let me know about the frame condition...

Since I have been waiting, I was able to source most of the parts I need to repair. Thanks to Will and his contact just a few hours north of me in Virginia I have everything I need for the rear for under $600!

The front is just cracked in a few small places and for now I plan on repairing it the best I can. The hood is going to be the expensive piece. I decided if the stock one can't be repaired I am going to splurge on a lightweight racing hood. I found what looks to be a very nice one that only weighs 22lbs.

Is Performance AFX a vendor here? I don't want to post the hood information if they are not.

Keep your fingers crossed, I talked to the body shop and I will know today if I fix it or part it.

I think the SMC body repair of that quarter pannel will be the biggest/hardest part to fix.

Personally I'd find someone parting a C4 out and get them to cut a "repair pannel" off and have the body shop graft it on yours.... SMC cuts really clean with a saber or jig saw using fine tooth blade.

The rear "frame" has an alum subframe/bumper support in that area that just bolts on... That might be the "cage" they are talking about... if that is what's bent, just unbolt it and install another one for someone parting a C4 out.

I have a friend right down the road from me in Sterling, VA that parts out C4's... He has 3 of them for parts right now... He is priced fair and is good guy to deal with. If you need used parts, I'll be happy to give you his contact info.

OK so a quick update. I called the body shop to have them confirm the frame was bent and he said they have not put it on the jig yet. So they know the "cage" in the back is bent a little but they said for a couple of hundred bucks they can bend that back out.

I know these guys pretty well and he said if I can find used parts then I could get this thing fixed up fairly easily.

So I hit the internet and already bought a rear-end assembly with lights for $300. The fiberclass cover is over $1,000 from GM so it looks like I might be able to save this car. I just don't want to have 15k tied up in a 9k car. Looks like I'm in it for the long haul now.

Maybe I will start a thread about this project. Thanks for the help!

Yea it is very unfortunate.

I wish I had the time or the space to fix it because it is such a good car and I really like it.

I obviously agree about insurance. I ALWAYS have full coverage on all my cars but I bought this one to fix up a few things. I put new wheel bearing (SKF HUBS) all the way around it. It came with the competition tires and I ordered new tires for the gs wheels. The front two came in and the black should be here next week. I got the new tires put on up front Saturday morning. And I got caught out in the rain Sunday afternoon. Because of the tires I don't drive the car in the rain ever! I was just trying to make it home.

Back to the insurance, since I have another car I didn't plan on driving the car much this winter and planned for it to basically sit in my garage. I was going to get full coverage for it when I started driving but didn' make it that far...

I was hoping for $4-5K out of it since it is in such good shape but I was afraid $3k was where I was going to end up. I could fix it and keep it, but I would have wayyy too much tied up in it. I think the car is twisted up and the body shop just gave me a quote of $10k for repairs. That is new body parts from GM then prepped and painted. Buying used bumpers and stuff could fix it up but just too much of project for me. Hopeflly I will find someone who has the time to spend on it in order to bring it back to the car it was.

RIP little red corvette!

Hey guys,

The new guy already got himself in a bad spot. With less than 3k miles behind the wheel of my fist c4 vette, I had an accident yesterday.

I was traveling about 50 mph in 6th gear actually being very careful in the rain since I am running competition tires on the car. The car hydroplaned just slightly, enough for the traction control to kick in and that was all she wrote.

Thankfully nobody was around so it was only me involved in the accident. It breaks my heart because this car was so nice. It has just hit 100k miles but was tight as a new car and everything worked flawlessly. In the short time I owned, it I really loved it.

Anyways, I only have liability insurance on the car so I am going to sell it for parts or for a project if someone wants to fix it up.

However, I have no clue what it is worth. The drive-line and suspension are all 100% it is only cosmetic damage. I just had the new seats put in the car and everything!

Whats it worth?

Yeah....what Bill said....can you post some pics of the damage? That may help determine the extent of what you are dealing with. How old is this trailer and how long has it been sitting? Usually when they get turned into garages they have enough problems that the cost to fix is not going to be worth it.....

I could get my old one road worthy again but would put enough into it that I could find another good used one for about as much I'm thinking.....

Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures but there are several people wanting to buy it and I made the offer of getting everything out of it for him (because he is in a wheel chair now) if he would sell it to me.

Looks like I am going to take the gamble and hope I come out on top. Otherwise, I will just salvage what I can and sell it for parts. I"m sure I can get rid of most of it for what I will have invested if it comes to that.

Yea I know it is hard for you to give much help from what I have told you but I appreciate the knowledge.

I would be happy having only $2500 tied up in this trailer by the time its all over with. That gives me in the neighborhood of $2000 for repairs.

I did forget to mention the rot damage is exterior not interior. There are no roof leaks, it is being used as storage currently and there is a ton of stuff in there and it is dry and not musty.

It appears the damage is from it sitting in water. I should have been more specific I am concerned about the exterior damage. You can see from the outside where the wall is separating from the rot and it can't support the weight of the side door to open. It pulls the exterior wall out when you open the door.

The back gate is the same way at the bottom. All the water damage is along the bottom where the wall meets the floor on the exterior.

Thanks for the tips. I'm supposed to be going saturday to pay for it and pick it up.

I think with some plywood from the hardware store, my table saw, some screws and a little bit of diamond plating, I can get this thing back in good shape.

Guys,

I am trying to buy an enclosed car hauler for my C4 and for my Harley's.

I have a good friend who owns a 25' Haulmark that he used to haul his drag car around in.

It has a nice floor in it and it is a V-nose trailer which I really like. The problem is that it has some flood damage.

The wall has rotted out near the front passengers side where there is a side door.

The back ramp also has some rot on it where the water has caused some real damage.

He fully disclosed all of this to me and is selling it as a flood damaged trailer. I feel like he is offering it at a very good price (well below $1,000) so part of me is scared to go ahead and purchase as it has potential to turn into more of a headache than I need.

Any advice on how hard/expensive water damage is to repair on these trailers? A job for professinals only or something I could do over the course of a couple of weekends?

Thanks!

Nice H1, too! Always preferred the look of the H1, but I've driven the H2 and it is very comfortable. Typical GM build quality, though.

Matthew

Ha ha Talk about build quality. That is the downfall of the H1. They took a military truck and screwed interior pieces on with self taping screws right into the doors. Every couple thousand miles, you have to go around and tighten everything up. The bolts holding the brake rotors to the differential are also known for backing out and jaming in the brake caliper.

To Am generals defense, these trucks were never meant to be driven daily with a full interior.

I will double check but I don't think it is a z07. Even if it was, the previous owner replaced the shocks and tossed all the fx3 stuff. I need to look into the suspension more when it warms up this spring.

Who do you run with SCCA? NCCC?

Get a rule book and study it before you do anything else.

For instance, the bigger wheels already put you into SCCA Street Prepared.

Yea I think the upgraded sway bar also bumps me into a different class. Possibly still the street prepared. I have not autox'ed in two years so I have already forgotten all the rules and classes. I will be sure to get the rule book.

I'm sure you have tons of secrets, advice, and suggestions from autox with the c4 and I would love to hear more about your experiences.

C6 was a 2008 Z51. I sold it and bought a Hummer H1. I have always loved the H1's and I got a rare 2 Door. 1 of 15 white 2 door trucks then I created a 2 tone paint scheme modeled after the 2007 H1 (they only made a few and AMG executives were the only ones to have them).

Welcome back, again!

How do you intend on using the car?

Street, autocross, track events?

A change of pads and some brake ducts may be all that you need.

Got to watch changes though if you're doing things like autocrossing.

I want to track it but realistically, I will probably spend most of my time autox because it is close and convenient. The closest track to me is Carolina Motorsports Park about 3 hours away. I hope to get down there for some driving days.

The previous owner Autox this car. He felt the need for slicks which I am replacing with Kumho xs in the next couple of days. Also you can notice they were Z-r1 wheels (the first pic shows the wrong offset) and I switched out the rears for the GS wheels to bring he tires in.

He "upgraded" the suspension and disconnected/removed the fx3 shock system. I'm not sure how he got around the warning light, but I'm assuming he pulled a fuse. It rides worse than my Hummer H1. It appears he replaced them with billstiens. He also put a larger sway bar on so even though it rides like a dump truck it handles pretty good as long as the road is nice and smooth.

It has an aftermarket shift knob but unfortunately no short throw kit...

Everything else seems to be in good shape. It needed a good cleaning oh and I forgot some new U-joints. Every day is progress.

I bought it for a fun ride to autox and to make into somewhat of a track car if I can find the time to get to some track days. I always wanted to track my C6 but I was in college and never got around to it.

Welcome, very nice ride.

It is clamed that C5 brakes work better than C4 brakes because of the C5's increased pad area. IMHO it is because the C5 calipers have a larger piston diameter of
1.62" compared to the C4's 1.5". C5 calipers = a change in the front hydraulic ratio that provides more pad pressure for a given pedal pressure. You can acheive similar results using an eariler year master cylinder with a smaller bore size. Your master cyl = 15/16". 88-91 master cylinder 7/8". While the master cylinder is off the vehicle suggest a DRM brake bias spring be installed it will improve rear brake performance.

If you require statistical data on the hydraulic ratio changes I'll pull it off my shop computer.

No statistical data required on my end. Good advise. The previous owner already tracked the car and has very good brake pads on there. They are amazingly noisy and they will coat my wheels with brake dust extremely quickly. The car does stop well, but I have not been able to track it yet. I will be putting the slotted rotors on for sure because the rotors need to be replaced badly.

I'm back!

I was confused as to why I could not log on!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am located in Asheville, NC and the car is a 6 spd.

I have always loved the black halo's and I never got around to doing it on the C6 but I am glad I did it to this car. I took the seats out this weekend because they needed recovering. They were really the only defect on the car when I bought it.

Somebody suggested I upgrade the brakes and that is next on my to do list. I looked in to the c5 brake upgrade but I'm not sure if they fit with the 17" gs wheels. If they don't fit, what do you guys recommend? I know almost everybody has A-molds but I think they fit these cars perfect and I want to keep these rims.

I appreciate the help and thanks again for the welcome.
