Hi TimAT,
I thought about that as well. I'm going to go by the shop this morning and talk to the mechanic that worked on the car last month and have him give me a step by step procedure on what he did to the transmission. I thought about pulling the pan to check the o-ring myself. Problem is that I just managed to stop the pan from driping fluid and didnt want to touch it again.
On the other hand I might as well have the transmission gone thru so that way I'll feel better when I try to make a visit up to KC or Columbia.
This next outfit that I take the car to has a hell of a reputation, plus he'll have a warranty on the tranny as well.
GG.

One ore bit of information about the transmission.
The way the mechanic explaned is that the front pump seal has one bad. So the whining is being caused by the fluid draining by the pump seal into the pan. Now when the car is cold and started up the pump is starving for fluid and theres air in the pump which is causing the whine noise. Once the pump has primed back up it stops whining.
I take it real easy while the car is still cold. Infact I let the car warm up real good before putting it in gear. Even when the car is good and hot the transmission does not slip or falter in anyway that I can tell.
So why has the pump seal all of a sudden gone bad. Is this common in the 400 trans?
Again can I drive the car like this or not.
Thanks again fof any advice.

Took the 70 vert into a mechanic to have a tune up & a general check up before I went to Eureaka Springs weekend. Before I took the car to the shop it sounded fine with no whining. Now when I start the car it whines till the trans gets good and warmed up.
The question is, What could this mechanic have done to the car to cause this whining and a FYI I had changed the transmission fluid and filter and installed a new pickup tube o-ring before it went to the shop and drove it around for a few days before sending the car to the shop.
Now the mechanic said the problem is the trans pump seal and I'll have to pull the transmission to fix the problem.
Does this sound correct?
Also keep in mind that the trans seem to hit hard going from first to second but seems ok from second to third.
So I asked the mechanic to see what he thought and that this trans might have a shift kit in it as well.
Question, Does this sound like I need to have this trans checked immediately, or is this something that will not hurt the trans and can be run for a while, say for a short 50 to 70 mile cruises from time to time.
I'm getting ready to call an outfit tomorrow to have them check the trans but wanted to ask the question here first to see what some of you thought about the problem.
I want the car to run right and not have to worry about the tranny but then also was wanting not to have to dump a load of cash into the trans right now.
Thanks for any info.

Winter plans,
Starting tomorrow, I'm going to call a outfit in springfield to have them look at my 400 auto trans. A month ago I took my vert into a local shop in nixa to get a tune up & a general going thur before I went to Eureaka Springs. Now sence I took it to the shop it now wines when I start it up. The guy that worked on it told me it was wineing when I brought it in and it's the transmission pump seal and will have to pull it to repair.
All I can say now is where did I lay my 357 at.
Anyway I'll start a thread over in tech to see what you guys think before I take it to a known expert for repair.

Still working on my coupe. Having to back up and change a few things then continue. Currently finishing up the coolant system. You know, radiator, hoses and the dreaded heater core.
GG.

Hey andrew,
I paid right at 100.00 per night at the 1876 hotel just up from the car show area. It's not the greatest place in E.S but it was clean as in not dirty and had a double bed, AC & cable. Didnt spend much time in there but I like the location which is directly across from the conaco station where they fuel up the cars for the econo run and the front parking lot is butted up next to 62 hwy. Great veiw of all the cars crusing by. I managed to get one of 4 rooms left sometime in august I think it was when I reserved my room.
I cant tell you may names of the other hotels there but you might contact the chamber of commerce in E.S and they might beable to send you info or lead you to a web site with a map of the hotels and a list. Thing is I noticed that a lot of hotels main office are up on the main road but expand to a huge complex further back behind some of the offices and have a lot of rooms but dont know the names of the hotel.
Bare with me but I trying to still load pics from the weekend but I'm at work and to many eyes wondering.
Greg

Andrew,
Truly sorry that I missed you. Infact I wasnt going to do the car show. I got up early and was going to the car wash to rinse off the car and when I drove by the show I said what the heck. After the crew spoted us, I was glad that I did attend the show. I knew I was not going to win any thing but for the experence of being able to talk to and meet a lot of people was priceless. When I went and walked around to do my part of the judging I got a lot of great Ideas for my car and also saw a few things not to do to my car.
Your are very correct. If anyone wants to see a huge amount of corvettes then go next year. It will be the 20th annual event and I'm sure that more people will attend. I went ahead and booked my room for next year.
Heres the bad thing about going to ES. I'm now wanting to look at a C6, black, but cant make up my mind whether to go with a vert or coupe. Also need to figure out how to make more room in my garage to fit it. LOL
I"m heading out of town today and will try to get a few pictures of the weekend entered here once I get settle in.
Greg.

Andrew,
If you or your wife has never been to ES it will be worth it just to drive the roads and it should be a great day for a drive as well.
I'll be at the 1876 hotel. It's on the north side on the main drag just west of area where the vette show will be held. I think the show parking lot area is called pine mountian or pine hill or something like that. Theres a conaco station acorss the street on the south side of the road.
My convertible is light blue 1970 with old applaince wheels and spinners center caps and a black top with black interior.
I'll be the big ugly guy standing next to it. LOL
That picture taking sounds good.
I tried to install a pic in the avatar section this morning but didnt take.
I will try to install a pic just in the thread thru photobucket.
Any tips would be helpfull.

Hi Curtis,
I read where it looks like you guys have some shows at the BPS and or is the Hooters show still having any shows for this next month. It may be possible that I could make a drive up there for a cruise in. This trip from springfield to eureka springs will be the longest I've taken in the vert and hope the car makes it to ES ok. I had a mechanic go thru it last week and give it a tune up and feel confident it will make the trip. So if it does ok on this trip then I might look into doing a trip up to your neck of the wood then shoot over to KC. This of course is based on my work schedule.
Greg.

Hi Curtis & Andrew,
I'll take all kinds of pictures and try to post here. I've never posted any pics here but do have a account with photobucket. Would like to post a pic of my vert so any one going by my hotel and see's the car would be welcome to stop and chat for a while.
No andrew i dont know the wright family but do have some friends in kimberling city area and I have a little place past lampe mo.
I'm going to chicken out and wait for this severe storm front to pass thru tonight and tomorow then go down. I was thinking of trying to run the auto cross for fun. Never done one let alone seen one either.

I liked it so much as far as the instalation I bought a second for my convertible last month when dewitt had his sale going on.
When dewitt said direct fit, I means it was a direct fit.
I did not have to alter anything to install and to me that was worth every penny.
I'll be lucky to get it in the vert before june, but in the mean time I can stare at it in my garage. LOL.

Alright here we go,
On the coupe I finished installing the front suspension and the new dewitt radiator, plus need to finish detailing the engine bay. Going to remove the AC evaporator & housing and the heater core and clean up everything then install the new heater core. While I have the evaporator out I'll remove the exhaust manifolds and change all the plug wires then clean up and re install the exhaust manifolds at that point I'll have had my mind made up and decide on whether to get the loud or quite side exhaust (69) style then install them.
Sometime after that I'll rebuild the steering assy.
Once this is finished I'll move to the ass end and start in there.
Now the convertible.
Let's put it this way, she needs a lot of work to.

Nice Vette Barry. Is that the silver or grey, or is that the oyster interior. It goes very well with the red.

Thanks for all the information guy's.
It looks like everyone is in agreement to take it to get rebuilt.
So what amp rating or out put should I ask to have up graded to. 70, 85 or a hundred be ok?
Thanks, Again.

I have a 70 convertible with a 350 and a few mod's.
A aftermarket AC was installed in the car before I bought it. I was running the car in the driveway the other day and could hear a squeek in coming from the alternator. It did not sound like belt noise either. I've talked to a couple of people and they felt the noise could be a bearing in the alternator.
Ok while I was running the car I noticed when I would turn on the AC the volt gauge on the dash would pull down more then I felt was normal. I did this a couple of times to confirm what looked like a large draw on the system. BTW the blower switch only works on the high poition.
I'm not positive what size the alternator is on the car at this time due to being away from the car but pretty sure it's not original.
What type alternator should I get for the car. I would like to get one that will wire up like the old alt, and what size should I get whether 63-70-85 amp or larger.
What if any are advantages or disadvanatges of the larger (more amps) alternator and or would a larger amp alt hurt the old orginal wiring.
I've looked at all the alternators at the summit site and now more confused.
I would consider the alternator thats got a little bling (chrome) to it to.
Thanks for any help.

Is there a way to jack up the SB motor 350 with Auto transmission on either a 70 coupe or 70 vert from under the car (safely) and loosen the motor mounts enough to swap out my plug wires that are between the motor mount and the block, and or could I change out the motor mount also while I'm there, say one side at a time.
Thanks for any info.

It's actually very easy to swap the mounts if they need to be replaced, or to loosen them for plug wire work.

I jack up under the crank balancer though. It's easy to get to and you can usually manipulate the jack from under the car with one arm. The only things to be very careful about are the fan in the shroud and the distributor and the firewall.

The automatic transmission cooling lines can be a problem so be mindful of them when trying to get in, and just remember that extensions and deep wall sockets and wobbles are your best friend. Those, and a few beers.

Thanks for the suggestion's bogus & DB. Say I try lifting under the harmonic balancer. That wont hurt the balancer or crank in any way?
After I get the front steering assy off the car and I'm going to remove the exhaust also, could I remove the oil pan and use a block of wood to protect the bottom of the engine block on one side and jack up from there.
If going under the balancer is the way to go then ok but I dont know enough about the engines but feel that may be tricky.
My fan clutch and fan is already out so I wont have to worry about binding up in the shroud.
Didnt think about the distributor. Glad I asked about all of this.
Thanks again guy's.

Hey Curtis,
Nice video. I'm at work and have some kind of corp filter on the system that filters pic's so I cant see any of your pictures but for some reason I could watch the you tube video. I've liked that stinger hood of yours sense the first time I saw it.
Your wife have a nice single sister? LOL.

I know Willcox personally, have met him for lunch and talked with him many times. He's usually right on and won't try selling your something that he wouldn't put on one of his own Vettes...of which he and his partners and friends have many. Put it this way...while we were talking he's always talking about more cam and more air and more power and more compression. I am sure I have even heard his quiet side pipes and to be honest I think they are just what you are looking for. They are louder than stock exhaust but not outrageous like the loud ones. Just saying, I think the quiet is just a term and they aren't really as quiet as you are imagining.

Howdy DB,
Yes Sir I'm in full agreement with you about Willcox opinion and his judgement as well. We had a long email chat the other day and like I mentioned he pretty much sold me on his explanation of the quiet side pipes. He wasnt throwing me a sales pitch either, which is why I do business with them. My problem is me or my ears. Do I want to hear more or less rumble.
BTW, Willcox told me about the time you made a visit to his store. He told me he had to send some of his staff out to the store to buy a big mop and bucket & take it back to the shop and follow you around and mop up all the drool you were leaving behind when he started showing you his vettes and some of his friends vette. LOL
I bet that was fun.
Thanks for the advice.

Hello guru members.
First time posting a question in this section & would appreciate some feedback on the 69 (original GM)style side pipes for my 1970 coupe with 350 SB, AC,PB,PS, 400 auto.
When I bought my coupe the 69 GM style side pipes have made it all the way down to me from the first owner that had them installed back in 70. I've talked to the original owner many times and he is a corvette owner and in fact still owns and vette restore shop in California. The set of exhaust currently on the car is going on the dumpster. I've decided to restore the side pipe covers and have done so and now looking at the exhaust pipes for the coupe.
I'm at a point (CONFUSED) as to whether I want to have the loud or quite sidepipes. I was looking at Sweet thunders and at Willcox side pipes both the loud and quiet type exhaust.
I talked to Mr. Willcox of Willcox Corvette Parts and he has me sold on the quite style side pipes for the car, but I'm still not satisfied with myself whether to go with the loud(stock) or a quite exhaust. I'm asking myself, if I get the loud will they be overbearing and or if I get the quite exhaust, I'm thinking dam I should of went with the loud set.
What do you all with any style sidepipes like or change if you could or are you happy with what you have.
Thanks for any help.
P.S. This is why I'm going to as many vette shows as soon as possible to be able to hear the side pipes first hand.
Thanks again.

Thank you all very much for the warm welcome. I've recognized a lot of avitars and faces sence I've joined the GURU. Thanks for the heads up about this site Curtis.

I'm going to try my very best to make it up to Columbia Mo for the Hooters car show on the 9th of May.
Didnt realize it was a true Hooters with the Gals car show.
Sorry DB cant make the Lake of the ozark show due to being at work that date but will get home from work on the 7th of may and plan on heading to see the Hooters show.
Right now theres a 60% chance that I will not beable to drive the vette up to the show but driving the old 1990 pickup is still a joy for me anyway.
Please be patient with me while I try to navigate thru this new site and I'm going to figure out how to attach my avitar as well. Can we put up two avitars or just one?
Do we send the pic's thru photobucket then paste to the page for the thread here on the site?

Ok going to the tech section. Have a bunch more questions.
Thanks again guy's for the welcome.
